Greetings. I have been looking for ways to make money with the video skills I learned in college. I came to the conclusion that I could easily shoot real estate photos and videos for agents in the small community I live in. (I will be getting a Canon D7 in the coming months, so would use that.)

The idea is, going to the major real estate firms out here, I think its only 2. Going to them with the option to contract me as there video/photo guy. Instead of connecting with the countless agents, and working for them. Connecting with the firms itself. so that when any of its many agents needs photos or video, the firm just says "we got a guy for that, we'll send him out tomorrow."

Is this a somewhat good business plan for such a venture? And if so, how would I appropriately charge for such a service? a standard by the hour rate? Or on a per visit system? And what would be an appropriate cost for such work? I wanna make money, but I also wanna be competitively priced. I can debate semiotics in film, but was taught NOTHING about video business practices in college lol. So any comments or thoughts are welcomed.

Thank you for your time.

I found this interesting article that talks about 7 types of clients that should be avoided. In my personal experience in the video production world I have stumble upon at least 5 of this clients. In my opinion the worst and most common in the video business are the "cheapskate clients", which are not willing to pay for your hard work and expect a lot of things for less.

I would really like to hear how Videomaker community deals with this type of clients. Any awful experience? Any advise for the video business newbies?

Hello Videomaker community

I'm asking this because I have like 100+ GB footage from clients. To all pros here, what do you do with your client raw footage after you hand over the final production?. Do you keep them store in DVD or external hardrive or do you delete them?.

Hey guys, I'm new to the whole freelance business. I am 20 years old, going to be a sophomore at Salisbury University in Maryland and I have a few questions that I'm hoping you more experienced business savvy folk would know.

I am experienced with a wide variety of programs, including the adobe suite (premiere, photoshop, after effects) I also am beginning to become very proficient with Final Cut Studio (Final Cut X holds 50/50 approval in my opinion) I also have good tech skills when it comes to HTML, web design, and computer repair.

Enough about me and unto the questions.

I recently completed a video for the university (http://vimeo.com/25534229) if you want to check it out and get a feel for what I can do or need to work on. I also have 3 other videos in production. 2 more for the university and another for a Physical Therapist who is making training videos.

My question is how to I gage pricing? where do I start? I charged the university $1000 for the 7 min vid, I way undercut myself. I want to charge a competitive rate but under charge a little due to my lack of "accredited" experience. what do I do here?

Should I open up my own business and apply for a fictitious name? I want to ride of taxes and save some bucks! I have the name and I also own my own equipment. Sony FX-7 and a T2I canon. I have 2 editing computers one a PC tower the other a MacPro laptop. I have all the tools but am unsure if I should wait?

I have got a ton of offers and can take them if I am willing to expand. I am just afraid that school, work, and my social life will seriously all fail if I try to take on to much? I am very driven and LOVE, I mean love this industry but I want to keep above a 3.0.

last question is, should I transfer to an art school? My university is a 5/10 when it comes to providing what I'm looking for. It has a fully working HD studio but the kids are not talented to make use of it. as a freshman I took control and quickly realized the lack of skill that was available. I am not knocking these students because we were ALL there once but to move ahead I need skilled co-workers/partners/students.

I really want to keep making great strides with this and any help you folks can add would make my day! If any of you are in the Maryland area or up in PA near Harrisburg let me know because I'll take anyone who helps me and wants to go, out to eat. knowledge isn't free, I greatly appreciate any that you'll share :)

Thanks guys!

Full, or part time, what is your number one money making gig? What percentage of your total video production income is derived from this category? Others? Mine are:

* funerals & memorials = 45 percent

* school events = 25 percent

* dance recitals = 12 percent

* community events = 6 percent

* web video for business = 6 percent

* weddings = 5 percent

* other = 1 percent

There are other incidental gigs, and sometimes there can be a higher average on any given month in one or more categories, but at the end of the year, for the past few years, this has been the case for my video production business. I no longer put forth a huge effort to generate wedding video production. Weddings continue to come via referrals from past clients.

I'm trying to break into wedding and special event videography. I'm graduating high school next month and I would love to shoot a couple of weddings over the summer before I start college. I plan to major in business administration.

I have already shot my cousin's wedding two month's ago and everybody loved it. I shot it with a SONY DSR-2100 DV camcorder and edited it with Adobe Premiere Elements version 7. I burned the video to DVD on my Dell Win7 desktop pc. Everybody tells me that I have what it takes to start a home based video business and work myself through school.

For all the experienced wedding videographers out there, what advice would you give an aspiring event videographer? Is there any good books or reference material geared for an 18 year old like me? Although I have shot a wedding, most of my experience is covering school projects and my own families special occasions. How can I market myself and get my first paying gig?

After getting laid off from work last year, I got the courage to start shooting wedding videos professionally. I have been shooting videos as a hobby all my life but I never knew how I could generate income with it.

I just found a great reference that coaches you on everything you need to get started in videotaping weddings and other special events. Its available as a Kindle ebook.

http://www.amazon.com/Photography-Videography-Business-Shoestring-ebook/dp/B004OA6EUM/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

I used the book's sample advertising and advertised in my local Sunday paper and after one month, I got 3 bookings.

Those of you who DO market your video or other business, products and related services, HOW do you market?

What has worked best for you (other than building relationships and getting referrals) in the real business world?

What have you actually tried that has NOT worked for you at all, given that you actually put some time into it?

If you DO NOT engage in direct-mail marketing, why? Too daunting? Too expensive? Not effective? Zero R.O.I.?

EarlC on "Marketing Challenge for All"

This is nothing I haven't written about before, either here or on my video marketing and production blog at E.C. Come, E.C. Go, established in 2004 and still going strong ... well, fairly strong ;-) I want to refresh my tried and proven series of direct-mail postcard marketing programs with independent professional video services providers who actively read Videomaker.com and the forums who may, or not, be enjoying a steady stream of inquires, phone calls, e-mails or website visitors.

Ignore what you've previously experienced, read or heard about direct-mail marketing. Open up your vision and THINK about what I'm going to share with you. Then, let's see HOW MANY of you are willing to commit to a 90-day, six-month or, dare I hope, one-year experiment with me. Let's see HOW MANY will actually take up this challenge.

Then, in 30-days, 90-days, so on and so forth, maybe we can get discussions going here based on reports from those who start, come on or drop off, and see what each of you did, how far you took it, and the results ... positive, negative or neutral.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT EARL?

Any of you who have read my marketing articles know I am a firm believer of small direct-mail postcard campaigns focused on specific areas of interests — dance schools, school events, collective or specific youth sports such as baseball, basketball, swimming, soccer, etc. and many, many others. What I mean by "small" and "focused" is less than 100 units per campaign, and as mentioned above, postcards designed to appeal to a specific area of interest.

HERE'S THE CHALLENGE!

DO A GOOGLE SEARCH or use any other method of identifying ANY facility, school, organization, club or group(s) of interest within your service area. Get addresses and as often as you can, GET SPECIFIC NAMES! Someone to address that postcard to: the counselor, owner, director, choreographer, events planner, organizer, etc.

DESIGN A POSTCARD with minimum wording, a call to action and a promise you can keep — a special price, special offer, something unique and appealing that addresses the "what's in it for me" question that EVERYONE you try to sell something to will ask, and not always ask aloud.

COMMIT TO MAILING a minimum of ONE postcard a day, on average, (that's right JUST ONE, although MORE is better) and stick to the commitment. It takes only minutes to come up with 30 or so viable addresses, and often names, for most active events for this. Ten minutes, or less, a day if you ONLY look for one, identify it, address the postcard, stick a stamp to it and put it in the mailbox.

KEEP A RECORD of what happens. What interest group(s) you selected. Who you mailed to. How many you mailed. How many responses you get. How many sales, gigs or opportunities you received. Then come here and give us all your updates for the duration of your commitment, be it 30 or 90 days, or longer.

YOU WILL ENJOY a better than 5 percent response ratio. I've been doing this for years and I've averaged an eight percent or better level of response to each direct mail campaign and batch. I've ALWAYS done better than break even when factoring in my costs and time, always getting MORE business income than what I invested. Yes, a REAL R.O.I. (return on investment).

THE SECRET TO SUCCESS is as follows:

Persistency, consistency, commitment WILL generate responses. You ARE gaining eyeballs, and TELL yourself this until you believe it, even if you DON'T receive ONE response over a 90-day period. People WILL read your postcard, many of them will save it for reference purposes because even if they don't perceive a need today, they will want to keep it as a resource for tomorrow's, next week's or next month's special party, event, or even to replace a videographer they've become displeased with, or one that has flaked out on them. These reasons and more have resulted in our getting gigs over the period of the campaign.

Keep your records because you WANT to repeat mailings, either with the SAME direct-mail piece, or a revised one, but still with your prominent business name branding present so you continue with the association, visibility and linkage, and familiarity that comes from repetition. DON'T however, overdo it by getting rambunctious and saturating your addresses with something tantamount to SPAM or JUNK MAIL. That is counter productive, guaranteeing a negative return and direct-to-trash response.

Make your content simple, compelling and ALWAYS include a call to action: "CALL NOW!" "E-mail TODAY!" "BOOK YOUR EVENT before the date is lost!" so on and so forth.

I've included a poll here. Hopefully a good number of you video enthusiasts who are seeking ways to expand, build or develop your business base will take up the Marketing Challenge for ALL and we ALL will learn from the results and responses here over time.

Just DO IT!

Here's some possibilities for discussion ...

How much time, effort and energy do you invest in working, developing and maintaining your social network environment for marketing purposes?
Are you on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter ... others? Do you visit them daily and maintain an ongoing strategy to try and "commercialize" your presence there?
What do you think is the secret to reaching people outside your "friends" and fellow "Tweeters" those who are NOT with you because they LOVE you, but have heard of you and follow you because you offer valid, timely and interesting content or comments?
It seems the social network mostly connects us with people who are already in the same business, share similar lines of thought and marketing need, or are our parents, former girl/boyfriends or co-workers ...
... what's the benefit in that, and how do we reach the "consumers" we're all desperately needing to expand our business reach?
IMHO, LinkedIn though much less popular at large, seems to have the MOST potential for driving legitimate traffic to our websites and business environs from people who would most likely be searching for qualified service providers. Though here also there's a tendency for like-minded people to connect, seems the potential to reach outside our primary sphere of influence is greater if we work and maintain the site.
Any thoughts on this?

EarlC on "Plan NOW for 2011!"

You've got plenty on your mind this next few weeks, but it's not too early to start making plans for your video business operations and marketing strategy for 2011. As soon as you read this, and if you feel ANY inspiration at all, pick up your iPad, laptop or other computer, open your Circus Ponies or other planning software, or grab a pencil and a tablet and start your outline.

Before simply continuing with what you already are doing. For some this is perhaps enough, for others more will be needed to continue to survive the coming year, much less anticipate or consider growth, even expansion of your video business operations.

There will ALWAYS be weddings, or maybe not. But let's just say your wedding business operations are where you want them to be and the referrals are pouring in. Whether you're full time or part time in the video business, there are things you can plan for now that will help you achieve your 2011 income and business goals.

STEP ONE

Go through your 2011 production calendar and note all the holidays and special days: Valentine's Day, President's Day, Tax Day (just kidding), Easter, Memorial Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day and all the other days of observation. Copy them to your planning program.

Aside from weddings, what other possibilities are there for these special days?

• Video greeting cards

• Personal documentaries

• Day in the Life productions

• Community programs & observations

• How to videos on unique Easter egg decoration, cake creation or sugar molds

• Patriotic themed productions

• Small and independent business promotions and web video

• Video StoryTellers!™

STEP TWO

Do some research to identify where, how and to whom you can market for these and other video production/product concepts. A good Google search will generate an abundance of opportunities, groups, clubs, organizations and even generate some new ideas for marketing and potential clients that you never thought of before. Go with the flow and develop some concepts. You don't have to flesh them out now, simply get them down so they will not elude you later.

Make your list and check it twice later.

• Potential new businesses that might be receptive to video in their marketing

• Groups, clubs and organizations that could use video in promoting their programs

• Those small businesses that might have never pursued a video or Web presence

• Church groups planning for their silver, golden or 100th anniversary celebrations

• Memorial themes recognizing members who have died

• Other potential avenues of video need that might often be overlooked

STEP THREE

Jot down some quick notes as they pop into your head. They don't have to make sense, but believe me when you begin working on some freestyle thinking like this little nuggets will get discovered. These can often wind up being nothing more than fool's gold but a few are diamonds in the rough, if you'll kindly overlook the cliché. Decide your best approach after the holidays.

• Develop a direct-mail strategy

• Expand on this, or that idea or concept

• Can I make this happen

• Is this too big for my operation

• What can I do NOW

• What do I need to work on long term

• How saturated is the market for this

Within the first 10 days of the New Year you'll want to visit those notes, concepts and ideas and make an actual action plan for 2011. Action can often accomplish more than reaction, so YOU be the one to get things started.

It's never too early to begin a campaign but we often start too late. February 1, is not the time for mailing out promos or social networking or advertising for Valentine's Day special proposal DVDs (relationship photos put to music and ending in "Will You Marry Me?") or for developing and selling personal Valentine's Day "Roses are red, violets are blue ..." video DVD cards.

It may, in fact, be too late already, but if you get something going during the first half of January, before heads and hearts start leaning toward February 14th and boxes of candy, you can probably open up a whole new approach to speciality video production.

I'm looking to start up a new media production business and am looking for freelance professionals to help with all levels of production. To be a bit more specific, I'm looking to:

1) Find camera(wo)men, audio engineers, editors

2) Get rates and look at portfolios

Basically, I want a rolodex of professionals I can call on, if I need to scale, or for project redundancy. That said, are there any professional registries anyone would recommend looking at? If not, any other suggestions?

Cheers,

I've been doing video production gigs here and there, working as a sole proprietor under just my name, and I've been thinking of forming a single-member LLC instead, so that I can take out business loans, have limited liability, etc.

I also produce music (which I'd like to publish online soon), do audiovisual work for events, and design graphics for T-shirts and other items, all as a sole proprietor under my own name.

Is it possible or advisable to form a single LLC that would include all of these services?

Would I be better off forming separate LLCs for my various services?

A consistent and persistent direct-mail marketing strategy is the single most important thing you can do to sustain, maintain and grow your video production business. I've preached it and proven it, and continue to believe that I can spend preciously limited funds nowhere better nor more effectively than with a continued direct-mail campaign.

This message bears repeating. I've written about it, blogged about it, posted on forums about it and preached about it time and again. When I do a few listen, most put it off and some scoff. Be that as it may, with more than 30 years experience in advertising, publication, promotion and marketing — as well as putting so-called "theory" to practice — I've proven to myself time and again that ANY direct-mail strategy is a better investment over any other method of marketing and advertising, penny for penny.

I've noted in previous posts and blog articles that I've had as much as an eight percent response to small (50-to-100 addresses), targeted direct mail campaigns, when the accepted industry average is still one percent — and THAT is based on mailing thousands of pieces.

My approach is much simpler: a minimum of one half-page-sized postcard a day, on average. You can get by using maximum USPS postcard sizes at 6" long by 4 1/4" high, and currently pay 28-cents per piece to mail. I prefer to use the half-page size (8.5" x 5.5") and pay the prevailing 1st class rate of 44-cents per piece.

Experiments with various weights, sizes and rates and delivery times have resulted in a consistently more positive experience with the heavier card weight, size and first class handling overall, for me. Your mileage may vary. But let's look at this from a cost perspective.

Using one of several available high quality professional print labs around the country (my personal preference for price, quality and turnaround is America's Printer in irvine, California) you can get excellent heavy-weight, coated high quality postcards produced for cents per unit. The minimum for most such website services is 1,000 units.

My 8.5" x 5.5" postcards, 4-color both sides, UV gloss coating on front side (gloss on both sides is nice, but it can generate problems with certain types of address labels and various inks tend to smear easily) run me about $105 per 1K pieces. That's 10.5 cents per unit. Adding shipping and handling, sales tax if any and the current 1st class rate of 44-cents, and you're looking at spending between a half-dollar and 60 cents per unit.

Send out one a day. Hey, send out three a day, you've got a three-year supply ;-) and you've spent between 60 cents and $1.80 a day. Let's say you mail three a day, on average, so you're putting out $54 a month, or $657 a year based on 365 days. You've invested a total of $657 to reach 1,000 homes or businesses or club addresses.

But that card has been seen, and often read by at least three people, tripling your exposure rate. Even if you get a one-percent response resulting in a paid video production job chances are the job paid you back your investment. Two percent, you break even. But, if (and you usually will) you were careful in your direct mail address selections you will get an even higher response level. Three jobs and you're getting a decent return on investment (ROI).

Not to mention the exposure, branding, visibility and linkage, name recognition — and the fact that a properly designed, compelling direct-mail postcard has a longer shelf-life (useful lifespan) than a direct-mail letter or print ad or EXPENSIVE radio/TV spot — making your consistent direct marketing campaign a GREAT eyeballs gatherer. Listen for the calls to come in. Watch for the responses to start, and build over time. Check out the increased website views, hits and follow-through on call-to-action.

Once you go down the path to sustaining a one-postcard-per-day average you will see all your marketing analysis numbers move higher on your business scale. Do this religiously and you have the makings of a highly successful and profitable habit for the rest of your video business career.

This vid goes out to all my fellow pro's and to you Intermediates, Ammy's and straight out of the box newbies. Here's an excerpt from the documentary on Screenwriter Harlan Ellison and his rather pointed perspective on writer's being paid for their services. This razor sharp wisdom applies to still, video, film shooters, sound designers, graphics people and so on. His language gets salty at points so be advised.

Heh, well, there is a story - I'm in talks right now to shoot an identity theft awareness video for a large bank. I suggested we shoot the video in the white-field "mac vs pc" style. I was honest with them, told them I had never done it before, but I was sure that I could. They like the idea, but had skepticism that I could do it. So I set this shoot up just to prove to myself, and to them that I could. Once I had it set up, I figured I might as well take the opportunity to create a video profile for myself and my business. This is what I ended up with. Thoughts? I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

Professionals have a huge force behind them with video becoming such an important part of businesses' advertising strategies; however, opportunities galore will be missed if the need for a professionally made video is not well promoted. Virtually everyone can produce a video; however, only a few amateurs will produce a video that promotes their business as good as they really want.

It is easy to show the difference in professional quality. This quality, coupled with pointing out all of the websites that now hosts business videos and how businesses need to have their videos there can help you make a lot more profit.

Businesses want a great video and besides the few exceptions, a true professional is needed.

Build up your portfolio showing your customers and prospects the difference in quality and all of the websites they need to advertise their videos to help them make more profit too.

I already have a Domain name and an email address for my Business, but that is it. I don't want to throw down thousands of Dollars for a Customized Website that a Website Designer has Designed just for me and manage it. What I am looking for, is a Website Template that a lot of us Video Business Owners have used for our websites. I would like to embed video from vimeo or other video sites. I want to write all the content of the website. I don't think I want to use Flash on my site, because I just talked to this Expert on Websites and she said that if you use flash on your website it will bury you in the Search Engine Optimization, since those search engines are looking for code and the code is buried in those sites that use Flash. Â Getting back to the subject, I am looking to have a site that is clean, not cluttered, and runs smoothly. I would like to put down the Basic Information pages, like contact, pricing, about the company, payment, yada, yada, yada.... So your Suggestions would be Great and Thank you for your time and Help!

I'm about to start a small video business. I know times are hard but if I can make it happen now... I have been offered some corporate work shooting sporting days at a kart race track. As I am new to this as a business could I ask for suggestions regarding the following? I realise quality is an issue, but I am concerned over the massive size of HD files compared to SD. I will be giving my work out on DVD therefore is HD neccessary? I am a big fan of HD, but will the added investment of HD cameras (I'm thinking three Canon HV30's) and probably a serious upgrade to my current PC be worth it? I know HV30's can shoot standard def so they could still be an option with room to go HD later. Another question is regarding mixing SD and HD. If I shoot trackside with HD and say use a helmet cam on one of the drivers in SD, will the difference be acceptable on the final edit? Likewise if due to cost I used an SD/HD mix trackside, how would that look? Finally, I'm trying to cost out the business for my business plan and although I will be at the track for say 2-3 hours, I don't know how long the whole job will take with editing, rendering etc so I'm struggling to come up with an hourly rate! The actual race that I will be shooting will only last about 13 minutes and I will probably have four cameras covering this. Sorry if these are dumb questions!

Hello,

I am interested in starting a small buisness with video. I would like to offer an editing only service where people would send me there raw footage and i would do some simple editing on their video. This would be charged at a small price. I was wondering what would i need? Would i need any permission and would it work. I would also like to know how much to charge?

My Short Slideshow career over a few years was hobby and for extra cash. I did many shows for family and friends as well as a couple of dozen clients and small business.

Being in a industry now I do not have the time to do shows or nor do I wish to keep up my website hosting and domain name. I am looking to sell the entire website, content including logo, tagline, copy, photos etc.. for a fair price to someone who is trying to start or fasttrack a business idea for some extra money.

I started out with and used Proshow Producer as my development tool for the shows but obviously your own shows can be plugged in along with your contact info etc..The shows on the site are a couple of years old and I did get much better but just never updated the site.

If I am not allowed to post this here please let me know asap and I will remove it. Not sure on board rules. It is a niche market and want to get it to someone who can really use it.

http://www.matchstickvideo.com - mixing music and memories (always loved my tagline)

The Site is targeted for slideshows & Photo Montages
It has a Pagerank of 1
It is 2 years old
I have done some minor Search Engine Optimization on it
It has 32 Links pointing at it
The traffic is about 40-50 visitors per month
With No promotions this year I had 6 inquiries
That resulted in 4 sales 2 I gave to another company in my city because I do not have the time.
Average price of shows about $200
It is hosted with godaddy right now and can be transferred very easily.
All HTML Files can be provided including stock photos
Plug in your own shows
Plug in your own prices
Plug in your own contact info
++ Included in the final sale will be some information regarding Optimizing the site further for your city and how to compete online going forward. I do Search Engine Marketing for a living now and have spent very little time on this site. There is more that can be done and I will include a Top 10 List of SEO ideas for the new site owner free of charge.

Please forward all questions to me.
Please forward me your OFFER and a brief
description of your situation.
Price isn't everything here.
I am glad to get this into someones hands
who will do something with it around their
love for slideshows and allowing for part time income.

Thanks
