Barth,

Dude, you recut the entire flick and put it on line? That's dedicated. Don't know if anyone will watch it. Not to mention, there's probably going to be an issue concerning piracy. Be advised.

Hello, When I transfer video clips in and before I start a project, I can view the video clips and audio. But sometimes if want to view the video clips in the windows 7 video folder, which I can, but the audio is all buzzing. The Premier elements 8 software takes a while to boot up and just for quick viewing of the clips I use the Windows 7 video folder. Why is there no audio in the Windows 7 video folder and just a lot of buzzing? Thanks, Steve scmason@charter.net

Hey guys,

Thanks for the suggestions. I know, even i had a hard time reading the text. It was because the video had to be between 5 Min and 5min 30 Secs. If it was less or more than that the student would lose automatically 30 poitns, so the you could only get a 70. I just HATE that teacher! I mean, i think he thinks he knows everything about multimedia presentation! But oh well, what can i do?

So, the people were just overreacting, right? I mean, Or it was really really awesome or those people never saw a 5 min video made on Vegas. lol

Thanks,

I agree with Rob's comment on the text but with what you had to work with I would not sweat it. Maybe splitting up some of the longer reads would help with the timing.

Not bad. My biggest issue is making your audience read things on the screen. Go with a voice over. Second, the text isn't on screen long enough. You, as the editor, should be able to read it twice (maybe even three times) before you cut away from it, or dissolve out of it, or whatever. Make sense?

Nice job though.

So, what happened is that my brother comes at 12:07 AM, and says, "Oh, Caio, I kinda forgot to ask you something before. I have this project on History class and i need to make a video about the book Uncle Tom's Cabin."

I felt honored, you know? my brother was asking for me to help him. He is 16 and i am 14. So, i ask him, "When is it due?"

"Tomorrow Morning" - he answers me.

" You know that i can't make a video in such short time."

"I know it is hard, but i was thinking of doing it on Movie Maker"

"If you use Movie Maker i will kill you."

"What?"

"Ah... Nevr mind! i will do the video for you!"

So, I made the video in 3 hours in Sony Vegas Pro 8, Made a really cool DVD Menu With DVD Archictect and Photoshop, and gave the DVD to him. When he came back the next day, he was like, "WOW CAIO! My teacher loved the video! He said it was one of the best that he ever saw! MY..ahhh... I mean YOUR video will be on the morning annoucements!"

So, doing this video i lerned several things.

1- Helping Others Feel Good

2- This was the first time that i used the Pan/Crop Tool in Vegas. I think i got it how to use.

3- It feels really bad when someone else takes credit for your work. Specially when 5,000 Students see the video, are amazed by it, and they think that you didnt do it.

SO, what i am asking, my fellow videomakers, is to tell my your opinion about my video. I mean, I thought it was great, but not THAT GREAT! Is everybody overreacting or is the video really really awesome? Tell me your Honest Opinion. And also, how can i improve my video? Any tips will be appreciated!

Thanks,

Caio =D

PS.: It wasn't a total blow for me. My mom got to know what happened, and she paid me 100 bucks for the video! =D but i am not going to use the money. I am going to donate it to the Pet Shelter that i volunteer on. They are really great people, with really great animals! =D

the video will look blurry because you are taking video at 29.97 frames per second and stretching it out for slow motion. Vegas will try to interpolate the frames in order to fill the gaps. you can try different interpolation methods. also if this video is to be viewed on the computer or LCD screen, render progressive and not interlaced.

Also, what format is your miniDV footage. ( ex. AVI, MOV)

You want to make sure you have the best possibly quality prior to encoding DVD. If your video was compressed or converted to a lossy format somehow during the editing process, it will not look pretty once that file is finally compressed to Mpeg 2 DVD.

There will always be some quality loss when encoding for DVD. (even if you can't notice it)

DVD footage needs to be mpeg2Â which is a lossy format, but it shouldn't look bad if its encoded properly.

The three general formats are:

1 PASS CBR:

This is for shorter videos that have a minimal amount of fast action movements and/or pans This is the faster method of encoding and will render a larger file.typically the best bit rate will be 8mbps, but 7mbps is good too. You can go higher but this is not recommended because it may be to fast for some DVD players.Â

1 PASS VBR

This setting may not be available with many encoders and really isn't necessary, but it would typically be used with longer videos with a minimal amount of fast movement.

2 pass VBR

This is used for longer videos that include fast action movement. It will analylze the video in the first pass and than encode a higher bit rate for parts of the video that have fast action and lower bitrates in the areas that have less movement. This format maximizes quality while maintaing a smaller file size. The bitrate will depend on how long your video is.  In variable bitrate encoding, there are 3 settings:

   - Average Bitrate - Maximum Bit Rate  - Minimum Bitrate

The range between 6.5 -8.0 mbps will render better quality, however, if you video is over 90 minutes, you'll have to use a lower range.

I have noticed that motion graphics and animated backgrounds seem to be more affected by DVD compression, so if this describes your video, expect there to me some undesireable effects. There really is not too much you can do...DVD compression was great for awhile, especially when there were only tube TVs. The moitors today are very detailed and show off all the imperfections. Â

If you have a Good HD monitor, you'll notice that any Hollywood Blockester on DVD has some artifacts in the motion graphic intros...and in some cases, it's really bad...including text. You'll also notice some artifacts in the darker scenes of the movie as well. But sometimes, you really can't tell unless you're looking for it.

It also may help to do a search for a good Bit Rate calculator. This may make it a little easier for you to determine the settings for VBR. If you don't like the quality using the settings that the bit rate calculator gave you, try using a higher rate if you video didn't max out the space on the DVD.

Regards,

Corey

Its not necessary to know this, but you may see settings for GOP(groups of pictures).  You can usually keep this at the default setting. GOP is the compression technique that gives DVD compression its lossy characteristic. Thaey consist of I-frames B-frames and P-frames.

I found this following explanation from wikipedia to be rather humorous the fist time I read it:

MPEG-2 specifies that the raw frames be compressed into three kinds of frames: intra-coded frames (I-frame), predictive-coded frames (P-frames), and bidirectionally-predictive-coded frames (B-frames).

An I-frame is a compressed version of a single uncompressed (raw) frame. It takes advantage of spatial redundancy and of the inability of the eye to detect certain changes in the image. Unlike P-frames and B-frames, I-frames do not depend on data in the preceding or the following frames. Briefly, the raw frame is divided into 8 pixel by 8 pixel blocks. The data in each block is transformed by a discrete cosine transform. The result is an 8 by 8 matrix of coefficients. The transform converts spatial variations into frequency variations, but it does not change the information in the block; the original block can be recreated exactly by applying the inverse cosine transform. The advantage of doing this is that the image can now be simplified by quantizing the coefficients. Many of the coefficients, usually the higher frequency components, will then be zero. The penalty of this step is the loss of some subtle distinctions in brightness and color. If one applies the inverse transform to the matrix after it is quantized, one gets an image that looks very similar to the original image but that is not quite as nuanced. Next, the quantized coefficient matrix is itself compressed. Typically, one corner of the quantized matrix is filled with zeros. By starting in the opposite corner of the matrix, then zigzagging through the matrix to combine the coefficients into a string, then substituting run-length codes for consecutive zeros in that string, and then applying Huffman coding to that result, one reduces the matrix to a smaller array of numbers. It is this array that is broadcast or that is put on DVDs. In the receiver or the player, the whole process is reversed, enabling the receiver to reconstruct, to a close approximation, the original frame.

Typically, every 15th frame or so is made into an I-frame. P-frames and B-frames might follow an I-frame like this, IBBPBBPBBPBB(I), to form a Group Of Pictures (GOP); however, the standard is flexible about this.

Is the quality of a consumer miniDV camcorder going to look bad when burned to a DVD?

No. Just compress it properly. You may not even really have to compress it if your video is less than 4.7GB.

What are the best settings to render the miniDV video footage and burn it to DVD and have the greatest possible quality?....

Â

I just render it as DV/DVCPro NTSC. Â

A few years ago, Sony had been including a small set of Magic Bullet plug-in effects. I remember that an "old film" effect was one of them. Just now I looked at my version 8, and don't see any mention of Magic Bullet. But I do see many plug-ins, incuding one for "old film". Maybe Sony decided they have enough Sony plug-ins, and no longer need Magic Bullet plug-ins. (Just my guess.)

John,   Thanks for the reply. I tried holding shift and starting Vegas, no luck! I've reinstalled Vegas a couple of times already (before I posted). AND... I've tried restoring to a restore point (2 different points before the AVG thing) and both failed.

One thing I found in a post somewhere was a different Vegas error: the post said to: Start - Run - 'sfc /scannow' then: Start - Run - 'chkdsk /r'. And the guy posted back that everything worked! I tried this but came to a point to where it asked me to insert my CD that I used to install SP2. I didn't have one so I might try making one and trying again and inserting the disc. Basically it's making sure that all the System files are in place and correct.

OR... I might just reload the whole system. My laptop came with Vista and I put XP on it anyway and have all the drivers I need, so I know I can get there.

Hit me back if you come up with anything else. I post back with any miracles I might find.

hmmmm.... interesting problem, i would first try a "reset" of vegas by holding the shift key while starting vegas. that will restore everything to it's defaults...... second thing i would try is to reinstall vegas to fix any files that have been corrupted, third thing i would try is a system restore to before you upgraded avg to 8 and see if you still have problems.

Good Luck

 Hey all,

I started a new project in Vegas 8 the other day, I wanted to get my clips in and save off the project to edit for later. I threw in the clips, waited for all the audio to load and went for the save. I received the following error:

Error - " An error occurred while saving the project file MemorialDay.veg. The file could not be created. "

I've messed with folder permissions in file explorer. The folder alway has a green square in the 'Read only' box (not a check, just a green square) I clear the green square and save for this folder and all below and still I get the error.

I did one time get the project to save by naming the project something else and while in the 'Save As' dialog box, right mouse clicked the folder I was saving in and did the 'Read Only' box clear and continued. It did save the project and and when double clicked in file explorer brought up Vegas and the project.

But...

When I made a modification to the project and tried to save it gave me the same error as above. AND... when I closed everything and went back in using file explorer the project was renamed to PROJECT.veg.bku. I tried the same thing over again and that time I went back in the project was GONE! Not renamed, but gone.

I CAN'T HAVE THIS !!! I need to get some editing done.

Last week I upgraded my AVG Free virus application to Ver 8 from 7.5 like I was told to do and it made my laptop run 'funny'. Everything took forever and some things just wouldn't load, but they showed as running in Task Manager! WEIRD! I looked at Avira's virus and it has some good reviews so I uninstalled AVG and am now using Avira's Antivir. That's when I brought up Vegas to get some work done. And now I'm not getting anything done except typing out my probelms.

One note: In the past I would be editing and go to save and get this error. I would try again a few seconds later and it would save. I never thought much of it. Now it will not save a project at all.

Has anyone encountered this?

Is it something to do with the File I/O manager of Vegas?

Thanks in advance,
