Hello,

Thought that this forum seemed the place to ask my question,

I'm a trainee Sports Journalist at University at the moment and for part of my TV Production module I've been asked to make a Newsworthy TV Package,

I was hoping to be able to record my local team Harrogate Town FC during a game but I don't have a camera so was just wondering what the best camera would be for recording the match and able to catch the goals that are scored in good quality.

I am willing to pay upto around £150 but may go upto £350 if pushed to my limit,

Thanks,

Here's a first look at the Canon C300 Cine Style CMOS Sensor Video Camera. Built upon all the best bits and more from their HDSLR line of cameras, the C300 looks to be an awesome rig for those interested in serious filmmaking. However, the price of the camera body and lenses put it right into the range of the RED ONE without the same powerful image resolution.

Had they made this new rig intended for the Prosumer/Pro market, they would have dropped another 'atom bomb' on the DSLR industry. Hopefully, they'll put all that tech into the 5D MkIII! In the meantime, enjoy the tremendous advances canon has made in removing the 'jello effect', moire and noise at high ISO.

Hi there,

My name is Ben and I have been tasked by my boss to create a short informational video about our company. I have a background in video production, but it was a long time ago (about 10 years). The editing software hasn't changed much from when I was elbow deep in the media world, but cameras have changed a lot. I used to use DV tapes, but now there are a lot of digital and flash drive based cameras.

My question is which type of camera would be adequate for what I'm trying to do? I've priced lighting kits already and we have Adobe editing software, so really it's the camera I'm curious about. I don't think we'll want to spend more than $500 on a camera.

Will I be able to get a polished look from a camera that cheap? Cameras have gotten so cheap nowadays, but are they good quality? I see a lot of them cost under $300 and say they record in 1080HD.

Any help would be great. Thanks guys.

Hey guys,

This is my first post on here so bear with me. I hear doing forums is always a good way to get advice and answers on topics, so here goes:

My wife and a friend of ours have started a new web series to be posted on video sites such as youtube, etc. We have experience with acting having worked on real movie sets, as well as script writing (which is what I went to school for), but none of us have any real experience with filming itself. My question is, to make the movie come out as professional as possible, what are some camera angles/transitions, etc. to use to get the right effect? Or rather, the most efficient effect?

The movie contains zombies and will be fast paced. We are filming in the woods and most of the footage will be during the day. The first couple of episodes are background, so its mostly discussion between two characters. I just don't want to shoot the film from one angle the entire time and thus make it boring. Any advice?

Hi!

I am a beginner lyricist and guitarist. I want to pursue song writing, not performing. I'd like to buy a cam that allows me to share the music I've written, and video blog as well. I've looked at the flip video ultra, as it's been recommended for video blogging. What do you think about this cam for recording my songs as well? Do I need a microphone?

My humble thanks!

I"ve recently graduated with a film degree from the University of North Texas. Unlike many of my fellow students, I wasn't blessed with the financial ability to buy a camera (or have one purchased for me) upon graduation. SO, I find myself as a director without anything to direct with! I'm looking for a camera (DSLR or otherwise) that would be affordable on a shoestring budget like mine. I can swing from $1000.00 to $1500.00, approximately. A starting kit (body, zoom lens, etc) is all I really need for now. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I've been editing on a small scale for a couple years now and on final cut express for about a year but next year I will be a senior in high school and will be doing an independent film course and I am probably going into film in college so I need a good camera. I will be going to italy in two weeks with a leadership group and I have been asked to make a film recording the trip and the work put into it but I need to get a good camera preferably under $1000 which I know is ridiculous but I figure y'all know what is best and can help me

As a person who enjoys filming outdoors, especially during severe weather events, and having seen lots of videos on YouTube about severe storms including derechos, downbursts, and even a few tornadoes, I have developed and invented a way that everyone should use to keep all that rain out of their camera while filming, so you don't have to retreat so far back when the rain starts pouring down.

Usually, blankets, bed sheets, and sometimes even towels, come in those zippered transparent plastic bags, especially at the store. If you have recently bought any of those items that came in one of those plastic bags, instead of tossing the bag, you can use it to keep your camera dry in the rain.

All you need to do is put your camera inside the plastic bag, zip the bag closed, and you will be great to go film the next severe weather event, as long as of course you don't stand close to or downwind of any big trees lest you get hit by falling tree branches! And neither should you be on any hills lest you get struck by lightning.

I do however need to say this, if there is a tornado warning, you should be indoors, preferrably in the basement, as especially the middle of the country far from any large bodies of water does tend to have a lot of very destructive and violent (F-3 and stronger) tornadoes.

Hi,

Recently I filmed an event with 6 cameras. The filming lasted for about 3 hours, so that's 18 hours of footage. Now I need to edit the footage from each camera into one 3 hour video (for different angles). And rather than cutting pieces out of each source (which would take a long time) I was wondering if there's some kind of software where each source plays at the same time in a window, then I just hit a key to send which source I want to be using to a "master output"? So say I wanted to have angle A currently being showed then cut to Angle B, I could just hit a key and then that would happen on the master output which is being recorded into the 3 hour video.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense to anyone, I'm new to this.

Many thanks,

I use a Canon XH-A1 to videotape barrel races and need to make it where contestants can view their race from earlier in the day. My problem is that I only have one camera and I'm still using it to film other races that continue throughout the day. I typically have my laptop so I can hook up a different camera to it that uses mini DV tapes but don't want to spend much money. Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent camcorder that uses mini DV tapes I can purchase for this purpose? I saw some tape decks but they were out of my market.

Whether working in film, video or digital media you must have a process for preparation, acquisition and processing of your imagery. Having 'workflow protocols' are the steps you take to make sure you're using the right camera for the job, have all the proper settings selected on your camera prior to shooting and that there's a clear record of what images, video or digital files came from where prior to getting them into an editing bay.

With DSLR cameras there is no exception to this rule and in fact you'll have to be more detailed and plan better than you would with a traditional video or film camera. Here's a vid by Director of Photography Shane Hurlbut, ASC as he breaks down the 'Camera Protocols' necessary for DSLR shooters. Though he shoots for high-end TV and Motion Picture projects, he has the exact same workflow issues you do or will using a DSLR for shooting video. It's definitely worth a look.

Hi, I've been asked to shoot a sport I've never filmed before - volleyball. I'm an experienced sports videographer/journalist and I've covered a lot of sport, football (UK version), rugby, cricket, athletics (T&F), boxing, tennis etc etc but never volleyball. I've got some ideas of camera positions, low to accentuate the height of the guys playing the sport, high (around the height of the net for some dynamic "spike" footage) but I wondered if anyone here might have experience of shooting the sport they might be prepared to share.

Best regards

I'm a quadriplegic, no movement below my shoulders, I drive my wheelchair with a joystick chin controller, very simple, if i push the joystick forward and release that will put the chair in drive, then any direction I push on the joystick I go, I'm looking for somebody that has knowledge/ideas for me to be able to use the record on/off, zoom in/out, pan/tilt with my chin and/or mouth on my panasonic HMC150 and PROAIM JR. PAN TILT in my chair

take a look to see my set up so far seankelleys.com/camera-set-up.html

I have a Panasonic HMC150
PROAIM JR. PAN TILT HEAD WITH JOYSTICK CONTROL
invacare electric wheelchair (2005 - TDX 3 Storm with 2 - 12 volt batteries)

hopefully i'll be able to use my chair batteries as a power source

still need a monitor - I was recommended marshall or Ikan v5600

I use a modified xbox 360 controller to play video games so one idea is to use the same idea. video

I was thinking about having a control box similar to my Xbox 360 controller made, so I would use the pan/tilt I have and buy a Zoom/Focus/Iris & Zoom Control not necessarily this brand

inside the pan/tilt controller there are two plugs going from the circuit board to the joystick, each plug has 3 wires, so unplug and wires from joystick and extend wires to a new control box, I could have the original control mounted somewhere else on my chair so I wouldn't have to put the rather large original components in the new controller, just use the joystick control wires going to the new controller, then take apart the Zoom/Focus/Iris & Zoom Control and find a place to mount on new controller using the original plug to put in the back of camera

I also have a r/c truck i control using an airplane controller, I only use the right joystick, it does forward, reverse, and turn, video of me controlling truck

I'm sure it won't be easy but any ideas, suggestions, and help will be appreciated

if you read this post thanks for looking

Hey guys... So here's my problem.

I have a Canon XS Rebel, and i always shoot on RAW mode. I Use Digital Photo Professional to view and organize my pictures and i use Photoshop Camera Raw and Photoshop to edit my photos. My problem is that when i take a picture with a different color mode on my camera (Sepia, black and white, or even if i change the saturation of colors) they show up on DPP but not on ACR. And that is really getting on my nerves, because i might take THE PERFECT PICTURE on my camera, but then i can't edit it using PCR, and i seldom get the exact same colors as i did with the camera. So heres an example. The left one was exported using DPP, and i didnt edited it, just straighted it. The one on the right was exported using PCR, and did not show the sepia tone.

I understand RAW is not supposed to carry any color change information, so i would have to shoot in JPEG if i wanted the sepia tone....but is there any way to bypass this? So i can edit my Sepia picture on PCR?

Thank Guys!

I have for sale two Sony cameras. Both were used mainly for Wedding Videography I did as a side gig, and both worked great for every single Wedding I shot. I have always taken great care of them both and kept them both in their own case.

Hi,

I'm new on here, so be gentle :) I'm just getting back into filming after many years, the last time I was on an official course in TV & Film production we were using betamax!

I've recently been tasked with the honour of producing a DVD for a voluntary group I work with and have so far managed to get the following items: A Toshiba K80HE Camcorder (just won on ebay and awaiting) and a copy of Pinnacle Studio 14 HD.

I'm on a really tight budget hence the cheaper model HD camcorder, but as I progress further into this hobby I'd like to look at upgrading as I go.

On the basis that my budget for cameras is around the £200 mark, I'm obviously interested in second-hand models and was wondering how the quality of different formats compared? I have an old JVC VHSC model I got in New York around 13 years ago, and although it works fine, the picture quality and mono sound aren't going to make a good DVD.

So if I was looking at a good semi-pro camera a few years old, what format would still give the quality needed for DVD production? Hi8, MiniDV, Digital 8 etc?

I'm ideally after a full sized unit rather than the compact models as I already have a good solid tripod and intend to use it.

Thanks guys, any advice greatly appreciated.

Steve Wiese and the Zacuto team are coming back with the "Great Shootout 2010" in which they bring the latest digital video cameras out and see how their imagery stacks up against traditional 35mm Film. This time the line up is all DSLR's and like last time, they'll be shot side by side with a 35mm film rig, professionally color graded and compared head to head. The big names like Canon, Nikon, Panasonic and others will be on the line for comparison by some of the top DP's and Digital Cinematographers in the business. If you want to know more about how your current DSLR or intended purchase stacks up, standby for the "Great Shootout 2010".

I am a reporter/journalist and I am looking to learn how to start shooting my own stories. I need advice on a good camera for a beginner to buy. I want the best camera for a beginner but at the same time it could be useful for someone who is more advanced. I would prefer one that is not too heavy. Price doesn't matter, I want the best one I can get. Any suggestions? Also, what would you recommend for accessories... tripod, bag, mic, etc.

Thanks so much!!

As a former Combat Cameraman seeing footage from our growing number of war zones hits me on multiple sides. I can see well beyond the propaganda and both understand the situation from both the war fighter and concerned civilian perspectives. When I first joined my Combat Camera Unit I quickly realized I had much to live up to. My fellow teammates and I were the 'technical descendants' of Director John Ford among a host of famous filmmakers and photographers down through the decades.

Though I suspected it beforehand, I found that ours was a unique profession. We were warriors, but our job was 'Telling the Story of War'. I remember talking with some young Marines on a mission and they couldn't understand why I carried a camera instead of a rifle. My answer was, "I carry a rifle too, but if you see me change out my camera for the weapon we're in trouble!"

I passed on the 'torch' years ago and now a new generation is doing what I did by taking the latest technical innovations into the field to tell today's war stories. Shot with the Canon 5DMkII The video "Why We Fight" by Army Specialist Matt Freire and 1st Lieutenant Tyler Ginter gives us the story of one unit of the Afgan Special Forces from their point of view.

In this day and age, camera makers
are vying for the rank of the best by rendering superlative features
that are constantly out doing each other day after day. But here is a
camera discovered from a dusty attic that is making news. Called
"Daguerreotype," it is a wooden sliding box camera produced by the
Paris company Susse Freres in 1839.

Discovered as part of an inheritance in Germany, the antique piece will allow
photography enthusiasts rewrite history. Westlicht, a private photo
gallery and auction house in Vienna, plans to auction off this piece of
history on May 26. Believed to be the world's oldest commercially
manufactured camera, Westlicht said the Vienna camera has never been
restored.

Up to now, experts said that apart from some documents there was no proof
that the so-called "Daguerreotype," a wooden sliding box camera
produced by the Paris company Susse Freres in 1839, really existed.
Discovered as part of an inheritance in Germany, the antique piece will
allow photography enthusiasts rewrite history.

The camera belongs to a US-based scholar and was inherited from his father,
a technical photography professor at Munich University. The starting
bid is $132,000, but the final price for the 168-year-old gadget is
expected to be way past a million euros ($1,329,000). This makes it the
most expensive camera in the world.

Invented by French chemist Lois Daguerre, a daguerreotype is an early type of
photograph. It produces a direct image on a polished silver surface
that bears a coating of silver halide particles, deposited by iodine
bromide or chlorine vapours. As there was no negative original like in
modern photography, no copies of pictures could be made.

Lately I've been putting up videos shot with DSLR rigs. Well just to show that traditional ENG style cam's are by no means out of the picture yet, here's one by Mirko Faienza called "My Grandfather's Garden" It was shot with a Panasonic AG-HPX500 and the stock 17.5 x lens. It's is a bit pricier rig than the average VM reader is thinking about getting, but it does show you don't necessarily need full on shallow DOF to get great imagery. Enjoy.

Here's a video by Vallette Thierry showing how to map a photograph to a 3D object and then simulating a camera move. This is a really cool technique if you're pulling your hair out trying to build virtual sets for greenscreen. Now I've seen a similar technique built in After Effects, but this one is pretty direct. Now I'm not sure what 3D program was used, but the technique should be fairly simple to duplicate in other programs. If you're too broke to shell out for a 3D program, you can get BLENDER for free.

Hello,

Would you know of any company or person that may be interested in comping a couple of compact HD video cameras for my Malaria expeditions?

In return I will advertise and promote them through the book/documentary/lecture series and website. Panasonic has already given us a Toughbook laptop for field editing.

I am married to an native Amazonian, have a private preserve
there. In March I will be starting my expeditions to remote villages in the Peruvian Amazon to deliver
Malaria nets to jungle children. 3,000 children die every day from Malaria.

I will shoot a documentary and write a book about every aspect of the expeditions as well as give real time updates to US schools and the public via internet.

The book/DVD series is entitled Netting Adventures. I have an Emmy Nominated producer on board for the documentary.

If you visit my website <www.AmazonDetours.com> you can review more info.

Thank you for your input.

Sincerely,
