Evan on "Live Video Setup at Church"

I work in the video production industry. My church has offered to hire me part time to install and operate a live video setup to record and upload sermons to their website. I eagerly obliged. I have experience with live video (td, master control, camera op, etc.), but the engineering side is newer to me.

So, here's my plan as it stands:
-Pick up a small Canon HV40 (or similar) to mount high up in the back of the room.
-Get a larger HD camera (shoulder mount style) that will be more durable and use it with a tripod.
-Pick up some more cameras later on as the budget allows.
-Use the new Black Magic ATEM 1 M/E switcher as a good quality, budget production switcher.
-Run cables
-Install (or build) a cheap intercom/communication system

So, that's a general idea of what I have in mind. Now for the questions.
The ATEM switcher needs to have all of the same quality of video in. (HD1080 59.98) from each camera. It has 4 HDMI, 4 SD/HD-SDI, and one component video that is shared with the first HDMI.

So, I would probably connect the HV40 to the Component input (it outputs 1080i). Question becomes how to run that. From the back of the hall to the control booth location is about 50' (through wall, plug to plug) from that camera. Question is, what cable to use? I was thinking RG6 Dual or Quad shield (3 runs each with BNC ends). Anybody have experience with this? What's the upper range of length for component cable?

For the other camera, I would need to run wire about 75'. Too long for HDMI, and camera doesn't have SDI. So, I need to do one of the following (considering that I will likely have to add other cameras with the same setup).
-HDMI to HD-SDI converter at the camera to take camera's HDMI output and run it as SDI back to the switcher.
-Run camera's component signal back to the switcher and use a component to HDMI converter (cheaper than the sdi converter).
-Use a balun over ethernet

Which is best?

Thanks!

Hello all im new here, i like the emails i get with tips on how to shoot live video and the reviews are helpful. Our church has recently approved for us to get better equipment to broadcast our services live over the internet. All i use is a camera and my laptop. (lol)

My question is can anyone recommend me a good setup for a live production? a video switcher and two good cameras. We ahve a working budget of 10-12,000. I am trying to stream online and record straight to dvd at the same time. So far i have these in mind:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HDR-FX7-High-Definition-Handycam-Camcorder/dp/B000IBDWNS/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_1_2 (camera)

http://www.dvwarehouse.com/Datavideo-SE-800AV-KIT/SE-800AV,-TLM-404,-TLM-702,-RKM-4N7-holder,-RMC-140-p-34436.html&pltid=0c938c0a2ff87da468a309206b46c7ef (video switcher)

what else would i need for this to work? thanks all :-)

Dear all,

I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this. But I have seen some live theatre performances (plays and musicals) that instead of using tradicional backgrounds (usually painted on fabric) they project a video.

The video is not completely still usually but is has some minor movement, reflecting for e.g. a landscape, a sky, etc.

I believe that the bottom part of the composition is almost dark, so the projection is not seen on actors' body. Is this right?

I would like to know if you believe this technique is difficult for doing it in a medium-size theater (let's say a stage about 30feet wide and 25 feet tall)?

What program and or thecnique is used to design the background? After effects? Premiere? (I regularly use the Adobe Suite)

What kind of projector?

I'm going to start recording our church services and broadcasting short clips on the internet. (no more than 20 minutes) I'm also going to have DVD's available by request of the entire service. I have used camcorders to record to vhs but want the software to instantly record from live capture.

Basically I have a HD Camera that i will be using HDMI into my PC with. I have our soundboard also running Firewire directly into the computer i built for this.

I need to know what software i can capture live in HD format with both Video in and Audio In.

I dont want to record on to Camera and Record Audio then mix together.

I want to have Audio in on Track B and Video in on Track A and use software to record simultaniously as one.

What software would allow me to do this. I've looked at multiple software's that allow me to input the video and audio after everything is said and done but i don't want to have to record on the memory card. i want it all to be in one put together file that can either be saved, burned or whatever.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My church has been recording video of the worship services for about 16 months now. One issue always comes up at Christmas/Easter: "Why can't we make a video of the program? We have the CCLI membership?"

Our choir or other special music programs are accompanied by accompaniment tracks rather than live musicians playing the musical score. Is there a clearing house similar to CCLI that can be a "one-stop shopping" source for this purpose rather than having to go to the individual copyright holders?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks soo much for all the advice. I will definetly call CCLI to check with them. I would like to use one of the songs that the choir sings during the opening. I more than likely won't videotape all the songs the choirs and praise team sing.

Once again THANKS a bunch. It's ALWAYS really nice when people actually respond to your posts.

Hey there talented people of videomaker!

I don't know if this is the appropriate place to post my query...but since this is church related, i might as well post it here...

anyway, my concern is this...we've started video recording our church sermons two months ago, it's doing pretty well...we've been using Canon XL-1 and an ordinary PC with a firewire card to record. We have 20 videos already (including wed prayer meetings) and cataloging them manually is tiresome and time consuming. I was wondering if there is a software that can store video files and catalog them at the same time...more like a library type of program.

hope someone could help me!

thanks in advance!

Hi again,

I think I'll start at the end of you last post, on firestore.

It's a great tool, but a spendy tool. On the pro side, you can record up to three hours on it at a time, and it's fast for dumping onto your PC. On the con side, it costs almost $700 for the cheap model, and about a grand for the fancy model.

I've never used them before, but I have used other products by Focus, the company that makes the FireStore. They're a good company from what I've experienced. Yeah, you'll never have to buy another MiniDV tape again, but if you buy three cameras and put one on each of these, you'd have to buy about 1300 tapes before you broke even.

Besides, letting the video dump in realtime gives you the chance to review it right before you edit.

The other option is to buy a super laptop for editing, and plug the camera directly into it and record live. That's all the Firestore is.

They have nothing. No cameras. No computer. No lights. Zip. This is from the ground up.
Do they have any sound equipment? Mic's, cables, anything? Some of that might reduce your need to buy more equipment.

We will be filming all kinds of things... Weddings? Maybe... kids plays, musicals, services, all that kind of stuff will probably get filmed at some point... I'm sure I'll be asked to make videos of anything and everything, but the #1 function is to film original productions. I would rather spend more here though to get the right camera... I also can envision a few years down the road trying to setup a 3 camera shoot for webcasting the services. I'd like to buy a camera that I can use in that setup when the time comes.
The GL-2 is actually capable of this. If you plan on someday getting a switcher, you'll need to buy MA-300's for each GL-2 to convert your composite video into a bnc style connector, but aside from that, you'd be set.

Seriously, if you are sold on Canon, I would say get a couple GL-2's for now. They're not bad. They don't work as well under low lighting as the Sony VX-2100, but since your primary purpose is production of short clips, that's not a problem. And then next year, you can buy an XL-2, which would be a good camera for what you need.

Does the XL1 & XL2 have XLR inputs to where I can just plug mics right in?
Something to know about the XL-1 is that it's an old model, and is being phased out by Canon in favor of the XL-2. That being said, the only prosumer camera Canon produces with built-in XLR jacks is the XL-2. But that camera costs 1/3 of your total budget. Hold off on buying it til next year's budget.

(Re: Bogen 503 vs. Boge 516) How much are we talking here for this?
For the 503, you're talking 275 bucks. The 516 is about $550. Sticks will run anyplace from $200-$600 for a fair set. The 521 controller is usually about $190.

Any brands you recommend here? We'll need this to be portable... we won't really have a "studio" to film in. Everythign will be done on location.
I don't really have any one brand I use or love. The lights I currently use are a Frankenstein'ed collection form who knows how many light kits. I almost never use them, because I mostly do events where lighting is a bad idea, like weddings.

Lapel mics are going to have to be a reality for us at first, because we just won't have the crew or manpower / know-how to start using shotguns right off the bat. I could see us moving to that in the future.
Honestly, for the cost of it, you'd probably be better off buying a nice shotgun mic and paying somebody $8/hr to hold it than to go wireless for productions. The price difference is huge.

But if you do want to go wireless, Shure has a series specifically for videography. You can see them at their website. I have a set of Azden ULT200 mics I use from time to time. They're okay, but because they're not true diversity, they drop out every now and again. Not often, but it happens.

Really, for most of this stuff, you can either get great quality that's not the most convenient, or you can get acceptable quality that's far more convienient, and carries a price tag to prove it.

I got started in a big church that had a TON of equipment. Seriously, if they liquidated their entire AV department, they would easily make over a million dollars. They actually were rated as the second best editing suite in Omaha. Believe me when I say, coming from that background, it's easy for me to want to buy the top of the line stuff, but the reality is that like you, when I started this business I had a budget, and as much as I wanted to get the pretty toys, I've had to put that off to get the sensible stuff for now. But hopefully soon, the toys, they will be mine ;)

I'm interested to see how this all turns out. Keep us informed!

I just finished editing a feature documentary/music DVD. It runs well over an hour, and will be released for retail sale. It's a tour of 12 churches, and a soprano soloist sings in each church, with segments about the history & architeture of each church. I'm not sure how to credit myself on the opening credits. I did all the directing/shooting/editing. It was shot in HDV-video, so I don't want to say "A Foulkes Productions film".. It's more than a video, so "A Foulkes Productions video" doesn't seem grand enough. and "A Foulkes Productions production" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Any suggestions? It will be preceded by the credit "Sissco Inc. presents..."

I'm new to the forum and slightly new to video. I've been fooling with audio and video for along time in more of a amature setting, but I'm now undertaking the design process for a post production "studio" for my church. We are looking at 3 remote PTZ cameras to cover the worship center. We want to capture 3 seperate feeds and do a post production to better edit the service. But we also want to do our capture and edit via computer. Will I need 3 computers and 3 capture devices, or one computer 3 captures. What is the best way to record the 3 feeds?

Hi,

Interesting points OAR.

I take a look at the worship posts wherever they show up. I’m recalling issues like what equipment to acquire to upgrade the AV dept; and questions about switchers, armadas of monitors and many matters relating to live broadcast. These are all relevant to the VM forum and these posts will continue to show up, wherever.

There is no question that houses of worship have huge budgets for AV, focus being to communicate The Message in the most persuasive, sophisticated, palpitatingly immediate (yes even hip) methodologies that are available. I recently left my neighborhood to attend a service in San Diego. I spoke in front of the congregation, so I have some sense that the church could hold 500-600 people (easily) seated. The AV board at the back of the church, feeding the “delivery systems” surrounding the congregation, rivaled boards I have seen in sophisticated recording studios and many larger clubs/entertainment venues. The only churches that don’t have money are the ones that try to hire me to fix an AV problem.

I’d be interested in why VM pulled the plug. In itself, the subject is technical and secular, not promoting the message or giving message content. Perhaps some posts crossed the line into the message area, and this might have been viewed as a sensitive thing that could upset some, due to (probably unintentional) proselytizing. In all other areas, proselytizing is OK as posters inadvertently or otherwise throw in tidbits about weddings, aviation, motor cycle racing, Mom’s birthday, etc. That’s what we are about, capturing real and contrived special moments for clients and posterity; but the worship message is a bit off limits; has its place, and there is PTL no shortage, just not here.

Speaking of secular, I have a cuz now retired who was principal writer/director for one of the major TV Network soaps many years ago. I have never seen a more devout Catholic. He was fired by the TV Network in an arbitrary manner. (Those young turks were lurking about and he was too old, about 40.) He had to sell cars (his own), homes (his own) and ended up teaching for a while at a small liberal arts college to put food on his table. Eventually though, he became a senior producer for CBN (that’s Christian Broadcasting Network/Pat Roberts). Being a seriously practicing Catholic, he was not interested in CBN’s Message and all they cared about was his amazing technical ability to deliver professional programming to their audience. That’s the way it should be.

With all those high end AV systems and those amazing AV budgets in the worship field, I would be surprised if there are not other cyber forums humming out there specializing in this subject at this very instant. I would also be surprised if there is not a trade journal (or two or three) dedicated to this subject, with a title like, Enlightenment Video or HOW Video Today (HOW/Houses of Worship). If this doesn’t exist, someone will make it happen. Interested?
I thought I was just going crazy. I know I've posted a few post in the worship forum and thought it was here at VM. When I couldn't find it I started recalling all the different forums out there that I've contributed to trying to find it. I was right. It was here but now it's not. What happen? There is so many different uses of video that I thought this was a great place to talk with others in the church arena. I hope a moderater, a new name for the forum or what ever is needed to bring it back will. Besides I have some news about what's going on with my church's Video Ministry.

This is interesting stuff.

I got asked to do church video last fall. I use the church's 1 Hi-8 camcorder that runs a line to wireless mics.
It goes to 3 VHS recorders. 1 angle, but it gets the job done. Because I have been doing the church video, I just got hired to help out with 2 wedding videos over the summer.

For those of you who do weddings I want to know if it's ok to use copyrighted music for your clients. The reason I ask that is because I heard that as long as it's for the client personally it's ok to use. I have also visited different websites that have demos from weddings created and they use copyrited music on their sites. Lot's them also let the client choose their own music. Is it ok to use this on websites and client projects?

Wow, I didn’t think it has been that long since my last post but I guess it has. Well, not a whole lot has changed but we are up and running on both local TV and a vidcast. What has changed is that the last time I posted here there was a forum category called worship.
More importantly, we tried getting on local TV back in January. We had problems with the cable company wanting a copy of the show in a VHS format. That was unacceptable for my pastor. If it was S-VHS we may have given it a go. I would have thought the station would have had an mpeg reader at the least but nope. It wasn’t until August did we get it resolved. Our church bought the local cable company a DVD player; one that would switch between its scheduled programming. In the mean time we have been archiving our shows so if we ever had to unplug because of… oh, I don’t know a camera operator strike. We would be able to keep the weekly show going for several months.
Our vidcasts can be seen at http://www.hcctv.org
We have just recently upgraded our jib. www.jonyjib.com traded their earliest model (12 feet) for a newer model (18 feet) with us and we love it. With the extra length I decided that I would like to under-sling the camera. What a difference. Not only was I able to reach back another two rows but it goes up higher despite the older version was slung on top. There are some clear advantages when it is under. There were too many times that I wanted a god’s eye view over the worshipping congregation when the gears would appear in the bottom of the screen. Now, I have to be careful that I don’t get twisted when I begin to spin. Also, with the camera under I’m able to float over the crowd’s heads and make them all nervous. It’s kind of fun.
I think our biggest challenge now will be sustaining a budget. All of our equipment is more then a year old and there will be needs of replaced soon. Hopefully we’ll be able to upgrade to HDV by then.

compusolver Wrote:

Can omni's be placed ten feet from the singers? I'd have thought they would need to be closer...

It depends on the microphone. Some mics are only good for closeup work, such as those designed mainly for vocalists. Others are more sensitive and can pick up sound over a greater distance. Experiment and see what works.

The technique for using omni-directional mics to record stereo is different from using cardioids. With omnis, you will need to physically separate them by some amount of distance. Your best bet would be to experiment with the mics you have to find the optimal separation to get good stereo results. Under the best of conditions, it may not be as good as you could achieve with cardioids.

OK, allow me to cast the first stone(s)..

Depending on your surroundings, the GL2s may not have sufficient Lux rating to give you great color, etc. with available light. If you're willing to setup studio lighting, this won't be an issue, otherwise check into PD-170s or VX2100s.

The fellow who bragged about the on-cam mics of the GL2, probably does great video of his kids' birthday parties, but likely doesn't have broadcast or other pro experience. I would think you're going to want to plug into the house system or use a good wireless lav mic system.

I recently learned that my local cable company has a public access channel for residents of the county. I live in Calaveras County and the Public Access Chanelhttp://www.co.calaveras.ca.us/departments/patv/patv_1a.html here has everything including cameras for your use.... if you are a resident.

I would check with your local cable company and their Public Access Program.
you might want to start with something a little shorter than even the 15 min line. around 8 min is where people start losing interest so 6-8 min is a good starting point. you can make something fun and exciting and short. sometimes keeping it minimal makes it a lot better!

topic wise, you can go with something serious and deep (like drugs or sex) or something a little more humorous, like worship styles or something completely pointless.

unfortunately, i stink at finding funny stuff to make videos out of so i'm not really any help.
