Couldn't handle it if things got much busier. No relief (?) in sight until the second week in February.

The recession hit us hard two years ago but we've been able to shift focus a bit and are nearly back to where we need to be.

I always strive to get jobs signed and sealed by the first week in December. After that it is a drought until late in January. I always have a few jobs that I do on spec and I keep these for December thru January. It keeps me busy at least and there is the hope of money down the line.

This year seems to be particularly slow, perhaps it is because of the overall economy being so shaky.

fame, sorry about the blank posts, I'm not sure what went wrong when I was posting. As far as your video, I liked it and there was lots of good stuff. I think that it would have more impact if it were tightened up some. If some of the clips were trimmed to make it closer to one minute or so, I think that you would grab the audience and keep them till the end, in my humble opinion. Keep shooting.

Hi all. I'm the media sponsor for our local women's roller dery team in Roanoke, the Star City Roller Girls, and put this little promo together for them the other day. What do you guys think? Hope you like it! Thanks! (It was not pre-planned, but I try to get some after-game shots for little news snippets, which then turned into a promo...)

I know from personally having been in the published advertising industry that two things matter in print advertising: repetition and page dominance. Budgets for sustaining/maintaining either or both call for a lot of money. But as Rob pointed out and I also know for fact, a single ad regardless of size is like putting all your money on 21 or 00 on the roulette wheel.

Visibility and linkage in print advertising is established by repetition and page dominance (full or half page sizes) and color (huge added expense) is indeed effective ... if you can afford such an ad campaign in the first place.

As Charlie pointed out, a MORE affordable and effective way to spend $1,600 would be to establish a specific interest, limited direct mail campaign focused on exactly the market you seek to attract ... martial arts dojos, dance schools, public school events, youth sport leagues, and of course brides (if that's what you want and you work the local bridal fairs to get HOPEFULLY some decent mailing lists ... not always the case).

I've spent as little as $100 developing basic large (8 1/2 x 5 1/2) postcards, sending out 50 or less to a specific market and getting better than 10 percent response. I've ALWAYS had a R.O.I. and more than recouped my costs with these campaigns. I talk about them a lot, and other video production/marketing strategies on my blog.

Definitely expecting immediate results with any type of ad is setting yourself up for disappointment. The thing with ads I do my best to get clients to understand is that what they are paying for is the implantation of an idea in potential customer's minds. That's all. When someone decides they need a thing or service and they are thinking about where to get it, the client wants them to think of them. That's no guarantee of any sales, but if it occurs to them to look to the client that's half the battle.

Most people and businesses don't burn cash on so abstract a possibility for a potential sale. Not to mention for every single sale, you needed to reach the eyes and ears of several thousand people first. Print ads are growing less effective particularly for visual media people/businesses because the medium is dying. The tough part about selling a service is people need to either see what gets produced or know someone who has. Like Rob said, 1 $1600 ad wasn't going to do it. That same ad appearing month after month, year after year may have brought in a handful of sales. Probably not enough to justify the cost of the ad space.

To advertise as an independent or insurgent business or single-person shop, you have to go unconventional, widespread and cheap as you can. That and you have to place the ads where potential clients will see your stuff. Putting an ad for your production services here on VM is great for them (as they bring in the ad revenues) but it won't do squat for you because most people who read this are looking to get into the business or already are. Advertising video services in a wedding mag is good if you do wedding videos. However, you'll also have to gauge the type of women who are mag's primary demographic. Your style of videos may not appeal to them or they may find you too high or too low tech for their tastes.

I didn't even bother reading this whole thing because from the beginning, this chick seemed to expect immediate results from A) only one ad B) only spending $1600.

Advertising with one ad isn't enough, and $1600 isn't enough money to spend either.

here is what she should have done instead:

take $1600.00

1) hit a bunch of garage sales. Buy some stuff.

2) buy some aquariums/cages, a;long with fishies and critters that are easier to breed.

3) place a "Free for the taking" ad in all free local serving online classifieds.

4) set up her phone line to answer with her business name and web address.

5) direct everyone that calls to her website to get her address to pick up thier free item.

6) put a brochure in with each free item.

people love something for nothing.

It was an interesting piece. There seems to be a lot of movement from old school ad's to new ways of doing things but its somewhat dependant on what industry and what region. I'm sure there are still some that benefit from the Yellow Pages, ex: Pizza delivery places.

Reading the responses to the article, to me showed how limited a print ad can be and how interpretation is completely out of your control once you let it go. Personally I think people are becoming to rely on video to learn about any business and the more effectively you can direct them to some on the net, the better off you are. You can provide more information to cover a wider audience to avoid confusion and at the same time convince them as to way they would give you their money.

Of course I could be wrong and all the time and money I've been spending gettinginto/learning HTML5 and smart phone tech could wind up being just another marketing loss. :-)

Herr Chesser,

Yeah, contest adverts are often a PIA because there's soooo much room for scams and chicanery to envelope eager filmmakers. Legitimate film festivals have enough of a scam element to them as is, but when you start getting stuff from overseas the likelyhood of it being a rip-off reaches near certainty.

In this case, I checked it out and though there is no upfront entry fee two things set off my 'Scam Sense'. One, it's an overseas based contest in Africa and they're paying the potential prize in Euros (without an entry fee?) Second, you can't just pull up the rules which is supposed to be on a downloadable pdf without entering into the contest. Whether it's just a bad set up on their website, or the business end of a cyberscam, it's not worth messing with. Not to mention they say nothing about whether they'll sponsor a trip for festival winners to attend the award ceremony. Any film fest worth their salt will do that for at least one international winner

So as I said, "Filmmaker Beware". And I agree, that VM needs to setup some solid guidelines for these contests.

This area of moderating give me a headache, Mr. Porter. I wish there were a better way to research and define the entities or groups involved, the veracity of their promotion and the legality of their claims. But I am at a loss. I've canned a few that simply did not seem to pan out when checking the links, etc. Others, I simply cannot feel positive about them, but don't want to discourage Videomaker Forum participants from potentially positive contest experiences.

Your warnings are always good for readers to heed ... It's just too difficult to assess the validity of these various contest calls. Wish Videomaker could/would make it a primary concern and seriously follow up or establish some SOLID guidelines for anyone posting film or video contests.

I wouldn't say I skipped a business plan, I just didn't have to spend time thinking about it or writing it. The plan is to do what I have to to provide for my family. I could have typed out a plan, I guess but, as John Lennon said, life would have happened while I wasted that time.

Many are habitual. Look how many car ads you see on tv that cannot be afforded today. Why do they continue to pay for folks to pee, hit the fridge and tivo through their spots? Because their daddy advertised on tv. Seriously, that's why. Evolving them to web advertising is like putting a computer mouse in my grandpa's hand. It scares them. It's ironic how many companies pretend and even advertise to lead the industry. Truth is they all wait for the other guy to make a move then they do it. When one follows, they simply can't be the leader.

Thanks Grinner. To your point regarding affording a great video, most businesses would realize that in most cases, video will provide a better advertising ROI. A great question to ask businesses is; if they consider advertising an investment or cost. There is usually a higher cost for not doing great advertising, which is lost market share. Without customers, we have no business. Even the most successful companies continue to advertise, since someone else is always trying to grab your market share.

I'd rather watch it than read it.

Same thing... different wording.

All businesses know this, some just don't know they can afford great video.
