I work in the video production industry. My church has offered to hire me part time to install and operate a live video setup to record and upload sermons to their website. I eagerly obliged. I have experience with live video (td, master control, camera op, etc.), but the engineering side is newer to me.

So, here's my plan as it stands:
-Pick up a small Canon HV40 (or similar) to mount high up in the back of the room.
-Get a larger HD camera (shoulder mount style) that will be more durable and use it with a tripod.
-Pick up some more cameras later on as the budget allows.
-Use the new Black Magic ATEM 1 M/E switcher as a good quality, budget production switcher.
-Run cables
-Install (or build) a cheap intercom/communication system

So, that's a general idea of what I have in mind. Now for the questions.
The ATEM switcher needs to have all of the same quality of video in. (HD1080 59.98) from each camera. It has 4 HDMI, 4 SD/HD-SDI, and one component video that is shared with the first HDMI.

So, I would probably connect the HV40 to the Component input (it outputs 1080i). Question becomes how to run that. From the back of the hall to the control booth location is about 50' (through wall, plug to plug) from that camera. Question is, what cable to use? I was thinking RG6 Dual or Quad shield (3 runs each with BNC ends). Anybody have experience with this? What's the upper range of length for component cable?

For the other camera, I would need to run wire about 75'. Too long for HDMI, and camera doesn't have SDI. So, I need to do one of the following (considering that I will likely have to add other cameras with the same setup).
-HDMI to HD-SDI converter at the camera to take camera's HDMI output and run it as SDI back to the switcher.
-Run camera's component signal back to the switcher and use a component to HDMI converter (cheaper than the sdi converter).
-Use a balun over ethernet

Which is best?

Thanks!

Using a laptop is this way can be problematic and often it is best to have audio go directly to a camera and let it multiplex it with the video. If someone says you are losing "quality" it might be worthwhile to investigate what that means. First, since this to be an internet feed, keep in mind the level of "quality" end-users will have. Second, if the "quality" issue involves distortion in any way, the problem is probably a signal impedance or level mismatch between the audio origin (house mixer?) and the camera. Third, if the "quality" issue is noise then there are engineering or wiring issues to consider, but none of these should be insurmountable.

Having audio and video on separate computer ports is what quite often causes latency issues that are very difficult to overcome.

I can see how this might work, but on a bright stage I can't see the projector being bright enough to be able to see the background clearly enough. Likewise if the stage was too dark your background would glow and illuminate your actors from the back, which could look really cheesey, or if you purposely want to make silhouettes that would be pretty neat.

You can test it out and may be successful, but I wouldn't bank on it.

In terms of creating it are you speaking about animating it all, or filming a scene yourself and looping it to play in the background?

in some cases balancing the lighting can also affect the shadowing. Using also above projector can capture direct scene and picture which is a good idea to do.

Thank you very much, Grinner. Unfortunately, the only way is front projection due to the construction of the theater and budget is very low (independent production) to think in LED, so anything above a projector connected to a DVD player/computer is beyond our possibilities.

rear projection is fine much of the time, depending on lighting. Shadows being a problem with front projection, more and more you'll see the use of LED screens. They work the same as old jumbotrons, really. I've used everything from after effects to Avids to produce content for these screens.

Dear all,

I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this. But I have seen some live theatre performances (plays and musicals) that instead of using tradicional backgrounds (usually painted on fabric) they project a video.

The video is not completely still usually but is has some minor movement, reflecting for e.g. a landscape, a sky, etc.

I believe that the bottom part of the composition is almost dark, so the projection is not seen on actors' body. Is this right?

I would like to know if you believe this technique is difficult for doing it in a medium-size theater (let's say a stage about 30feet wide and 25 feet tall)?

What program and or thecnique is used to design the background? After effects? Premiere? (I regularly use the Adobe Suite)

What kind of projector?

Several ways possible, a video switcher on your end can select which feed goes to the TV. Another way is to send both feeds to different inputs and have the viewer select which feed to watch. Depends on how much control you want over what they see, don't see. Could also take both feeds, and edit them into one video and mail them DVDs of the event.

I'm going to start recording our church services and broadcasting short clips on the internet. (no more than 20 minutes) I'm also going to have DVD's available by request of the entire service. I have used camcorders to record to vhs but want the software to instantly record from live capture.

Basically I have a HD Camera that i will be using HDMI into my PC with. I have our soundboard also running Firewire directly into the computer i built for this.

I need to know what software i can capture live in HD format with both Video in and Audio In.

I dont want to record on to Camera and Record Audio then mix together.

I want to have Audio in on Track B and Video in on Track A and use software to record simultaniously as one.

What software would allow me to do this. I've looked at multiple software's that allow me to input the video and audio after everything is said and done but i don't want to have to record on the memory card. i want it all to be in one put together file that can either be saved, burned or whatever.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would recomend to contact Christian Copyright Solutions. We currently use their licensing for performance. They also have licensing products for webcasting as well as video syncing. Here is their website http://www.copyrightsolver.com/ There is a lot of good information on their website.

The problem is licensing is a very complicated issue. I have utilized their free webinars as well as calling them directly with questions about what we were trying to do at our church. They were very helpfull.

My church has been recording video of the worship services for about 16 months now. One issue always comes up at Christmas/Easter: "Why can't we make a video of the program? We have the CCLI membership?"

Our choir or other special music programs are accompanied by accompaniment tracks rather than live musicians playing the musical score. Is there a clearing house similar to CCLI that can be a "one-stop shopping" source for this purpose rather than having to go to the individual copyright holders?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Our church is broadcasting live on the internet, we recently made some changes to our audio feed and we are running into problems with the audio not syncing up to the video feed. Are there any suggestions on how to fix this problem. The camera feed is directed into the laptop via firewire and the audio is also a direct feed into the laptop. We tried directing the audio into the camera but we loose sound quality hence why we directed into the laptop itself but now there is a lag between audio and video.

In most cases you need to purchase a license just to sing the songs in public during a church service.

If your church does not have a license to perform the songs then they are already illegal.

Hey there talented people of videomaker!

I don't know if this is the appropriate place to post my query...but since this is church related, i might as well post it here...

anyway, my concern is this...we've started video recording our church sermons two months ago, it's doing pretty well...we've been using Canon XL-1 and an ordinary PC with a firewire card to record. We have 20 videos already (including wed prayer meetings) and cataloging them manually is tiresome and time consuming. I was wondering if there is a software that can store video files and catalog them at the same time...more like a library type of program.

hope someone could help me!

thanks in advance!

It might be as easy as a broadband connection in/accessible to the church, a basic two-camera switcher, your cameras and Multimedia Pros check out their options, or check out the options at mogulus.

very interesting about the license thing. We are a spanish speaking church and our songs are in the free domain realm. We do not do copyright songs. But i will look more into it. thanks a lot for that..i had not thought about that.

I have a subscription to kingdom magazine, but their stuff is little oudated and expensive for the equipment they have. it is a great magazine dont get me wrong but i am looking for something that does not include robotic cameras..they are too expensive.

Thanks a million cville for ur help :-)

I have a catalog from Kingdom they market to the church market the web site is Kingdom.com

They have kits for doing video you may want to use as a point of reference for equipment to look at. Some of the kits they have use remote controlled cameras.

If you are going to broadcast over the internet you will need a license to do that . It is somehting our church has looked at but are much further behind you. You can check out a website copyrightsolver.com  They have some very good explanations about what is required as far as license requirement.  We have a performance license thru them that allows us to use some secular music as part of our worship as well as using recorded music for pre-service.

Good luck sounds like a fun project.

Hello all im new here, i like the emails i get with tips on how to shoot live video and the reviews are helpful. Our church has recently approved for us to get better equipment to broadcast our services live over the internet. All i use is a camera and my laptop. (lol)

My question is can anyone recommend me a good setup for a live production? a video switcher and two good cameras. We ahve a working budget of 10-12,000. I am trying to stream online and record straight to dvd at the same time. So far i have these in mind:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HDR-FX7-High-Definition-Handycam-Camcorder/dp/B000IBDWNS/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_1_2 (camera)

http://www.dvwarehouse.com/Datavideo-SE-800AV-KIT/SE-800AV,-TLM-404,-TLM-702,-RKM-4N7-holder,-RMC-140-p-34436.html&pltid=0c938c0a2ff87da468a309206b46c7ef (video switcher)

what else would i need for this to work? thanks all :-)

Having a number of church clients, I know you are looking for the cheapest, simplest way to shoot and edit at the same time. One way to do that is with Adobe On Location (formerly DV Rack.) If you have a PC or a PC partitioned Mac, you can shoot record to tape and record .avi video clips to your laptop or desktop harddrive via a firewire connection from camera to PC. In addition, you can view the video footage on the desktop and connect to an external monitor. Now, you won't be able to 'edit' while shooting, but your clips will be processed quickly (no need to capture footage) and you can do a 'live feed' so to speak. Getting a NewTek or similar device is a much better solution for live feed and switching, but few churches are going to cough up $5k to get said device.

**I just checked on Adobe's website and you can't buy On Location separate from the Production Premium Bundle. However, it finally occured to Adobe to make it cross-platform as of version CS4. If you dig around, you may be able to find a copy of Serious Magic's DV Rack out there (we're holding onto ours with a death-grip!)

Actually, you CAN shoot and edit, also connect to the sound board for a feed - they do it in live studio productions all the time. You will need an AV mixer/switcher that allows multiple camera feed and audio inputs, monitors and communications for calling the shots, an assistant to help at the controls while you watch the camera angles on the monitors and tell your TD (technical director) what camera shot to go to. You also tell your camera people over your communications system to move in, move out, give more/less head room, lead the shot, focus, etc. and anticipate where you will be going with all this. At the same time you are rolling either tape or DVD recorder, capturing this on-the-fly stuff and essentially wind up with an edited mix at the end of the production.

Graphics, cutaways, titles, etc. are either added on the fly, having been prepared ahead of time, or if you have a really sophisticated system, in progress. And, with the stuff recorded on the fly and resulting (with time and experience) in a fairly decent edited production - you always have the option to do post production cleanup editing to polish it up some, if needed.

Of course, this can prove to be an expensive direction to take but, depending on the budget the first place I'd look would be at the available NewTek, Sony or Panasonic mixer/switcher systems. A LOT of houses of worship are incorporating just this kind of production hardware in their productions.

If your mini-DV camera has a microphone input, and you're close enough to the sound board, you can probably run a line from the board to the camera. You'll probably need some sort of adapter for the camera.

When your done shooting, just capture to your hard and start editing. There's no realisitic way to edit while filming.

If you want to edit while the camcorder is shooting I recommend using Adobe Visual Communicator. Is easy to use and you can use it to take live footage and edit it the way you want using different effects. It aso have a teleprompter that its really useful. The only thing that you need to check is if you can use your camcorder with the program.
