I was curious if anyone has used the panasonic Ag HMC70U.

Almost everyweek someone on these forums asks what camera to buy and I ran across this unit on B&H (link below). It has tapeless workflow, 3CCD, and XLR inputs all for $1695.00 which is a lot of what people are looking for so I was curious what people thought about it.

So I was wondering. I got my dad a JVC HD HDD camcorder. The problem is that it records the HDV MPEG file to a .TOD format.

Do all of the HDD camcorders record MPEG to their own formats?

Dear Birdcat: You need not accumilate footage on hdd forever. A cheaper solution is to fetch your footage with a video editing (software) like Pinnacle Studio 12 ultimate and write it on normal DVD with normal DVD writer as AVCHD disc. However you can only get ± 35 min of footage on disc but the quality at 100% is blue ray like. You can stretch to ±45 minutes without noticeable quality drop. The correct option maybe is to get a Blue Ray Writer and save on Blue Ray Disc. The last option is more expensive but a lasting solution. Blue Ray Writer in your currency ± $ 250 empty Blue disc ± $ 20-25. You will have to comply with minimum Computer Processing power(for 1080P at least Core2 Quad with decent Screen card) Happy edditing

I think as a rule three chip cameras are better than single chip cameras (Red One exception noted).

You may want to look at other than HDD - like SxS or P2 based or even HDV. I am now using a HDD consumer HD camera (Sony HDR SR11) and while I love it and am very pleased with it's performance, I kinda wish I had a physical copy of what I film for backup purposes. Right now, I copy from the camera to TWO external hard drives on my PC before deleting from the camera just to make sure I don't lose anything in the event of a HD crash (have had this hapen already - lost some stuff and it will cost me lots of $$$ to get it back).

The biggest thing you need to identify is your budget and once you have a hard number, list your feature priorities and see what you come up with.

Hi,

I am planning to buy a new High Def. HDD camera. I have seen some new Panasonic 3CCD, Sony and Canon Cameras.

I need it to perform well under Low light (indoors) scenery and have a good picture quality. Is the 3CCD lense the best one or is there any other new technology for optimal image quality?

I'm just getting started in filmography and I need a camera (that doesn't suck.) Will I be able to connect any mic to the HV20? I know that I eventually want to put a shotgun mic onto my camera, so I don't want to buy something that needs to be replaced right away.

From the above posts, I heard that it is possible to connect to A/V output so that it serves as a headphone jack.

Is it possible to use A/V input as a microphone input port while recording video?

A quick follow-up here. I've been playing with the HV20 for about a week now and I've been *very* impressed with its capabilities! Low light performance is excellent in HD (slightly less so in SD but still very good), using an external mic is easy (including attenuation--if necessary--from an abbreviated menu), battery life is good. I'm very satisfied with my purchase. Based on the '20 I'd have no reservations suggesting a HV30 for <$1000.

[edit: Oh, forgot to mention: the A/V output connector can be toggled via menu to make it a headphone jack.]

If the camera you're looking at is great except for the headphone jack there is a work around. If you plug in the A/V out jack and get an RCA two jack to single pin (i found one for 1/8 plug) and then get a female to female adapter you can plug in a set of head phones. The two adapters cost about $10.00. You usually get the A/V cable with the camera then all you need is a good set of headphones.

I happened to be in my local Circuit City yesterday and saw they also had an HV30 on display. The '30 was listed at $1100 but the CC website listed it at $829. The salesdroid agreed to match the web price (such a nice guy) and I was about to pull the trigger when I noticed an HV20 next to the '30 in the inventory cabinet. I asked about the '20 and the 'droid looked it up: $429. Since they're basically the same and review sites like camcorderinfo rated both units very high, I popped for the '20. Yes, its a single chip but its larger than other chips in its class. We'll see....

I believe the GS-500 ($700 on B&H) is the modern equivalent to the GS-180.  It doesn't have a headphone jack though.

On the other hand, you could consider getting a juicedlink XLR adapter which will give you pro audio inputs and a headphone jack.

I have a similar problem: I'm looking for a camcorder that doesn't suck in low/moderate lighting conditions and has an external mic input. A Canon ZR900 might work in a pinch, and at ~$250 its certainly affordable (but one chip), but I'd like to get the warm fuzzies about its low-light perfomance before I get it.

Is there still such thing at a 3 ccd camera with a mic input and headphone jack for less than $1000? The closest I can find is a Panasonic AG-DVC20 for 1124.99 through pricegrabber.com. I didn't follow through to see if that price is real though.

From past forums I see the Panasonic PV-GS180 is a good camera. Is there a modern version that is similar with 3ccd, Mic Input, and a Headphone Jack?

i dunno if you'll find one with XLR in that price range. That's the consumer level and XLRs are professional connections. Your best bet will probably be to find a camera in the 500-600 dollar range and then buy an XLR adapter. The XLR adapter will connect to your camera with the 1/8 jack.

A lot of people go with the BeachTek XLR adapter. Â

I use my camcorder for shotting BMX videos of my friends so nothing on a big production scale. I just want a nice (and cheap enough) camera for shotting. So far I have been looking at the Panasonic NV-GS230 and NV-GS320. But since I don't know that much about camcorders I dont know what to look out for.

Thanks for any advice you can give me!
