Yes, The Rode Mic has pretty good quality. I use it for documentary shooting and for the price you cant beet it. Mainly I use the sony uwp mics, there quality is a lot better, but if you are in close quarters, it works well. I took the weird little peice off mine and mounted it to a clip on my Panasonic Hmc 40, but have seen people using it on the Cannon DSlr's.

There is a video on our site that I used the Rode in called March Forth Video spot. Check the link for quality.

with the advent of HDSLR came a bunch of accessories to add shoes. I use one that screws into the tripod mount at the bottom of the camera, that has a hand grip on the left side that has a shoe on top where I can put my light.

so if I order a Rode Videomic w/mount, the mount that comes with it should fit the shoe on top of the cam correct? What do you do if you need a light at the same time?

the videomic fits in the flash shoe. It's not too long; you can't see the nose. The mic is very light, I usually use it on a tripod, I have used it for handheld w/o problem.

How do you mount the mic on the cam guys? Bruce..the standard Rode Videomic doesn't isn't too big for the hv20? I mean in terms of weight it adds to cam, or so long that it gets in the frame on certain shots. Are you shooting handheld on on a tripod?

Hi,

I own a Panasonic HDC TM700 which is the same size of your camera and my local supplier suggest to use a Sennheiser MKE400 cost about $250 it is a small mic and yield a very nice result. Small camera need a small mic too long this can block high zoom and each time I use it the camera detect the presence of some object can block the zoom vision. I use for distance up to 40 feet away the talent most time is about 6 feet. See your local dealer and bring your camera probably you can test it in the store.

Regards,

Hope you guys are up for a little friendly chatter about external mics and how to mount them on the Canon HV30. After reading reviews and listening to tests on youtube for a variety of external mics including the Rode Video Mic, Rode videomic pro, senheisser 400, azden smt55? ect, I think I am going to give the Rode Videomic Pro a try based on size and performance. I liked the sound of the Rode Videomic better on the tests I heard but it just seems to big for such a small cam. I was ready to purchase the Pro when I discovered I would need a mount of some sort. There appear to be a few choices that let you mount the mic essentially on the cam accessory shoe. I've also seen a couple of L-Shaped brackets that mount the mic on the side. I would like to know what you guys are using and how you like your setup. Post some pics if you don't mind. Seems like the L-brackets would make it hard to balance the cam when shooting off the tripod. I like the idea of having the mic over the top of the cam, but most people say it needs to be off the cam to avoid hum and noise. I like to shoot thru the eyepiece instead of the LCD sometimes so I don't want that blocked. I may have to get a couple of different mounts to suit my needs. I will be shooting mostly handheld for my next project with only a little tripod work. Can't wait for the feedback. Check back soon.

I am purchasing a camera for the first time and after hours of research I'm finally down to choosing between the Canon HV 30 and HF100. It seems that either camera would be great in terms of picture quality and the audio issues with the HV30 can be dealt with by using an external mic. My questions have to do with editing. Since I will be shooting things that will require a great deal of editing AND I will be learning this as I go, I am looking for the best way to go. I don't have very much experience with this.

I have read numerous things in regards to editing and I'm quite confused. I have been told that using tape will take a long period of time to upload to my computer prior to editing(one hour of shooting will take one hour to upload). On the other hand, I have read that the HF100 will take even longer, maybe up to three times the amount of material (One hour of shooting will take three hours to upload), Is this accurate???

Also, I have read that editing will be more difficult with the HF100 than with the HV30. Is this true??? It would seem to me that once the material is uploaded editing would be similiar whether it came from tape or a memory stick. Am I wrong with this???

So, as a beginner in this field and being someone that will be learning the shooting and editing aspects to all of this any thoughts on my questions would be greatly appreciated.

The HV30 is a great B-roll camera for the A1. With some calibrating, you can get the cameras' color to be pretty much exacly in sync with each other. The only problem you will run into with the HV30 as a B-roll is that its 1-ccd so its low-light performance won't be as good as the A1.

According to the specs on the HV30, you can output at 60i. However, even at 30p, you can transcode it to 60i in post, providing your NLE supports it (and I think just about all current NLEs do). Another alternative is to transcode the output from the A1 to 30p. Either way should be a "six of one, half dozen of the other" (equal) proposition.

Best regards,

I checked the bhphoto.com, but the camcorder there was $759.95, and at 6th avenue is $738.96, somewhat cheaper (actually, the cheapest, which is always good for film makers with low budget :]Â ), so , i was wondering if something was wrong with the product and/or the store...

Do you guys have any info???

I have a Canon XH-A1 and I need a second HD camcorder as a second camcorder in scenes I shoot.  I cannot afford another $3300 for another A1, so I am considering the Canon Vixia H30 which shoots HDV at 30p. Since the XH-A1 shoots HDV at 60i, will I have noticeable artifacts in scenes shot with both camcorders when I burn in SD? When I burn in HD? I don't want to do the experiment if the footage is not almost the same.  Thanks for any answers and speculation.
