With about 90,000 members to Videomaker, I am very curious as to how many of us are still using analog camcorders (VHS, VHS-C, S-VHS-C, 8mm, Hi-8, etc.). I find it hard to believe that all of the Videomaker members are ALL into digital only. I would like to have feedback from some analog members who still enjoy using this format vs digital (or maybe use both). If everyone was shooting digital only, then there would be no market for analog tapes. However, there are many outlets selling lots of analog tapes, including some of the camcorder manufacturers themselves.

Any comments ad feedback, please? Thanks folks.

every product for converting analog (VHS) to a digital format seems to have an output via FireWire to the input of my computer. But as I'm finding out not all PC's have a FireWire port. What now? Is there a USB solution or how else does one get there old home movies onto the computer that is not equiped with FireWire. For now, my friend has to bring his crap over to use my computer where then I have to share so that he can get it onto his computer.

We have just upgraded to Cannon XHA1s cameras; but could not upgrade our analog switcher (Focus MX4) and was wondering about the possibility of catching a signal from the cameras, and sending it to the switcher.

The cameras have BNC outs, as well as RCA.... anyone have ideas?

For years, I have come across the problem of dropping frames when trying to capture video in a good quality from my Hi8 Camcorder. I'm aware that it isn't unusual for that to happen with 8mm/Hi8 capturing, but are there any possible tricks or other free capturing softwares that could help me with this problem? This is by far the most frustrating experience for me when I do my editing. I am currently using Pinnacle Studio 12 ultimate. Thanks.

I am trying to upload my old analog 8mm tapes to my PC using the RCA connections on my TV-in/tuner card. It all seems to be going well, but I find that I am getting some distortion or interference on the uploaded file. As I watch it upload, on the camera the image is fine, but on the computer there is some interference, the best way to describe it is like when the old tv stations on an antenna would go in and out angled lines on the image. What would cause this? Is there any way to get rid of it?

On another note, is there any way to clean up the images, or make them clearer? I can only upload as a WMV (I am using Windows Movie Maker to capture), I would prefer AVI. If I convert to AVI afterwards, will the picture improve? I want to create DVD's for playback on a television screen & am afraid that the image will be all grainy.

Thanks for the help

I just received a nice inexpensive little Grass Valley 110 switcher which will be installed to handle a multi-camera webcast accompanying a radio show. This switcher has a downstream input, so I'm now hunting for something that will give me graphics, lower 3rds etc.

The boys in the front office don't much like the idea of having to go $1k to $3k for a little CG box, and would prefer something that will reflect the "budget" aspect of the overall project and still give me what I need. Has anyone discovered any software solutions that might prove helpful to me, preferably one that can work with a non-pro-level video output card from a common PC?

Thanks for whatever you can suggest.

I have a slowly dying Videonics switcher, and would like to use a spare Vista machine as a switcher/recorder.

I have three cameras fed into the switcher via s-video to tape live events and church services. Audio is run from a mixer board. What I'm thinking of doing is putting three or four PCI tv tuner cards into the PC -- but i'm not sure if one PC can handle that many.

What I'd really like to find is like the Canopus boards we used to have when I worked for Charter Cable. Four inputs on one card, onscreen previews of the video feeds in an easy to use switching program. This was back in the days of Win98 and Pentium II 266Mhz and only 256megs of ram. If that clunker could handle that, surely there's stuff out now that can do it, too.

The Canopus boards are no longer around -- they were old when I got to use them. VidBlaster software is a reasonablepackage to handle multiple sources -- the only issue I'm faced with is getting those analog sources into the computer.

As a newbie, I only still have an analog camera...I would like to shoot fresh video footage to use in practicing with FCP 6.

Would purchasing the Pinnacle Video capture for MAC allow me to convert my analog footage to a useable  format for my IMAC so I could start editing with Final Cut Pro 6?

Does anyone know of a player that will play both regular 8 mm analog and regular digital 8 mm tapes? I need one to move my stock footage to a computer hard drive or just play it. My digital 8 camera allows me to play both formats but I’ve realized when this camcorder fails I won’t be able to play my tapes. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've got about a ten year collection of both kinds of tapes.

I see people advertise converting VHS tapes to DVD. What's the procedure for this other than plugging your Video player into  a DVD recorder. I assume that the professionals use a more hi tech way of doing it?

I just recently purchased the Sony DCR HC 48 Handycam... after scouring Apple's iMovie discussion boards, it appears as though I will NOT be able to transfer VHS footage digitally using this camcorder as a pass through. This is definitely a problem for me, as I was hoping to archive many VHS tapes to mini-dv. The emphasis is to archive to mini-dv as opposed to importing all vhs footage directly into iMovie, which could ultimately tie up my internal hard drive (I would like to go through the tapes and edit them at a later date).

<p class="gmail_quote">

If I buy an analog to digital converter, do you know if I can somehow transfer the vhs to a mini-dv cassette with this approach? Again, I would prefer not to directly copy footage into the computer. What about investing in a vcr/mini-dv unit such as the one linked below? It appears as though they are no longer manufacturing these but, given my situation, and the number of tapes I am hoping to archive (and eventually edit), it may be a wise purchase.
