I'm probably taking the plunge into an HD camcorder in the near future. However, I'm still using Premiere Pro 2.0 for editing, and upgrading _that_ and my computer system will cost a bit. So I'm wondering about converting AVCHD to DV-AVI so I can edit it (or try to edit it) with my current rig, until I spring for a new one. What are the tradeoffs-- I mean, other than massive files on my hard drive? Is there a loss of color depth? Is DV-AVI limited to certain resolutions, framerates, color scales, etc.?

Hi guys,

First of all, I'm new in the world of video editing. I got myself a copy of Adobe Premiere CS3 and I'm trying to figure out how this stuff works. The first thing I'm trying to do is to put several .AVI clips I have together in another .AVI file, so after dragging the clips to the time bar in the bottom, I hit "export" and choose to save it in AVI format. The thing is that this operation takes almost two hours! The final clip is only 18 minutes long. Shouldn't it take much shorter, given that the only thing I'm doing is joining seven AVI clips into one?

Thanks guys.

I'm having a problem which may or may not have been plaguing my small studio since day one. Every video that we edit in Final Cut Pro exports in MUCH lower quality than it was when it was imported, not only that, the file size of the newly exported video is several times the size of the original. What I end up getting is a file too large for our clients to email around. We recently had a client come into our studio with a flash drive full of 15 second avi's no larger than 900 KB, he wanted a few of them edited together with simple cross fade transitions, and even a few seconds of dead space cut out. He needed them to be the highest quality possible for a powerpoint presentation he may now be unable to give. At first I exported them as Uncompressed avi's, best quality, thousands of colors, and no sound. The resulting file was not only blurrier, but now 260.5 MB!! And that one was with zero edits! The original was 803 KB and crystal clear. So after that I decided to try a few tests. We also produce a bi-weekly hour-long local television show, which looks fine on television but now I'm wondering how much better it could and should look. I've been exporting that out as a Quicktime, Apple ProRes 442 HQ, Interlaced bottom-field-first, zero filters, both compressor native and NTSC 720 X 480. I attempted this method on the client's original 803 KB with zero edits and not only did it export a completely unusable video compared to the original, but it was now 57.1 MB. What is going on here? Is Final Cut conspiring against me?

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/87/screenshotofavis.png/

This was after I created a new project, made the sequence settings into Apple ProRes lt 30p under the audio/video settings in Final Cut, and exported it as the same with 'current' dimensions (it was listed as 850X637, maybe that was the original?) Although I did have to render the original avi itself once it was placed in the timeline which you shouldn't have to do if the setting is the same as the clip. I guess there's no way to know exactly what sort of avi my original file is so I can match my sequence to it? The 'more info' (to be fair im sort of used to 'properties') leaves something to be desired..

Thanks everyone.

I have a friend with a Core2Duo 2.26. He wants to get an AVCHD camera (Canon HF200). I think he uses Premiere.

If he converts the AVCHD files to .avi, can he edit this in Premiere with a Core2Duo at 2.26GHz? Or does he still need a CoreDuo Quad, in order to avoid stuttering during playback?

Thanks.

I am looking to put any video that goes on my website in the SWF format? It seems like I've been able to do it in Vegas before, but now that my computer's crashed and I had to re-install, I cannot save in the SWF or FLV format. I just want something handy where the user does not have to install software (or wait through long buffers).

Is there anything free that will convert DV-AVI to SWF? (p.s. I'd like it to add controls which their display can be turned off).

Hello,

I am new here and have a few questions.

1. What is the best video converter to buy - particularly for DVR-MS to AVI? I have downloaded several trials and have trouble really evaluating clearly what they are like. Avs is one in question. I do not mind paying $30 or so for a program (it is really hard to even find how much AVS charge for it!) but I want to make sure there is not going to be some limitation down the track.

2. I imported several HDV/DV tapes (which are now deleted) from my Sony FX1000 straight to my computer as DVR-MS files, before I got a trial version of Premiere, which imports it straight to AVI. As I need AVI to edit in, is it possible to send my DVR-MS file back from my computer to the FX1000 via the ilink cable so I can import it straight back into Premiere as an AVI file? It seems to say in the manual that this can be done but I cannot get it to work.

3. In my full trial version (1.3 gb) of Premiere, in the timeline section at the bottom, I seem to have lost the headings at the side where it says 'video 1', 'video 2' etc. And I cannot drag the clip from the source screen into the timeline like I could before. One of the problems I find with Premiere is that I keep losing my settings, yet when I go to 'windows' menu, the 'timeline' is checked as on.

4. Is there an easy way to uninstall DVRMSToolbox without a degree in computer software writing?

thanks for your time, most appreciated,
M.

Have just purchased SDHDC HDMI camcorder from Maplin at £57 off list, purely for home video use. Have also purchased Samsung HD new generation LED TV.

Problem 1, when playing files direct from camera or from a flash stick, TV tells me audio codec not supported.

Problem 2, using a Mac, OSX Leopard operating system, iMovie8 cannot see the camera.

I can copy the AVI files successfully with audio to my Panasonic DVD writer but would prefer to play on TV direct from SD card or flash. I need to convert the AVI files with advanced audio coding into something the TV can use and these are listed as:

Divx 3.11, Divx 4.x, Divx 5.1, Divx 6, XviD, H264 BP, H.264 MP, H.264 HP, MPEG-4 SP, MPEG-4 ASP Motion JPEG and with any of these the TV audio will play MP3, AC3, LPCM, ADPCM (MULAW ALAW) !

I have tried 3ivx Divx Doctor 2 but it told me I needed to purchase more sophisticated software, which I do not want to do unless I can be sure it will work. And I do not want to purchase iMovie9 unless I can be sure it will work and save in the format required after editing.

It may read like I know what I am talking about but I assure you I don't. All these file names are (as a retired, non computer savvy bloke) just gobbledegook to me.

Can anybody help please - talk slowly.....

So I got an old copy of CS2 from a friend who has CS4 now, and I'm having a problem importing clips. I've seen plenty of topics on the web about issues with mpeg files or ac3 audio, but none about this problem:

If the video I import is .wmv (i.e. wma audio), I have no problems. However, I want to use some .avi files I have. The avi files use xvid/mp3 for the video and audio. When I import them into premier, they import as 'video' (video stream only) instead of 'movie' (video AND audio stream). Like I said, wmv files have no problem (import as 'movie'). When I check the properties for the avi files inside premier, it shows that they have a video track and an audio track, but premier seems to ignore it. Importing an mp3 file works fine, too, so it's not the codec or anything (I have CCCP installed). Now obviously I could convert the files to wmv and I'd have no problems, but I don't see a reason to do so since I personally prefer xvid-avi and I don't really want to have two copies of the same file (I have the avi files archived for my use).

Does premier 2 not support mp3 audio streams in video clips, or is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong or...?

System: Windows 7 64-bit beta1, 2GB RAM, core2 duo E4500 (2.2GHz), geforce 8800GTS 320MB, ONLY Premier Pro 2.0 and After Effects were installed from CS2.

I use a MiniDV tapes in a Panasonic PV-GS320 in 60 minute mode. I bought the camera to catch vacation and family memories, knowing that my old computer at home would not be able to edit them or make disks. Now a year later, I have a Dell Studio Hybrid 140g with Vista Home Premium and the included Windows Movie Maker.

I have read many posts on the subject of the "best format" to select for storage, editing, etc. One member recommended keeping all video on the MiniDV tapes. One suggests .avi is the best. Another counters that by saying it depends on the bit rate and compression ratio. Yet another member takes the time to describe the differences between intra-frame compression and inter-frame compression. It has all been good reading and I am plenty willing to do more reading. But I would like a little direction.

My software imports the video from the camcorder as .avi. Then when burning the DVD, I noticed the disk is full of .vob files. I copied them back to the desktop and noticed they are not as useful as the tape or the .avi for editing. Yet .avi files are huge, approximately 1GB per 5 minutes of run time. That would require a whole different storage solution than my C: drive.

I look forward to the posts that this may receive. Especially any post that link to other good reading. While waiting, I will read from http://www.video101course.com and http://www.filmhelp.com, both recommended reading in other posts.

Hi,

I am working with a client who broadcasts footage in .dv format... Apparently this is what their playout system works with.

At the moment, due to file transfer time deadlines and size limits, I am sending my files as mpeg... avi takes ages to send thru FTP.

The files are 15-20 minute long and for actual TV broadcast...

However, they then need to convert it into their .dv format to be able to play it out...

Now:

1- I know I'm losing quality when I export as mpeg, but is there any further loss when they convert into .dv?

2- Does Premiere Pro CS3 support .dv? Is there any way that I can export the project as a .dv file within Premiere Pro to avoid any further quality loss?

3- Also, any other suggestions to export the footage with a better qualkity is more than welcome.

Here are the export settings I use for Adobe Media Encoder:

FORMAT: MPEG2
TV STANDARD: PAL
FRAME SIZE: 720x576
FRAME RATE: 25
FIELD ORDER: NON PROGRESSIVE
PIXEL ASPECT RATIO: 16:9 (1.422)
PROFILE: MAIN
LEVEL: MAIN
BITRATE ENCODING: CBR 8Mbps
GOP SETTINGS: M FRAMES 3 - N FRAMES 12

Thanks for all the thoughts...

First time opportunity to use newly purchased Premiere Elements 7.0;had been using online services and/or MS Movie Maker neither of which I had issues with imported .avi files being excessively jerky on playback within the application.Â

Image: 320x240; Bit Rate: 64kbps; Audio Format: MPEG Layer-3; Frame Rate: 30FPS; Data Rate: 5080kbps

I've tried what adjustments I could find in the application, but to no avail.  Since this was a relatively easy thing in the other applications I used am I just missing setting a particular configuration or other parameter?

I have runthis by another website and all they were able to tell me it's something to do with my codecs. I have used 'GSpot' and it says I have all the necessary codecs needed for the video. One user I have met on an other site also mentioned that it maybe to do with the order I had the codecs, program, etc installed. Needless to say, all of may efforts have failed...miseralby and I am hoping strongly that you guys will be able to help me. Thanks in advance! ^^

I have APP and I'd like to know what files I can put into it. I'm totally new at video editing and I have some AVI files to edit as well. I tried, but it doesn't work in APPÂ (no preview). Do I need to get some video converter, say AVI-MPEG?. Does Premiere Pro support only mpegs?
Thanks
