I've been out of video production for 15 years and am getting ready to jump back in with an HD camcorder purchase, but one of my absolute "must haves" is the ability to feed the camcorder with the "line out" of an audio mixing board for some studio work. What is not clear to me is if the microphone input jack (such as on a Canon HF20) is compatible with the normal line levels from an audio device, or will it only work with microphones?

Hello,

Thanks for your time.

I need to delete right channel audio and then copy my left channel to both channels so I have stereo. How do I do this in Sony Vegas Pro 11 please?

Are there any advantages of making the changes in Sound Forge?

So really bizarro. My clip is about 6-7 minutes long shot on a 5dmk II with a mke 400 sennheiser shotgun mic. In the .mov file when played on my mac the audio is fine and complete. When I import it into CS 5.5 premiere when you play the file in either the source window or the sequence it strangely about 2 minutes in plays the audio from the beginning, looping it. The video isn't looping. It happens right after the other camera I had timed out and made a shutter noise, but that's it. Has anyone ever had something like this happen? Any suggestions on what to do??? This is driving me nuts. I restarted the program and restarted the computer, still same issue.

I got an email from youtube that I now get a share of adsense revenue there. But my podcasts are audio only. Which quick but at the same time eye-candy ways to create a video around audio can you come up with?

Quick survey.... When you import audio into a video project, what format(s) do you prefer?

Typical project: eg. wedding video, corporate presentation, etc.
Audio content: eg. music, voice, sound FX, etc.
File type: eg. WAV / AIF / MP3, etc.
Sample rate: eg. 44.1khz, 48khz, etc.
Channels: eg. Mono / Stereo / Surround, etc.
Resolution: eg. 8-bit, 16-bit, etc.

Obviously, this varies hugely from project to project. So, consider the question for the most regular type of video work you do - a 'typical' project.

So I'm using Audacity for audio fixing. Ã??Ã? I use a directional canon DM-100 mic. Ã??Ã? The sound is great, picks my voice up very clearly. Ã??Ã? My only problem is, I dont have a sound studio, and where I film is no carpet, all walls...etc, so the sound is bouncing around a lot. Ã??Ã? Basically, I sum it up as "I sound like im in a bathroom" style.Ã??Ã?Â

here is an audio clip of myself in the location I film, I took out the background noise, pay attention to my voice, as you can hear what im talking about.

http://marklive.tv/marklivesstuff/pics/sound_test.mp3

What do i need to do in order to get rid of that style of audio where I sound like im in a bathroom?? I want to sound more 'full' i guess you can say...lol.

I dont mind learning how to do it in Vegas Pro either, cause I know it says its great for that, so whats your thoughts on fixing this type of noise?

The place is actually the kitchen is where I shoot, and No i wont buy a lapel mic, the directional mic i have will work, I just know there is a way to clean it up

Hello!

I have an MP4 video I made, the output audio volume of which I need to increase so that the video's audio volume will not be so darned low on You Tube.

How would I increase the audio output of that MP4 file?

Thanks!

Matt

PS: I, like many, work with other video formats as well, and I'd like to be able to do the same, as above, with other formats as well. Thanks again!

I shot with a DSLR and I have been looking into getting an xlr adapter box such as the one made by Beachtek so I can use xlr mics. After thinking, I was wonder what the difference would be if I just bought an xlr to 1/8 (1/8 goes into my dslr) cable as long as my mic is powered? Thats $10 vs $300...am I missing something here?

I run a low budget wedding video business, and usually i rely on either a tape out of the church's mixer onto a cd or my built in mics to create a decent sound. What kind of mics under $100 could I buy to put on either one of my 2-camera wedding ceremony setup. Is stereo good to have?

Greetings all!

New to the forum, i have been lurking for a couple of weeks and it seems like this group has a bunch of great talent and a great community! So for my first post I thought I would start with something that I am struggling with, I am a photographer that is adding video services for my commercial clients it seems like the two mediums have alot of natural synergy.

My wife and I own a higher end hair salon, day spa and photography studio all in one facility and I am looking to use video heavily on the marketing side to show clients what can be done and how it can enhance your social media marketing. So I am learning the in's and out's of producing truly professional video, so one of the things that I want to do is record interviews of all of out service providers in a fun way, The name of the business is The Studio and I am doing a series of "Inside the Studio" where we interview each person so that prospective clients can get to know the stylist and spa service providers a little more personally.

I want to do this as a two camera interview with one camera capturing the wider shot of both and the second camera close up on the subject giving the answers.

My current kit is comprised of a Canon HF30 and a Canon XA-10, I have an Audio Technica AT-875 shotgun mic, a sony wireless lav and handheld system and an Audio Tech 2050 for doing voice overs.

The basic setup is is the HF30 doing the wide shot with no sound recording, the XA-10 has the AT shotgun boomed between the two subjects and is recording the interviewee in a close up shot.

The XA-10 has XLR inputs and records great sound, my levels are good and the sound is great. The problem I am having is in the post process and combining the two different video shots and one audio and getting everything synced up.

So my first question, is there a better way to record the audio to make post easier, would it be better to record audio on an external device rather than in camera?

Should I be capturing the audio on both cameras simply for the purposes of syncing the two video streams and then just use the audio from the XA-10.

Or am I just all wrong and there is a much better way to capture the audio?

I am using Final Cut Pro X as my NLE and I know that currently there is no multi cam support. I have been searching the forums and haven't found an answer but I do apologize if this process has been explained before and I missed it.

Thanks,

Hello,

I'm shooting a road trip documentary that relies heavily on dialogue/interaction between the two people in the car. I have wired lavaliers attached to Zoom H2 recorders for each person, as well as a Rode VideoMic Pro that will be on the dash, attached to my A-camera. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions that might help reduce road noise in the moving car? Maybe settings in the H2 or mic placement? Would the H2s record better audio than my inexpensive Audio Technica lavaliers? I have little audio experience so any help is appreciated!!

Thanks in advance,

I have a problem. I am starting on my shooting videos for weddings and because of my small budget i am using a olympus ws-300m digital voice recorder. So can add more audio quality to my videos. i am also using the camera mic (panasonic agdvx100b), but when i upload my audio file to my time line (FCP) and sync the audio whit the video file the first minutes are ok but after that i can ear the audio unsync this is the audio file upload from the digital voice recorder.

Can someone give advice

Hiya, I've recently completed training in film score techniques and looking for some experience and to put a portfolio together. I've a lot of experience with composing and music production and can be very versatile with style. I've put a little site together here http://neonmonkeystudios.com where you can hear some examples of my stuff. Please contact me at russwook@hotmail.com or through the site if your interested.

Also I've released an instrumental album under the name Bang Ce Soir which you can use for free for any project you have, the music varies from being quite intense to very chilled and might give a good insight into some other flavours I can cover too, just download them here at http://snd.sc/mzU69n but please give me a credit on the film and let me have access to a copy when it's finished.

My question is this: are the songs played by a DJ service at a wedding usable in my wedding videos without violating the legal "rights" issue? I heard that if I use less than 30 seconds of the song, than there is no violation -- any comment on this?

I have recently installed the Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, upgrading from CS4, and I am having some annoying issues with the audio. I always use HDV footage.

The problem is that when I import the footage, sometimes (and the problem is that is the issue is ramdom!):

- some parts of the video imported are muted. For eg., if a sequence is 3 minutes, maybe at minute 2 it becomes muted.

- sometimes, the audio is not synch with the video, although it has the same time lenght.

Surprisingly, the raw capture failes from the camera are OK. Good sound always.

Now I have to import the raw in Movie Maker (Yes!), export the sound only and import the sound in CS5, but this is nonsense!

Any ideas???

I've just been watching some professional documentaries, and wondering how they are doing sound for interviews, particularly when there are conversations going on. Once in a while I thought I saw a lavalier mike clipped to someone's shirt, but more often not. Shotgun? Maybe. But what happens when you have, say, people sitting around a table, or a family in their living room talking to each other? Six shotgun mikes? And does a shotgun really give you the quality I've been hearing? Case in point: "45365."

Actually Im thinking avout using a rode mic monted in the camera and I need something to be recording the groom and bride at the altar. What I can use to capture a good audio quality, good presence?

Hello,
We are using a Canon Vixia HV40 HDV video camera and a Sennheiser ew100 G3 System with camera mount receiver attached to the accessory shoe. We are using a right-angle stereo-to-stereo cable to plug the camera mount receiver into the Camera. However, when we plug our headphones into the AV output on the camera, we can only hear the audio in one ear. The AV output settings are changed to headphones, and we checked the audio output channels on the camera to make sure L/R is selected. We also hear the audio out of only one of the speakers when playing back the video on our media player. The Sennheiser unit also comes with a Stereo-to-XLR cable, which we could then try a beachtek adapter to plug the Sennheiser into the adapter, then connect the adapter to the camera, just to see what happens. But would this solve the problem, and even if it does, do we need to add anohter device into the chain? Wouldn't we be able to use the sennheiser as-is, record on one track and split the audio in post using our NLE? What are the pro's and cons? Just trying to learn from the experience of others who have done this before, before we do our own trial-and-error. Thanks!

Here's a really good audio discussion from the 'Terrance and Phillip Show' Podcast. (no southpark relation and no fart jokes) T&P discuss the topic of how the quality level offered by trained film & video professionals is becoming unnecessary because of lower expectations of 'quality' in digital media these days. From film to Mpeg4 and from Vinyl LP's to MP3's and more what is determined as a quality product has changed considerably.

As those who are working pros, Intermediates looking to go pro or Hobbyists or Novices what do you think a 'quality' looking/sounding film or video is and what level of quality would you be willing to produce or buy? Should you make your final product high quality as possible or just get it to where it's good enough? What do you think good enough is? Do you think low quality films and video are ruining the film and video business by just being good enough?

Is Good Enough, good enough?

I own two shotgun mics, an AT-897 and a Rode NTG-2, and I'm having the same problem with each (which makes me think that what I'm experiencing is not a "problem" and is completely normal). Here's the situation: When I have one of the mics connected to a Zoom H4N audio recorder, I have to have the recording levels all the way up (to level 100). With the levels all the way up, I have to be just 6-inches directly in front of the mic to be able to talk in a normal voice volume and register -12db on the Zoom (in an otherwise silent room). If I back up to 3 feet from the front of the mic, speaking in a normal voice volume only gets me to -24db. Now, I know you need to be as close to the mic as possible to obtain the best quality, but I would expect to be able to be at least 3ft away and not have to turn the audio recorder's levels to their max. Because when I bring the -24db to normal levels in post, the amount of noise increases as well.

My question is: are shotgun mics supposed to be like this? Is this an issue with the Zoom H4N? It would seem to me that I should have more wiggle room with the Zoom's recording levels to make the mic much more sensitive.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm new to the world of filming. I found this site and was hoping I can get some advice from users. I have a canon gl2 with the MA-300 XLR adapater. Can I run a shotgun mic on the left channel and a audio technica wireless mic on the right channel. Will I get sound on tape picked up from the shotgun mic and sound from the wireless mic?

Thanks for your feedback on this question to a newbie on the adventure of learning a new hobby of filming.

I've been doing video production gigs here and there, working as a sole proprietor under just my name, and I've been thinking of forming a single-member LLC instead, so that I can take out business loans, have limited liability, etc.

I also produce music (which I'd like to publish online soon), do audiovisual work for events, and design graphics for T-shirts and other items, all as a sole proprietor under my own name.

Is it possible or advisable to form a single LLC that would include all of these services?

Would I be better off forming separate LLCs for my various services?

I got a wedding on saturday for a friend, first one i will ever do, and it might become more of a business than a hobby with the word of mouth going around. When i plan on doing interviews, i want the person to be able to talk into my sm58 for clear and crisp audio. My camcorder (Canon hf m30) has a 1/8" mic input. So questions...

If i get a 1/8" M to xlr F cable, does it matter if the 1/8 is in stereo or mono. I've read people complain of hissing and such.

Is there gonna be an impedence mismatch, i realize the mic is Low-z, but can the camera do Hi and Low z?

Where can i buy this?

Any ideas, thoughts, help would be gratefully accepted. I am bringing in the Canon GL2 as a new addition to my work. I have some basic Shure mics and a Mackie 402VLZ3 small mixer. My objective is to be able to travel with my equipment, show up at a location and be up and running to film and audio record. I think the Mackie mixer I have will work but I am asking if there are any mics (small) but that offer good audio recording quality.

Perhaps there are some of you out there who have a good menu of equipment you use that gives you high quality audio reproduction and can be carried around easily. Example: My GL2 in one shoulder and another carry bag for the rest of the equipment.

I welcome emails also at: tai@taicoproductions.com
