yes, definitly, the quality will as good as the dvd file. I want to say the files one blu ray will be better, cause While a standard DVD uses a 650 namometer red laser, Blu-ray uses a shorter wavelength, a 405 nm blue-violet laser, and allows for almost ten times more data storage than a DVD.

I bet those cameras are far superior to mine (albeit bigger). One thing I dislike about Sony (mine anyway) that I failed to mention before is the lack of ability to add a mic. Not only is there no mic input, but you're limited to Sony's selection of mics which is minimal and they're more designed for amateurs--okay for me, for now, but not much room to grow. Take that into account and make sure you're happy with the add-ons you have access to through Sony--if it's anything like mine, third party add-ons won't work--mine only takes Sony. Check into that.

As for transfering, I LOVE the fact that mine records straight to a Memory Stick Pro Duo, and I can take that out and put it in my computer, copy and paste it to its new home on the hard drive and there it stays, forever. No changing the format, decoding it, etc. Just cut and paste. Then edit in Pinnacle or Premiere Pro (I use both). You cannot beat that. Make sure the camera can do that if that's important to you.

I"m still not a pro editor, and thus my Youtube selection shows nothing in HD at this point, yet. Sorry I still have nothing to share on that front. Here's someone else's though, in 720p (it also shoots 1080i):

Okay, cool

But, i been thinking about those :

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=11034787#specifications

And

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665551067#specifications

The first has best quality, of what i've seen on youtube. But is it good for all that money?

And how will i be able to edit things? Will it get on a card i can take into my computer? or how is it going to work?

That's the one! I can say I'm pretty happy with it. It's definitely HD--looks great on my 46" HD TV. I\d say it's every bit as "HD" as the best TV and Blu Rays I watch. You need adequate lighting to make the HD really "pop." Footage outside during the summer is top notch. It's not great with fast moving pans (tends to blur a bit). Other than that, I have no complaints.

Also, I can just take the card out and cut and paste the footage off the card onto my hard drive and it's ready to edit. Can't beat that!

What do you already have?

Obviously you have a computer but what type and speed/RAM, etc...(meaning is it powerful enough to edit video)?

Do you have any software? If you are using a newer PC, you should have Windows Movie Maker, which is enough to get you started.

I started on a budget (although not HD at the time) and was able to get an inexpensive consumer video camera (about $400 at the time), inexpensive non-linear editor (NLE) which has evolved into Sony Vegas Movie Studio ($70 at the time), a WalMart tripod (about $30) and a few little goodies to help (royalty free assets - like animated backgrounds, music, etc...).

You could easily do the same today with your budget (unless you need a new computer, then you're hitting up against the high end of your budget - not impossible, just a bit more work.

I would edit in 1080i. If you need to add an effect to a clip and require progressive scanning, bring the clip you intent to add an effect to into Compressor and convert it to 1080p (if you don't have a Kona3 card, compressor is the next best thing for conversions). Then bring that exported clip into whatever effects program you are using.

Even though there's nothing wrong with going from 1080 to 720 during an import, converting from interlace to progressive isn't as simple as changing your settings during an import. However, if you were going from progressive to interlace, that would work. It's easier to interlace progressive footage than it is to de-interlace interlaced footage.

I am filming in 1080i and importing to Final Cut Pro, although the final movie will be standard DVD.

To resolve some interlacing issues and give smoother effects I intend to re-compress the imported footage to 720p prior to edit using media manager. Is this standard practice or are there reasons not to do this?

Yeah, it's starting to sound like I got a raw deal on the camera. Still, I've found some cheap HDV cameras on ebay (and a few cheap HDV decks), but will they maintain 24 fps (or even work at all) when I play back my 24p MiniDV tapes? Neither the cameras nor the decks have 24p listed as one of their capabilities; they're either 30 or 60p.Â

yea. you should be able to put the tape into a cheaper camcorder with no quality loss. Also, try looking for a used HDV deck, that is, if you will trust the previous user. Seems you may have been screwed with your purchase of this used camera.Â

I've read that the reason why Firewire ports can burn out like yours did is because of the sudden jolt of electricity that goes to the port once you plug it in. The port could also burn out on your computer. So the best thing to do is plug in your camcorder and turn it on while the computer is off. Then don't turn off your camcorder that your using as a deck...ever.

I have a miniDV deck connected to my computer and I never turn it off. Â

I finally sent the camera to JVC out of frustration... apparently the firewire circuit has been shorted either by myself or the previous owner. As much as I relish the thought of paying the $1,928.17 I was quoted to replace the mainboard, I was curious if anyone knows of any cheap workarounds.Â

I simply don't have the funds to purchase an HDV deck outright, but I was curious if I could put a MiniDV tape with 24p HDV footage into a cheap consumer handheld HDV camcorder and use that as a replacement deck. Any thoughts or better suggestions?

I recently acquired a used (but in excellent condition) JVC HD100U. Everything seems to work fine on the camera, but the problem I (and apparently half the people who own this type of camera) have is that I cannot capture 720 24p HDV footage in ANY NLE program.

I've been scouring the internet for a solution to the problem... I currently use Final Cut Pro 6.0, which has no problem recognizing the HD100 when it's set to DV mode, but when set to 24p it simply cannot even find the camera.

Being lucky enough to have several friends with PC's, I tried my luck with Sony Vegas 8. That too failed to recognize the camera.

I've tried numerous workarounds (neither HDVxDV nor DVHSCap recognizes the camera either), but nothing seems to work. I'd assume that the Firewire port on the camera was malfunctioning if it weren't for the fact that it works fine in DV mode...

Again, it seems bizarre that instead of failing to import footage properly (dropped frames, lack of timecode, etc.), no NLE will even see that my camera is connected.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Is there some setting on the camera for outputting HDV that I need to change?
