I'm not familiar with Final Cut Express. In Sony Vegas this would be
relatively easy to correct, using one or more of the Color Correction
tools, the Primary and Secondary Color Correcter and Color Curves.

If you have color correction tools, try establishing white first --
the girl's teeth or the white stripes in the ref's shirt, for example
-- with the center wheel. Then use your secondary CC plugin to tweak the
blue channel and, if necessary, use Color Curves to further tweak. Also
see what happens if you use the desaturation plugin to tone down the
blue.

It will take some experimentation on your part but you shouldn't have to resort to going to black and white.

Hey Gang,

This is my first post. I'm currently editing the first episode to a new web series that I'm creating. I rented two field cameras from a TV station and shot the episode outside with both cameras. When I came back to edit, one camera had recorded the footage nicely, while the other recorded everything in a blue hue as if the camera had a blue filter on it (But it didn't). I am now playing around with Final Cut Express trying to get the blue hue footage to look like the regular footage and the Color Corrector filter is not solving the problem--either I'm not using it right or it's not up to snuff.

Does anyone know a) how to solve my problem, b) of any software that might solve my problem? I have Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 and After Effects CS5 on my computer, but have not used either of these yet--if you can help me resolve my problem using either of these, please let me know.

To view the blue hue, please go to: http://www.youtube.com/totallybragging. The first shots of the girls have the blue hue. And later on in the trailer when Cortney says "Bragging" that's the color I'd like to have on the blue hue shots.

If this problem cannot be resolved, I'm thinking that I can just convert the blue footage to black and white, which might work???

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

So really bizarro. My clip is about 6-7 minutes long shot on a 5dmk II with a mke 400 sennheiser shotgun mic. In the .mov file when played on my mac the audio is fine and complete. When I import it into CS 5.5 premiere when you play the file in either the source window or the sequence it strangely about 2 minutes in plays the audio from the beginning, looping it. The video isn't looping. It happens right after the other camera I had timed out and made a shutter noise, but that's it. Has anyone ever had something like this happen? Any suggestions on what to do??? This is driving me nuts. I restarted the program and restarted the computer, still same issue.

That old deal was done, but they gave me an even better one for what I needed! I had CS4 extended, and was dying to be able to upgrade even just my photoshop to CS5. They ended up giving me some bizarro upgrade with 20% off, but it resulted in me getting CS5 production premium, so I will get that new Photoshop I wanted, and Premiere and After effects, all for 520+tax. I lose my most current version of acrobat pro and dream weaver, but I have an older version of acrobat pro and I never use dreamweaver any more. So HOOOOOORAY!!!!! you rock my socks! Thank you!!!!

Vail,

You're better off with FCP or Premiere since you're a Mac user. Vegas is PC only so you'd have to make a Win Partition on your main drive and deal with Bootcamp. I've got friends who use macs and did the bootcamp thing to use Vegas and they all say it works better on a PC rig.

Wow that's PAINFUL because I had wanted to upgrade to CS5 for photoshop, but had given up since it was so expensive and figured I'd live with CS4 for now. I will call them first thing tomorrow. Wish me luck! If not, I'll probably go with FCP X because the nice thing is I have a huge apple store down the street from me where they are willing to help me out if I get stuck on something. I won't have that help from Adobe.

If you call like, tomorrow, you MIGHT be able to beg Adobe to sell you Production Premium at the discounted price that expired yesterday. They might lose out of $850, but it would make you a long-term customer, which would be a win for them in the long run...

It's a shame you didn't ask this a few days ago. Adobe Premiere Premium was only $850 up until yesterday (it's usually $1700). You would have had everything you'd need for quite some time.

FCP used to be very capable, up through FCP7. Now that they have released FCP X, it's more for consumers/prosumers, in my opinion. However, it might be enough for you since you work by yourself. Basically, FCP X doesn't play nice with other programs (no XML, OMF, etc. exporting), it doesn't allow for monitoring via external monitor, media management is different (and seems clunky in my opinion), it doesn't handle codecs natively, and there's a whole bunch of other problems that make pros hate it. But you said yourself you will only be editing occasionally, and it sounds like you'll be working by yourself. So it might be fine for you. I can't say much more than that. I've only read about it. I haven't bothered to buy it.

Adobe has come a long way and is very capable these days. Apparently it works flawlessly with the other Adobe programs, too. It works will with all codecs natively, which is a big plus. And depending on the computer model you own, you may be able to take advantage of the GPU acceleration and 64-bit processing. I just got the Premiere Premium bundle the other day and am looking forward to digging in.

You sound like you're on a Mac, so I don't think you'll be able to use Sony Vegas. I don't think they make it for Mac...

I'm a wedding photographer who has just started using her 5dMKii to make promotional videos and vlog entries on my blog. With some of my past projects in iMovie, there would be blockyness in the blacks and grays. So I went to apple and they told me the blockyness problem I was having was that iMovie was unavoidably compressing my files from my 5DmkII output during the transcoding, they suggested switching to Final Cut Pro. In asking a few of the videographer's I've worked with, none of them have mentioned working with FCP. They are either working with Vegas or Premier. FCP is considerably cheaper at $299 (although I see I may need motion and compressor if any of my clients ask for DVD movies with pictures). Sony Vegas Pro is $599.95. And Premiere Pro is $799. Vegas and Premiere have to have something that FCP doesn't for that difference in price right? I'm just wondering for me as a wedding photographer, who is only using this to do the occasional video editing, does it make sense to spend the extra $300-400 bucks. I don't want to buy FCP and then realize, d'oh actually in a month or two of using FCP I realize I want/need Vegas or Premiere. So for those who have used them all, what do you think of them and the differences between them? Also what's the learning curve like? I'll be coming from iMovie, which I have pushed to its editing limits, and I know CS4 Photoshop well. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Just thought I would chime in here. Depending on the job, I switch between FCP on my MacBookPro, Premiere Pro on either the MacBook or my PC and on simple projects, Sony Vegas Pro on my old PC desktop, which gives faster access to a lot of features and a very good integrated audio toolset without having to use an external audio editor.

I just finished a project where I captured live video into FCP through a Matrox MX02 Mini, did my rough cuts on FCP, exported the .mov files and continued the edits in Premiere CS5.5 (Which I am transitioning over to) The Matrox box doesn't (yet) import directly into Premiere. There are a lot of fanboys who will extol the virtues of one NLE over another. To me they are tools in the box. My Craftsman roll-around has a LOT of screwdrivers... You use what will give you the best results for the job at hand.

Because apple discontinued FCP, I see no reason to learn it now. It'd not hurt you any... I just don't see it helping you either. Bottom line, if it's free, go at least learn some mac tricks. If it's not, save your money and do some online tutorials for the tools you'll be using.

i suspect what you learn in final cut pro will translate to premiere pro

i started with pinnacle studio and made the transition to premiere pro quite easily, i found it pretty easy to use

i think you'll have a harder time figuring out the differences between the mac operating system and the PC operating systems, but if you're familiar with PC's that should be no problem in the end. that's just my two cents.

good luck!

So i'm trying to become a Video Editing Professional in Africa.
In my country, Apple Mac's are very expensive, and hard to come by.
It's all about PCs where I come from.
Now the NY Film School is doing dome training programme for folks in Nigeria, and I have chosen to take training in Video Editing.

The problem is the training will be done on the Final Cut Pro software which requires the use of Macs. So my fear is that at the end of the training, if I don't have a Mac, I would need to continue my training with some other software, like Adobe Premiere. So my question now is, are the differences in FCP and AP so much that I shouldn't bother with Final Cut Pro at all???

"They'll pipe in on this thread any minute now...."

Nah,

That's good advice from an experienced and respected Mac guru. Things are so similar between the two platforms now with hardware the only diff now is just the software. If you get cross-platform software then the differences diminish further. At the higher ends Mac's and PC's cost the same and you'll get what you pay for from the top PC co's.

So it really comes down to what you want to use. Since you're not doing this for a living, it wouldn't kill you to do some experimenting to the point your wallet will allow. Just make sure you check the specs on whatever you plan on getting vs the requirements of any software you're looking at. If you're looking to work with AFX and other Adobe products, you're going to need some specific hardware in your rig like a GPU, RAM and CPU. Those can get pretty expensive whether you get a pre-built rig or build your own.

And yes you can build your own mac again. Just not legally.

iMac's current models are powerful enough, and you get free software to mess with when you want to get away from your Adobe Premiere programs.

Also the Mac Powerbooks are pretty powerful as well, and with external hard drives so affordable, a solid basic editing environment if you want (or need) to go portable.

There's plenty to pick from in the PC arena as well. They'll pipe in on this thread any minute now ;-)

I have been making short movies for 4 years with my Dell computer and Studio Pinnacle 12 software. I have had more than my share of frustrations with these two and I am ready to upgrade. Cost is not really that big of an issue for me but I do not want to over build my system either.

Should I go with a Mac or PC, desktop or notebook? and which software program? I really like the work done with Adobe after effects so I am leaning towards Adobe Premiere.

Any advice is welcomed

Cheers!

Yes, I believe you can just choose file Import and navigate to the premiere pro project file.

I am new to Premiere so I apologize if this question is amateurish.  I created a project in CS4 that is not working correctly.  Is it possible to import the entire timeline along with assets associated with it into a new project?

Â

Thanks for your help.

I name my files "V1 Name of Project" V standing for version. I keep adding files and the final project I also like naming it "FINAL NAME OF PROJECT" in capital letter so I can differentiated it from the others quickly. I back up my projects along with all the media (videos, songs, pictures) in one folder on a external hard drive (usually copy-paste the project folder from the computer hard drive to the external). I make sure I have all the media in the project folder (even if I have to duplicate the media files) then I delete everything from my computer hard drive and spend some time telling Premiere were are the new files located. When I need to see the project again I open it directly from the external hard drive.

As far as naming the project files, I start my first save with Project_0001. this after i pull in all the resources, clips, audio, etc., I think I am going to need. After that each editing session becomes the next in sequence _0002, _0003, etc. When I get to the point where I think I am done I will save it as the next record number as well as to a Final Version sub-folder under the project folder with Project_YYMMDD (year, month, day) this becomes a golden file and I do not touch it again until I render it to playable file or DVD.

I let that sit for a while (a few days at least) and come back to review it with "fresher eyes". I know the last file in both folders are the same so if more edits are required I open the last _00XX file edit and save as next _00xx and a copy to the Final Version sub-folder.

I did the external drive backup for a long time and still do but no longer take the drives offsite. I use an online based backup that continuously backs up any drive (and/or folder(s)) you choose. I won't mention the name here because I am not advertising for them but I have used it successfully for 2 years now. If the entire machine dies, or worse, you can simply restore all files to another computer. They recently even added remote access to the files (since they are backed up continuously) it is like having remote access to your primary computer.

When you save in Adobe, or any software, really, just save it on the data drive. For example, I have a folder for Adobe, with subfolders for Premiere, Photoshop, Flash, etc. I save the project files in there. If I reformated and opened up one of those project files, it would automatically open all the related files and restore all my edits, as long as the data drives and folders are the same. You wouldn't change folders, but just make sure the drive letters haven't changed, either. If they do, you can either change the drive letters back through Manage in My Computer or you can "lead the way" for Adobe on each clip to find it. The latter is kind of a pain.

I've actually done it--I had to reformat once because some free software I downloaded screwed up my codecs. After hours of trying to fix it, I realized it was just easier to reformat.

As for file names, I like the "double FINAL" name, and I've seen those, too. It seems like there was a Videomaker article on naming files. I could not locate it on this site, but I might not be typing in the right keywords. Closest I could find was this: http://www.videomaker.com/article/14192/ (which is still a good read but not what you're looking for exactly).

Thanks for your input! Along these same lines, let's say that the main HD fails and you have to reformat. From a fresh install, you load Adobe CS4 back on. Specifically, how does one go about pulling back into Premiere the project files and assets? How should these be saved on the secondary HD? Would I simply go to open a project, browse to the project file and it will all come together? Or do I have to individually pull in the assets again?

Also, let's say I have saved many versions / cuts as I've worked on it. Does anyone have a good naming system that they use? Such as "Rough Cut 1A Film Festival Project" etc...? I always seem to end up with names like "FINAL FINAL USE THIS, THIS IS GOLD COPY" or something similarly absurd. Hah.

Thank you!

Put all your OS and software on one hard drive.

Put all your data (project files, music, video, photos, etc.) on AT LEAST one other hard drive. I put music and photos on one, and video on another one.

Back up all the data (but not OS files) to the external on a regular basis. You can simply copy and paste. I wrote a simple batch file that runs daily and backs up; that verifies the file attributes as it copies them to make sure it's correct. Google XCOPY to see more about that, or ask me any questions.

I swap out my backup drive once a month and store one in a safe deposit box in case of fire, etc. I figure that if I lose my home backup AND the safe deposit copy, I've got bigger things to worry about...

I'm anxious to see what others do, so please don't let me deter others from joining in on this thread.
