Greetings,

I am just starting out in film and am having trouble getting the information I want answered by any of the suits at the big electronic stores. Unfourtunate for me, I have no friends with experience in these matters either. I am looking for some (i call them simple) answers, and I am hoping that someone here might help me.

The project: I am doing a documentary of a precarious group of people and require equipment and know how.

1st question: What Camcorder should I look into. I have a budget of about 700 dollars, and am looking at a mic, and a software compliment for this camcorder. I am hearing alot of good things about the Canon Vixia, but I have no idea if the information is accurate.

2nd question: I have heard that Vegas Software would be above my grade for a documentary, but better to have it and not need it I always say. I want to eventually burn it to a dvd to watch, would Vegas work well for this and say normal burn software?

3rd question: With a documentary I am going to be interviewing people in some pretty noisy places, and would require the tools to turn down the volume levels of the area to better hear the subject's response. Which program would I use, or would it depend on the mic or camcorder?

Any help would be appreciated...

I'm trying to transfer video from a Canon ZR800 camcorder to my pc using a 4-pin to 4-pin firewire. The pc recognizes the camcorder no problem, but as soon as I start the transfer process, the video image in the preview screens of both the camera and the pc show that the video is randomly pixelating as the video is transferring.

When I disconnect the firewire connection the video image on the camera plays smoothly....plug it back into the pc with the cable and it pixelates.

I have tried the camera and the cable on two different computers with the same result.

Also tried turning off the lcd screen on the camera as the video is transferred and still see pixelation on the computer screen

Is it likely that the cable is defective or am I missing something?

Many thanks,
Helen

Looking for
a camcorder and really need some help. My old Canon XM2 (GL2) is just not doing
the job anymore, and I am tired of tapes and standard res. Not to mention it's
starting to look antique, so it's not really giving me that professional confidence
boost when I pull it out.

What I am
looking for is something like this:

- Full HD
avchd

- Midsize
with handle. Need a pro look for my business so a small one, won't do the job.

- Record to
SD card and/or internal memory (flash or HD)

- Decent
wide angle (or a cam to which a good wide-adapter can be bought at a reasonable
price)

- Decent
battery time.

- Heavy
enough for steady handling, light enough to be able to shoot using the handle
for some time.

- Good low
light quality as I will be shooting lots inside and not always with optimal
light.

- Generally
speaking, image quality more important than audio quality.

- Maximum
price: Around 4,500 USD / 2.800 GBP

These are
the cams I have been looking at:

- Sony
HXR-NX70E

- Canon
XF100

- Panasonic
AG-HMC40/41

- Sony
NEX-VG2OEH

The Sony
HXR-NX70 gets great lowlight reviews, but it's expensive and I don't know if I
would be paying for lots of stuff I will never need (like the jungle-thing,
waterproof, dustproof etc)

The Canon
XF100 also at the very top of my budget, but seems like an overall great
camera.

The
Panasonic is affordable and I think would certainly do the job had I always a
perfect light set-up, but I am worried that the lense is small and that it does
a bad job in less than great light. I am tempted by an offer right now of 2040
GBP for the camera + XLR-adapter + iPad.

The Sony
NEX-VG2, i Just saw this, looks different and interesting, but can't compare
the lense really, so am fairly clueless.

Any cams I
have left out?

And which of these would you suggest and why?

(Note: Could not find a general camcorder forum, only brand specific ones. Please feel free to move this thread to any correct forum I might have missed.)

Hello,

I am a student filmmaker and I am about to purchase a new camera. I am debating between a DLSR (something like the Canon 7d) or a prosumer camcorder (like the Canon XA10.) My budget is around $2,000 or so.

I already have a digital camera (the Nikon d80, which is decent) so I am leaning towards a camcorder. I feel that since if I am trying to be a filmmaker and not a photographer a DSLR is not the right direction to go. However, a lot of my friends have and recommend them because they are versatile (in terms of lenses and whatnot.)

Any comments or advice? Is there another brand that I should consider? Do you have any other recommendations for cameras?

(Just a note as far as my post production goes-- I edit on final cut pro 6 and have a 1 TB external hard drive.)

I have a consumer grade Panasonic PV-GS90P camcorder. One of the setup options on it is aspect ratio 16:9 or 4:3. I've always had it set on 4:3 and always had standard definition televisions in the house. We now have two high definition TVs. Is there any pluses or minuses to changing the aspect ratio to 16:9? Am I taking the same number of pixels and spreading them out? This is a newbie question but that's how guys like me learn. From the pros.

I currently own a sony hvr z5u camcorder. But I'm looking to purchase another video recorder for my growing production company at this time. With the HDSLR cameras on the rise in the industry for both video and photography. Im stuck between another sony z5u or a hdslr 5d. Can anyone help me with this by giving me input on the pros and cons between the two. To give me insight on which would be the better purchase. All comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hi can you help. I have recently been given a samsung hyper dis 65x camcorder. I used it for the first time this weekend videoing my daughter show jumping with her horse. When i got home and watched it through the tv the picture quality was fine. Removed memory card and watched it on my laptop….quality also very good. However when i uploaded and saved onto my computer using the software provided the quality on playback was very poor. The horses legs and show jumps seemed to be moving about in small square blocks. Every now and again the main image in the video is clear and the surrounding images are jumping about. Any suggestions greatly appriciated d x

Hello, I'm rather new to videography as a business and am currently saving up from some gear via photography and renting video equipment.. I just recently found a group of film makers who use only dslr as video cameras which is a nice option because it's multi use and you get the nice DoF..

So here is my question, I mainly do wedding and party videography and was wondering if the traditional 3ccd prosumer is the best option or would a dslr rig be any good for weddings?

I mean does it really just come down to preference or are there some strong advantages for not using a dslr for this type of shooting?

I ride Motorcycle and I do what's called Vlogging. I like to record my rides and commentate during my ride. I am looking for an external mic, no shake feature. I will mount this on my bike, some shake is acceptable, I have been looking high and low for this product. I have tried the VADO HD, the Kodak i8 not what I want. Is there any products out there that fit this bill. I don't want to spend the kings ransom either but I do know that for something decent it will cost something. Just wanted to have some options to look over so that I know what I need to spend and also get the best bang for my buck.

I"ve recently graduated with a film degree from the University of North Texas. Unlike many of my fellow students, I wasn't blessed with the financial ability to buy a camera (or have one purchased for me) upon graduation. SO, I find myself as a director without anything to direct with! I'm looking for a camera (DSLR or otherwise) that would be affordable on a shoestring budget like mine. I can swing from $1000.00 to $1500.00, approximately. A starting kit (body, zoom lens, etc) is all I really need for now. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi All,

I am looking to purchase a camcorder for use with the Articulate E-Learning Software. I will need the camcorder to be able to:

- Shoot training vignettes (for example, a discussion between a professional and a client)

- Have good audio capabilities (we have a Snowball mic, so being compatible with this would be awesome!)

- Compatible with PCs (and have some video editing software if possible)

- Is easy to use (I am by no means an expert)

We would like to keep the cost relatively low (around $500) tops but cannot seem to find anything beyond a pocket cam (which I have been advised may not be the best bet for my needs).

Any help or advice that could be provided would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I'm Tyler. Im going to college for video production soon. I'm debating what camcorder to get. I really like the Panasonic AG-HMC40 because of all the reviews i read about it were good. It's a great deal at only 2000 dollars too. I was also looking at the JVC GZ HD7U, but i dont like the .tod format. I have a macbook pro and i use final cut express. I just want an advanced camcorder that is not to complicated and will last me through college. Is the Panasonic AG-HMC40 a generally good camcorder? I really like it but i need to know if ifs a good camcorder. Thank you

Hey guys

i'm looking for a digital camcorder to record plays. It should have

- HD video (720p or even 1080p)

- recording time up to 2 hrs (-> internal harddrive with good storage)

- good low light capacity

- manual focus

Any suggestions? My budget: up to 1000$. If there are any good AND cheap camcorders (around 300$) i would consider buying 3 of them, having the opportunity to shoot from different angles.

Thanks alot

oh, don't worry about the microphone, i have a zoom H1 that does a great job. :)

Hello everyone. I'm new here, but I love the site and I love the forums.

I've worked in independent film for about 4 years, but mostly as a co-producer and sometimes Unit Production Manager. I'm just now getting my hands dirty with the technical stuff. I've shot weddings before and want to buy a prosumer camcorder for future weddings and short movies. The whole wedding thing kind of rules out the DSLRs that are so popular now.

I've been leaning toward Panasonic. Particularly the HPX-170. But I'm concerned with using the P2 technology. I wanted to edit via FCE 4.0 on my Macbook Pro, but I'm discovering FCE doesn't support P2.

I'm wary to try upgrading to Final Cut Studio for fear it will slow my laptop down immensely. But I also wanted the CCD sensors vs. the CMOS that Sony and Canon are putting in all their cameras now, which leaves Panasonic as my only option.

I looked at the HVX200 because it records P2 AND Mini-DV but I want a camera that records 1080p and 24p, and I feel like there is no perfect option for what I want. Here's what I want to do:

Price - $2000-$4000
XLR inputs
1080p and 24p
1/3" CCD (ideally)

Any ideas? Please help! I'm drowning in specs.

Hello!

I am new on this forum and I'm starting film school in a couple of weeks. One of the materials I will need for this semester is, of course, a camera.

My school suggests http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/597358-REG/Canon_3543B001_ZR960_MiniDV_Camcorder_.html/

but I can use another camcorder as long as it can perform the same tasks or more.

I read the reviews on it and it seems to be a nice camera but for casual use and I would like to get a camera that I will be able to use in future projects such as short films and documentaries, instead of buying a basic one now and then having to buy another one.

I saw this other Canon on sale and the reviews seem to be better. A bit more money but it seems that I would get a lot more (?)

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/671645-REG/Canon_4355B001_VIXIA_HF_M30_Dual.html

I don't know as of yet what exact projects we will be doing during the semester but I do know that there will be a lot of file transferring to the computer in order to upload it on the class forum. - I have a <span style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;">MacBookPro7,1- so I was also wondering if flash memory was easier for this or if MiniDV was a better option.</span>

<span style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;">If anyone could let me know which camcorder is a better option or direct me to another better deal, I would really appreciate it!</span>

<span style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;">Thank you. :)</span>

Panasonic Camcorder PV-GS39 plus Extras!

This camcorder is used in excellent working condition, it was purchased brand new 4 years ago and was used sparingly, used primarily as a mini-dv deck used to capture mini-dv tapes onto my computer for editing.

* Please note: camcorder comes without the strap attached to it, I cut it off because I used it mostly for capturing video and the strap was always in my way.

This auction comes with all of the following:

(1) Panasonic PV-GS39 Camcorder (with 30x optical zoom, and still photo capability)
Camcorder Battery (CGR DUO6 Li-Ion)
(1) AC adapter/battery charger with plug in cables
(1) AV Cord
(1) Firewire Cord (for capturing video for editing)
(1) Mini DV camcorder digital video head cleaner (used only a few times)

(5) Panasonic Professional (DVM63) Mini DV tapes (These tapes were used one time only and stored in plastic cases, never recorded over or de-magnetized, or bulk erased.

Can anyone recommend a good solution for micing a camcorder to record sound in front and behind the camera. Obviously a shotgun mic works great for the subject in front of the camera, but if the person doing the recording is also asking the questions, the shotgun mic attenuates and destorts the volume.

My current solution is to use 2 mics, a shotgun and a wireless lavalier for the interviewer behind the camera. The only problem with it is that it requres more components to merge the 2 signals, and it's cumbersome to set up and adjust properly.

Does anyone have any alternative approaches that they recommend?

I have been doing a lot of research on several used prosumer camcorders. For example: Canon xl1, xl2, and gl2, and the Panasonic dvx100.

I want to stay in the $1,000 price range. I intend to use the camera primarily for youth sports applications. I know these cameras are probably overkill for that application...

I'm trying to decice if I should go that route, or just go with a good new hand-held model like the Canon Vixia HF S21, which allows you to shoot in 24p, 30p, or 60i. (just like the dvx100).

I also don't want to invest a ton of money in NLE software.

Please let me know if I'm going overboard with the prosumer models I'm considering, based on what I can get with a newer model and my limited budget for video editing software. If it helps to know, my laptop has 1.86 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. No idea if that's good enough.

Thanks for helping to educate a real newbie!!!

Does anyone here have experience with Blu Ray camcorders - specifcally the Hitachi models? Some of the reviews I read for the DZ-BD9HA haven't been great but supposedly they've made a lot of improvements with the DZ-BD10HA?  I found a coupon code for 20% off ("SAVEBIG" at http://www.hitachibd.com) but not sure - I don't really know enough about Blu-Ray in general to know if the technology is worth the price. Any advice? Thanks!
