Looking for
a camcorder and really need some help. My old Canon XM2 (GL2) is just not doing
the job anymore, and I am tired of tapes and standard res. Not to mention it's
starting to look antique, so it's not really giving me that professional confidence
boost when I pull it out.

What I am
looking for is something like this:

- Full HD
avchd

- Midsize
with handle. Need a pro look for my business so a small one, won't do the job.

- Record to
SD card and/or internal memory (flash or HD)

- Decent
wide angle (or a cam to which a good wide-adapter can be bought at a reasonable
price)

- Decent
battery time.

- Heavy
enough for steady handling, light enough to be able to shoot using the handle
for some time.

- Good low
light quality as I will be shooting lots inside and not always with optimal
light.

- Generally
speaking, image quality more important than audio quality.

- Maximum
price: Around 4,500 USD / 2.800 GBP

These are
the cams I have been looking at:

- Sony
HXR-NX70E

- Canon
XF100

- Panasonic
AG-HMC40/41

- Sony
NEX-VG2OEH

The Sony
HXR-NX70 gets great lowlight reviews, but it's expensive and I don't know if I
would be paying for lots of stuff I will never need (like the jungle-thing,
waterproof, dustproof etc)

The Canon
XF100 also at the very top of my budget, but seems like an overall great
camera.

The
Panasonic is affordable and I think would certainly do the job had I always a
perfect light set-up, but I am worried that the lense is small and that it does
a bad job in less than great light. I am tempted by an offer right now of 2040
GBP for the camera + XLR-adapter + iPad.

The Sony
NEX-VG2, i Just saw this, looks different and interesting, but can't compare
the lense really, so am fairly clueless.

Any cams I
have left out?

And which of these would you suggest and why?

(Note: Could not find a general camcorder forum, only brand specific ones. Please feel free to move this thread to any correct forum I might have missed.)

Just bought a Sony Z5, even though the NX5 has just come out. For me, the need to record to tape is still important for my work. Anyway, my question is to anybody who knows, is the NX5 anything more than a slightly modified Z5?

Hi all. In the last months I been wondering whether is about time to
quit HDV in favour of more modern technology.  I am very pleased with
HDV results it is the ideal format for what I do (mainly so-called
"industrial video" and live events), but it is cleat that HDV is a fading away format and in a couple of years I believe HDV
equiptment will significantly lost its value, and now I can make the
swich with much less investment.

I have the crossover "little pro" SONY A1 (which is a very good consumer
camcorder HC1 with professional upgrades like XLR), and seeing the AX10
it is just the same (the very good consumer Canon Vixia HF G10 with pro
upgrade) I thought it may the the natural replacement.
SONY has launch its HXR-MC50 as an equivalent for the A1, but it lacks XLR inputs, which are a must for me (and for any prosumer camcorder I believe).

Reviews of the AX10 are all very good.

Note: in the past I always thought that if Canon should have done a pro
based on HV-30 what Sony did with the A1 it would have been a real hit.
Now it seems it has done it but in AVCHD world instead of HDV.

I love the A1 quality with good light (cannot differenciate from its
major sister SONY Z1). The size many times is more an advantage rather
than a disadvantage. Despite not being the best for tripod, for eg., it
allow me to shoot with prosumer quality  in places where I should raise
questionning with something with "real pro look" like the Z1. I hate the
lack of manual gain and iris control with the A1, and I don't like too
much the lot of noise the A1 has in low light. The lack of phisicall
buttons for other manual adjustements is something I can live with.

Do you believe AVCHD at 24 Mps equals HDV quality?  Do you believe AVCHD is the natural replacement for HDV? Some people
says that probable a future low cost XDCAM EX format will be the
substitute for HDV, and AVCHD will be just a consumer format.

Seeing that Canon has create a pro version of the Vixia HF G10, it is
reasonable to believe that a new model is not going to be launched in
the near future (pro stuff usually has much longer product lifetime that
consumer's). Is this right?

Hello, Any Vegas expert out there that can help me out. All I want is to burn my edited (simple title, transition) AVCHD files to a regular DVD disc and keep the 1920x1080 resolution.

I've been pulling my hair tying to figure this out. DVD Architect doesn't seem to support HD resolution, as it always wants to resample my video to DVD resolution. The closest thing I came to a solution is to click "make movie" >"Burn it to a DVD, Blu-ray disc, or CD. > "Blu-ray disc". I tried both video format, and the program was able to burn without errors. While I can play the DVD on my PC (stutter and all), my PS3 doesn't seem to see it as a "movie" disc, but instead a DATA disc.

That said, it wont play the disc automatically. I can go through the folder, and into to the "Stream" folder. I can click the file there, and it will play, but that doesn't seem right. Oh, and there are only two choice for burn speed (1.0x, and 2.0x) instead of the actual 24.0x speed. Anyway, please advise. I was using pinnacle studio 12 prior to Vegas, and I believe Pinnacle can burn full HD content on a regular DVD without a problem. If only Pinnacle can handle AVCHD files without begging for mercy (even on my Quad system).

I'm really liking Vegas, and will probably switch, but I'm getting frustrated about this particular issue. I'm pretty sure there's a away (short of getting the PRO version, which I really don't need), someone just need to point me in the right direction.

Thank you in advance.

 FYI:

Leapin' Lizards! I just did some speed tests of renders - Results are
posted below, but I will not waste time fully upgrading to Pro 11.

The advertised speed upgrades from Pro 9 to Pro 10 were fairly
minimal in practice, but they definitely found out how to harness GPU
power in Pro 11.

First I took a fully edited and color corrected (short) wedding
ceremony I did earlier this month. My source files were about 75% HDV
(as 25Mb/s .m2t files from my Z5U) and about 25% AVCHD (as 17Mb/s .MTS
files from my NEX5). My destination file was a 16Mb/s .m2ts (AVCHD)
file I use to compile blu-ray discs with.

Using Vegas Pro 10:

Project Length: 0:21:32 Time to Render from mixed AVCHD and HDV sources: 1:32:27

Using Vegas Pro 11:

Project length: 0:21:32 Time to render from mixed HDV and AVCHD sources: 0:43:31

I would guess that if I had straight cuts and not dissolves this
would be a MUCH faster render as it stutters a bit with every dissolve
transition. In any case it was still over 2x faster to render with
Vegas Pro 11.

   2. Second I did a render from one minute unedited clips.

Source file for clip 1 - AVCHD (as 17Mb/s .MTS file from my NEX5) and destination file was a 16Mb/s .m2ts file (AVCHD)

Using Vegas Pro 10:

Project Length: 0:01:00 Time to Render from AVCHD to AVCHD: 00:03:01

Using Vegas Pro 11:

Project Length: 0:01:00 Time to Render from AVCHD to AVCHD: 00:01:19

    3. Lastly I did another render from one minute clips:

Source file for clip 2 - HDV (as 25Mb/s .M2T file from my Z5U) and destination file was a 16Mb/s .m2ts file (AVCHD)

Using Vegas Pro 10:

Project Length: 0:01:00 Time to Render from HDV to AVCHD: 00:02:55

Using Vegas Pro 11:

Project Length: 0:01:00 Time to Render from HDV to AVCHD: 00:01:17

This is starting to be almost rendering at triple speed in Vegas Pro
11 compared to Pro 10 - in fact it seems that AVCHD is well on the way
to be able to be rendered in close to real time. If I had the newest
graphics cards out there, it just might happen. It was not long ago
that rendering DVD .mepg files took far longer than real time to render,
and do not worry about those in Vegas Pro 11. Vegas Pro 11 will create
your 720x480 MPEGs at 3x-4x real time!

For reference, my graphics card is a nVidia 1GB GTX285 - a dinosaur compared to the newest nVidia cards!

Hello,

I have a Canon Vixia HF S21. When recording I use the settings 60i for the recording mode. I also have a iMac i7 core. The computer is about a couple months old so that eliminates one problem. The only way that I know how to transfer files between my canon and mac is through iMovie. (I only use iMovie for transfere and Final Cut Pro for editing) When I transfer 60i clips from the camera and use iMovie to do the transfer i select ORIGINAL FORMAT. So the clips should be 60i. And when I right click on my clip, located on the harddrive it says in the properties 29.97. Why is that? Does iMovie convert the clips or is there something wrong with my software?

Summary:

How do you guys transfer AVCHD clips from a canon HF S21 to a mac and have them in 60i, just as they were recorderd on the camera?

Thank You in advance!!!

Hi there, new to this forum, hopefully in the future I will be able to help others!

Anyways, I bought a HXR-MC2000E which I intend to use for wedding videos, but on editing with iMovie, I have noticed the .MOV file which iMovie turns the AVCHD into, looks very choppy, which in turn comes out in the final DVD. The cam is recording in 50i which after my research seems to be 25fps. Is this the issue, or am I doing something wrong, or is the camera operating and working as it should?

I would love the video to be smooth after editing, but am I asking too much?

I'm probably taking the plunge into an HD camcorder in the near future. However, I'm still using Premiere Pro 2.0 for editing, and upgrading _that_ and my computer system will cost a bit. So I'm wondering about converting AVCHD to DV-AVI so I can edit it (or try to edit it) with my current rig, until I spring for a new one. What are the tradeoffs-- I mean, other than massive files on my hard drive? Is there a loss of color depth? Is DV-AVI limited to certain resolutions, framerates, color scales, etc.?

Hi there,

Sorry to bother you all but I was wondering if anybody could help me with a couple of queries!

I have a Canon HG10 which is wonderful little camcorder which I'm told shoots in AVCHD. Now, I always thought it filmed .mov because that's what it comes up as when I upload the footage on to imovie.

I was recently helping my mother choose a camcorder and did some research as she doesn't have a Mac but a PC so I was looking for compatibility issues etc. Anyway I've found a lot of people saying that imovie'11 doesn't have support AVCHD and also found out that that is supposedly what my Canon HG10 films in.

So my question in why does my Canon work fine (and come up as .mov files) when working with imovie...yet everybody says AVCHD doesn't work with imovie?

And my second question, I may be looking to upgrade my camcorder to a mid-level Canon XA10 HD 'pro' camera, which also films in AVCHD. But I don't want to buy it and find that it won't work with imovie or other Mac editing software. (I'm learning Express and Pro but imovie is just sooooo much easier to use!).

So is there anyway I can find out once and for all, whether it will work on a Mac?

(And as a little aside: if there are so many problems with AVCHD compatibility and editing, why do so many of the camcorders these days use it?!)

Thank you in advance for your help

I am at witts end here.  Posting this now because I just cant find the solution after hours searching.

I want to burn my AVCHD files (Canon HFS10) to a DVD to watch on a Blu ray player.  I dont have a BD burner.  I understand this can be done, but am looking for the most simple method or software to do this.  Is there there a single program that can do this?  I tried IMGburn without luck.  I have found exactly this for Mac,  http://www.shedworx.com/revolverhdmac , but I have a PC,  and Shedworx is not planning to release a PC version.  Any simple, one stop solution like this for PC?  Thanks in advance for any input.

I'm trying to decide on what type of professional camcorder to buy to expand my home based video editing business. Having used low end Canon's in the past, i'm partial to them. The new Canon XA 10 looks enticing but as I work with Final Cut Pro, which does not support the XA 10's AVCHD format, I have reservations. I may go with the XF 100 instead. Has anybody heard if the new redesigned Final Cut Pro X supposedly coming out this summer will support AVCHD files? I will be using the camcorder to film interviews for personal biographies, sports video for montages, and promotional videos for businesses and non profits. Any suggestions or recommendations on a Canon, Panasonic, or Sony camcorder between $2,000 and $3,000 that is compatible with FCP?

Thanks in advance

Hi, I'm Tyler. Im going to college for video production soon. I'm debating what camcorder to get. I really like the Panasonic AG-HMC40 because of all the reviews i read about it were good. It's a great deal at only 2000 dollars too. I was also looking at the JVC GZ HD7U, but i dont like the .tod format. I have a macbook pro and i use final cut express. I just want an advanced camcorder that is not to complicated and will last me through college. Is the Panasonic AG-HMC40 a generally good camcorder? I really like it but i need to know if ifs a good camcorder. Thank you

Orpheus on "Canon 7D or videocamera? HD or SD? AVCHD Editing problems? Worth it? Opinions?!"

**If you have an opinion on anything I discuss, please post below because every "vote" counts in my decisions going forward.**

My Goal: To shoot small / short film projects to upload to the internet and burn to DVD. (I would also like to do some still photography on the side, whether it is with the camera I buy or a separate still camera---this is factoring into my decision somewhat, but I want to focus on video.)

Note: I have Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 (the production package with after effects, etc..)

Do I buy a 7D? Price vs performance seems tempting, but many people have problems editing AVCHD and I don't have CS5 with the Mercury Playback Engine. (I am buying a new computer soon, which I will make sure has the capability to edit HD, but is that worth it since I plan to output to DVD and the internet?) All of the codecs and conversions don't seem worth the effort depending on where my footage is going to end up...should I stick with Standard Definition? (The videocamera I have now is standard definition: Panasonic DVX100)

I would like creative options, and being able to change lenses seems like more creative options. Also, my projects will mostly be small indie-film-like projects, so I won't really be doing live events.

The downside to 7D is that there are many accessories that will add up if I want to use it primarily for video? Would I be better off putting that money into a videocamera from the start?

I can always buy a separate still camera that takes great pictures to have alongside a videocamera.

OR

That brings us to my second option: Do I buy an HD videocamera? After I get my new computer, I would love to have great looking footage, but since I am only going to be outputting it to DVD in the end, does HD matter? How much better does it look than SD on DVD? People want video on the internet to load really fast these days, and if I shoot HD and upload HD, sure they have the HD option, but I would guess the majority just watch it Low Resolution anyways.

So, that brings us to the big finale: What to do? The Panasonic AG-AF100 is 5,000 dollars and out of my budget. The 7D is within reach, but has lots of drawbacks. An HD prosumer videocamera might take a bit more time to save up for, BUT is it the right way to go if I want to focus on video? Then again, I can take still photographs anytime to practice photography, with some video projects on the side when friends are available to help.

**Please feel free to join in with your opinion on what you would do in this situation, and explain WHY? What things would make you lean towards one option over the other?

Thank you for your opinion!

<p class="post">

When I drop my AVCHD .mts clips from my Canon HF10
camera into Sony Vegas Platinum
(consumer version), and then use the make DVD wizard, it renders and
then sends my media files to DVD architect 4.5 and then burns my DVD to
look spectacular.  This is fantastic because my project I'm working on
is going on
4.7GB DVDs for commercial DVD players or computers. I simply shot in HD
because I wanted the option in the future to burn to Blu-ray, but won't
be doing that as of yet.

I don't want to use Sony Vegas Platinum though....I want more
advanced options and more options later for BluRay, etc etc etc and thus
need to edit, render, send the edited/rendered files to DVD architect
pro 5.0, and then burn to DVD using Sony Vegas Pro, not Platinum.

Sony Vegas Pro does not have this streamlined "make DVD" option like
the nice consumer version does.
After editing in Vegas Pro, I have to manually render my project using
the plethora
of options available, which honestly, I don't know much about. I've
tried rendering using NTSC widescreen for DVD architect (MPEG-2), I've
tried HDV with high settings, etc etc etc and when I drop these rendered
files into DVD Architect, they don't turn out well quality-wise like
they did in Sony Vegas Platinum using the automatic make DVD settings.Â
I
simply want to render these edited .mts files to a format that DVD
architect will like and then burn in high quality so my DVDs look good
on any DVD player with a standard monitor or HD monitor.  Vegas
Platinum
does a great job, but it's unknown to me what it is doing behind the
scenes to render my files before it sends them off to DVD architect.
Obviously it works great given my test with Vegas Platinum and native
.mts files, but I have no idea what Vegas Platinum is doing to convert
or render these editing .mts files to make them still high quality and
smooth for DVD architect.  I just need to know how to replicate this
process manually in Vegas Pro and I'm set.

So to recap, and in a nutshell, I need to know what render settings
to choose in Vegas Pro after editing my .mts files natively so I can
then send them over to DVD architect pro 5.0 and burn my project to a
DVD without loss of visual quality.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I have 20 DVDs worth of unedited .MTS files from a Canon Vixia HD prosumer camera.

I need to edit these using Sony Vegas, which supposedly supports .mts. Within Vegas however, when I preview my clips on the timeline, the quality is terrible. I get a single frame in the window every 2 or 3 seconds making editing impossible. Apparently this is a common problem with .mts.

How do I go about being able to edit .mts in Vegas? If that's not possible, how do I go about converting the .mts to a file that Vegas will support for smooth editing?

I have an Acer Aspire laptop running 4GBs of DDR3, a Duo 2.26 Ghz processor, 1066 Mhz FSB, 3 MB L2, 320GB harddrive, and my project files are on external 500GB hard drive. I have the 512 MB NVIDEO GeForce 9600M GT in the laptop.

These must be for professional DVD output, so if I convert, I can't lose any visual quality for when I put them on DVD.

Nobody seems to have a definitive answer thus far...you guys are my last hope!!!!

I recently purchased a Panasonic TM700 after reading all the positive reviews.

My question is after recording high definition video that looks great on your computer and also looks great playing directly from you camcorder to your television. Have you beenable to burn a DVD that has that same clean crisp image?

I know that blu-ray would maintainhigher quality. But have you had success burning DVDs that play on standard players withoutgetting soft rather than crisp images?
I edited some clips in Premiere Pro CS4 on my little MAC and exported it out to a quicktime .mov file.
I tried burning one yesterday ... the footage looks good until it is burned to DVDwhen a obvious loss of sharpness is evident. It doesn't look terrible, but it is not near as good as the original footage.

Have you had to deal with this yet? And if so, do you have an answer for it yet?

Any suggestions appreciated.

I originally transferred AVCHD clips from a series of 6 SD cards onto my Mac external Drive using FCP 6 at a local Cable Access Media center, with all the recommended settings- was able to edit fine. Saved my first project, went home and used some of these mts files (all there in various BDMV folders) for various projects in Premiere Elements 7.0- we have MacDrive 8 installed on our pc. All fine.

Went to a friend's house worked on FC Elements with a series of clips for a new, different Final Cut Project- this time only using footage transferred from card #5 at the Center in FCP 6- everything fine so far.

Went back to the media center, opened the original FCP project created at the Center (same same lab- identical machines)- one clip seemed fine so I didn't notice anything wrong at first. Went to add more footage and poof! all clips from most of the cards were grayed out- except the ones I had worked with on FC Elements (card #5). BTW I never opened these or worked with them on my PC, just my friend's Mac.

I suspect that somehow my orig clips were affected by my PC, since that one card is still visible on the Macs- but I don't know what specifically is causing this. Or how to avoid having to convert everything in order to be able to work with this footage on a Mac again. In future I would like to be able to transfer footage once and use the video files on either machine, ideally. Of course all the original cards have since been reformatted.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Which recording format produces the better quality video - AVCHD or MPEG2 long GoP ?

I came accross a statement somewhere that the quality of video shot at 50Mbps MPEG2 long GoP is roughly equal to 24Mbps AVCHD. If this is so, why then is MPEG2 long GoP considered to be broadcast quality but not AVCHD ? For me to have a better understanding of this, will help me to decide on which camcorder to buy - i.e the Sony HXR-NX5 or the Canon XF300 or Sony EX1R.

Any thoughts on this anybody ?

I am using Vegas 8 and dvd architect 5. I shot HD 1920x1080 and edited it in Vegas 8, but my final dvds would sometimes skip and won't play at all in PC dvd drives. I rendered out of vegas as MPEG2 and was careful to watch the bitrates. I imported it into DVD architect 5.0, made my menus, etc. and then burnt them. Now the dvds usually play in regular dvd players, but they are not recognized by ANY computer drive (mac or pc). Nor are they recognized by any small form factor dvd player that uses a PC drive as it's drive. I think I am "rendering as" incorrectly and need to know which settings to use to render as and if I need to modify any settings in DVD Architect. I believe I am using the main concept mpeg2 setting with ntsc widescreen. I seen others who render as main concept DVDA and AC3 seperately. Would that help? Thanks.

I am trying to do the simplest possible thing - create a DVD with a main menu which shows the video I have taken on my Sony camcorder. What the PMB program does (with Create Disc..Create AVCHD format disc) is almost what I want except that it does not allow me to rename the video files - so on the DVD it produces they have non-descriptive names like 2010052211807.m2ts. If I could rename these easily, I would be done. But I can't.

So I have Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum and Architect Studio. It would seem as if I could use Architect Studio to drag the m2ts files from the Explorer somewhere (onto the menu?), rename the menu items as I like and create a simple DVD. But instead, in the Explorer I see a multiplicity of files with the extensions .m2ts.modd, .m2ts.moff, .m2ts.sfk and .m2ts and Architect Studio doesn't recognize any of them.

It would be great if someone could describe the process for producing an AVCHD DVD like PMB does except where I can specify the names of the clips in the main DVD menu. Thanks for any help.

Hi, could someone out there kindly give me advice. Â

I have a Canon HF10 camera, am new in the business and want to know what is the best editing software.  I have made two movies with Adobe Premiere Elements 8 but is dissapointed with the amount of "crashing" and wonder if there is something better.  From what I have read on this forum is that retaining the same format whilst editing, is important if you do not want to loose quality.   This would be importants to me.   My file format is AVCHD.  I copied my computer's specs below. I do not mind to spend money on editing and upgrading my software if necessary.  (within limits of say 1000 euro)

What is the best software for not loosing quality and enabling videos in HD or Blue ray?

Does rendering reduce quality and if so, what should I do to avoid the loss in quality?

Hello everyone. I need some help here I need some help on deciding which direction to go for editing AVCHD and distributing in DVD and Blue-ray. Here is a little background. I first started editing with Pinnacle liquid which is now Avid liquid 7 which was ok no problems. Then I purchased a Mac Pro G5 and purchased Final Cut Studio because I only had to pay two hundred fifty dollars for it, which was great and I was helping a friend with weddings which he was also using FCP. Now here is the problem I am about to purchase AVCHD camera and begin editing in HD and I still want to have the option to mix SD and HD on the same time line and distribute in DVD or Blu-ray to relatives and friends. I have download Sony Vegas demo and Adobe premiere Pro production premium demo no issues learning either one. This were need your folks help here, remember this just for family and friends and some event shoots like Air shows kids football baseball games little league and high school special events etc. I am my family’s video producer. I get called all the time. Here are my options.

Purchase a new Intel base Mac pro and upgrade to FCP Studio 3. But how is for authoring Blu-ray on what else I need to purchase for authoring Blu-ray? Plus over twenty two hundred dollars just for a new Mac.

No problem with that, I have done it many times before and purchase Adobe production premium. To build a new PC about fifteen hundred not including software. I like the idea that I will get Adobe Photoshop and After Effects with the set?

3. Build a new PC. Purchase Sony Vegas but what add-ons do I need for it?

I'm about to purchase the Panasonic AG-HMC150. The only problem I see is that many editing programs don't support the AVCHD and AVCCAM technology. Right now I use Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0. Can I use this program to edit AVCHD? If not what editing program would be a good program in general and one that would also support this technology?Â
