I shoot wedding and Bar Mitzvah videos. I am transitioning over to a DSLR (Canon D60) camera for my projects. However, for Bar Mitzvah services, and longer wedding services, I need a camera that can last longer than the 10 min. file size. It would also be my backup camera. I use a Canon GL2 now, and I would like something that uses a card and costs around $1000. I would hate to get something expensive now and then kick myself as the next generation DSLR came out. Any suggestions?

I had an inquiry today to do a wedding on New Year's eve this year. They are looking last minute frantically. They also told me they wanted to edit themselves - which normally kind of worries me just handing out raw footage - but this would save me work on my end, plus the next morning I will be on a flight for vacation for a week so I would not have time to edit right away anyhow.

I am not sure what kind of rate I would give them compared to my normal pricing. Is this just a bad idea to begin with? If not what should I be looking at?

Dear responders, my issues are as follows; and I hope to generate simple and to the point answers that are unbiased, practical, and most importantly current.

I need to select a camera for wedding/event videography. My budget is at around 5000 dollars. It would be great if I could buy a package that would allow me to provide superior quality through my investment in equipment and at the same time remain current. (I dont for my personal reasons want to involve DSLR as my primary videocamera)

I think everyone within the wedding/event videography business understands the issues that may be of concern in this business; furthermore a main issue that i have encountered is the chasm between the 10 +experienced guys and the less than 10 years videographers who have the dv vs no dv issue? FOr instance get the HVR-7zu that does hybrid recording or go with something fresher that is strictly memory based (is their risk or not when taping someones "DAY"? thanks for your humble and to the point opinions.

I've only done a few weddings so far, and after every shoot, I ask the folks if they thought camera lights (during the dark scenes) would be distractive.... and they have all said they would rather have the lights to get a good video than no lights. What is the opinion of other wedding videographers -- camera lights on or off??

I am new to videography, but I am about to embark on a career in it.

I have not had to do this yet, but as I get more into event recording I am sure I will have to deliver HD video. It seems to me that burning Blu-Ray is very expensive. I have seen videographers put the files on Flash Drives and deliver them that way, I wanted to know how people in this forum are delivering finished HD content to clients, and what one would charge.

I have been contracted to video a wedding, with festivities that take place on a 2 acre property. The client wants me to stream the video over the internet from Massachusetts to Texas, and this is not a problem. The problem lies in transmitting the video from anywhere on the property to the "home base," the computer with the Internet connection that sends the video to Texas.

Does anybody know of any relatively inexpensive method of wireless video transmission, for purchase or rental, preferably via HDMI, and attached as a camera accessory?

Hey, i have a GY-HM700U JVC camcorder. Im going to a pretty low key 23 or 25 person wedding reception and wanted to know if it would be overkill to bring that. The alternative would be an unconventional DSLR (canon t2i 550d). I'm thinking just to take the ENG because the DSLR would be way to hard to focus, etc.

I know how valuable wedding videos are, even if the bride doesn't. I worked the wedding circuit and I'm so glad I'm out. Bridezilla! Everyone who works wedding know who I'm talking about. I don't care about the cash, I'm so glad that I'm not employed trying to fulfill someone's stupid fantasy of what they wished they were. I'd be happy and proud to take video of their wedding if they realized what it was, a milestone in the history of their family, a precious historical artifact. I am tired of telling them the reception line is more important to video tape than some ridiculous beach fantasy. I have enough live theatre recording to keep me busy and I take my summers off.
Orpheus on "Wedding Audio - Opinions Needed!"

I'm going to be filming a wedding in about a month or so. I haven't bought any gear yet as far as audio is concerned. I am possibly going to be picking up a Panasonic DVX-100B which would have XLR inputs, but I might only use my consumer level Sony Handycam for the wedding. Ideally, I will have two cameras. I will possibly borrow another consumer level camera to shoot alongside the Sony Handycam I already have. So, with that in mind, the last wedding (also my first wedding) that I shot had horrible audio because I only used the built-in mic on my Sony Handycam. An atrocity, I know.

My budget is limited, but I need to buy equipment that will last and have various uses. I don't want to spend money on throw-away stuff, but I also can't afford anything and everything. In addition to weddings I like to do other event projects along side short films. I MUST make sure I don't lose any audio or have a screw up as weddings are inherently a one time thing. So I need redundancy!

Given my limited funds, I know this won't be easy, but where can I start? What gear can I start acquiring that will get me to the minimum of what I need to successfully shoot a wedding with decent audio?

Do I need three sources? Should I get a shotgun mic, a wireless lavaliere mic, and a H2 or some setup like that? Can I get by with just two audio sources? Can I have three audio sources with one being a backup, but very cheap?

I honestly am not 100% sure on how to mix and layer the audio tracks in the final project, but that will have to come later. My worry at the moment is to get started with getting some audio gear that I can put a little practice into before the wedding.

Thank you for your time, and please know that any and all input is very appreciated!

Hi, i have recieved some emails of interested clients. The problem is im just starting out and i don't have any wedding sample footage to show clients. I have quite a bit of experence with filming/camcorders but i can't get a job since i have any sample footage. I have filmed a baby shower for one client but people want to see wedding samples, so it seams like a waste of time to edit it down to a sample. Any ideas on how to get my foot in the door?

This was my first attempt at doing a pre-wedding day love story. This is only samples of the entire video, as the bride and groom wanted to tie it in with the photo montage - but figured sharing that, people would fall asleep before it came to the video sections. I would love any critique and feedback!

I know a few things offhand that could be improved to begin with. To be honest the couple came to the shoot roaring and ready to go and I think my first mistake was letting them do what they wanted - but they had so much energy. When they were in front of the camera solo I was off talking to the other half, and did not realize until I got home that they told the meeting story 3 different times. If I had known their plan (poor planning on my part) I would have set up 3 different locations - they must have gone over every detail as t all tied together pretty well.

Next was the engagement story. It never made the final cut due to the fact they had different ideas on how to go about it and they decided to keep it out even after I offered to do a re-shoot. I know that would be a key part to the whole love story, and my next one I hope to come more prepared with the right questions to get the right kinds of responses.

SO - what I definitely need next time is a plan, instead of digging in, making a mess, and trying to fix it later.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

I am a mid-level wedding and event videographer, and my trusty GL2 needs to be put out to pasture. I am interested in the “film” look I have been seeing online with DLSR cameras, and am seriously looking at the Canon D60. A few concerns I am hoping people here can address for me.

Low Light: If I video it at a 1/30 shutter speed and use an on-camera light, can I avoid grainy videos? I was told if you get a lens with a large aperture you can get more light on the chip alos? I tried shooting with the Sony 1000 (shoulder mounted) and it was a disaster. Could never get good lowlight footage from it. And most of my events are in dark halls.

I will not shoot in HD, but DV. (Or is that SD?) How many minutes will I get at that resolution? I understand the FAT files will have a limit.

Do I have to convert the files to edit in iMovie HD or the newer version of it?

I do appreciate any feedback you can give me!

Does anyone have suggestions for on board camera lighting? I have been looking at the FloLight Microbeam. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it?

I have shot a few weddings and so far the lighting during the receptions has been a toss up of good to just terrible. The light on my camera isn't cutting it and I am slowly acquiring gear and I was wondering what some of you guys would suggest.

I think a lighting kit at a reception would be to cumbersome, distracting, and over kill. I want something portable that I can mount on the camera and works well. Thank you for your answers.

My question is this: are the songs played by a DJ service at a wedding usable in my wedding videos without violating the legal "rights" issue? I heard that if I use less than 30 seconds of the song, than there is no violation -- any comment on this?

Hello everybody,

Next week I will be traveling with about a dozen firefighters to New York to pick up a large piece of the World Trade Center from Hangar 17. We will be bringing it back to my hometown and there will be quite a large audience saluting it as the beam drives by and there will be a ceremony for it.

I know there is a right way and a wrong way to do documentaries, but this is my first, so advice is wanted!!

One of the important aspects about documentaries that I have no clue about is paper work. What kind of paperwork should I produce and have the firemen sign in order to protect my material? Where can I find a template for this sort of paper?

I know these sort of items pop up in the back pages of Videomaker, but I'm not about to go look at the back page of all of my videomakers for the off chance I might find something, when there is knowledge right here on this forum.

So I will be new to wedding videography. I'd like to call what I'm going to do, wedding cinematography. My question is as follows: In you experience as a wedding videographer which up-to-date camera would you recommend to make the possibilities for an event timeless, and capabilities and editing potentials jaw dropping. Because I do believe that the original quality of the video captures is significant, along with what media it is recorded on in conjunction with its ease of post production use and time consumption. Camera versatility is also a concern.

The cameras I'm currently looking at are the following please provide suggestions in these areas or freely from your experience. Sony HVR-Z7E, Sony PMW-EX3, Canon XLH1Sa.

I was catching up on my newspapers this morning and was reading an article about how to save money on your wedding. One of the suggestions was instead of hiring someone to do video to use a service called wedit. This was the first time I had heard of this service but the concept is they send you 5 hd flip cameras and you hand them to guests to use. You send them back and they edit.

On the pricing page they of course have different packages. On their top package $799 you get a highlight video with the song of your choice. I wonder if they have rights for that or maybe it is just a choice off of their list.

Anyway the concept is interesting but you could end up with a load of c... for your wedding video and still have spent several hundred dollars.

I'm trying to break into wedding and special event videography. I'm graduating high school next month and I would love to shoot a couple of weddings over the summer before I start college. I plan to major in business administration.

I have already shot my cousin's wedding two month's ago and everybody loved it. I shot it with a SONY DSR-2100 DV camcorder and edited it with Adobe Premiere Elements version 7. I burned the video to DVD on my Dell Win7 desktop pc. Everybody tells me that I have what it takes to start a home based video business and work myself through school.

For all the experienced wedding videographers out there, what advice would you give an aspiring event videographer? Is there any good books or reference material geared for an 18 year old like me? Although I have shot a wedding, most of my experience is covering school projects and my own families special occasions. How can I market myself and get my first paying gig?

After getting laid off from work last year, I got the courage to start shooting wedding videos professionally. I have been shooting videos as a hobby all my life but I never knew how I could generate income with it.

I just found a great reference that coaches you on everything you need to get started in videotaping weddings and other special events. Its available as a Kindle ebook.

http://www.amazon.com/Photography-Videography-Business-Shoestring-ebook/dp/B004OA6EUM/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

I used the book's sample advertising and advertised in my local Sunday paper and after one month, I got 3 bookings.

Hi everybody,

Just a few words as introduction - I am quite active in photography, and also in wedding photography field. For having more flexibility during wedding photo sessions and for not being dependent from (sometimes not very optimal) ligt conditions, I recently decided to purchase a video light - and the light of my choice was Lowell id light.

May I please ask your experience with this light ? Are there any particular point // point of attention I should be aware of ?

Also, as a part of my order, there was a battery I decided to acquire - as compared to the initially suggested battery-belt (with the total cost of over EUR 700), I went for less flexible solution for the beginning consisting in buying normal accus - in form of a quite compact box weighting 4 kg for around EUR 60 - but may be you are aware of more flexible // optimal not expensive solutions ?

Many thanks in advance for your answers,

Irina

I'm trying to follow the advice of an ebook "Start Up A Photography or Videography Business On A Shoestring".

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004OA6EUM

The advice is that for covering weddings and other events, the camcorder should have in-camera edits. The in-camera editing features should help minimize post production editing.

The authors recommend the Sony DSR-250 which has a fade-to-black, various wipe transitions, and a digital dissolve. Since this camcorder is standard definition, is there another camcorder with the same or similar in-camera editing features, but in HD?

Thanks, Sam

I am getting into my 2nd full year now of weddings, and am trying to start really improving every detail of what I am doing. I just upgraded my DVD printer to something with much more creative control in the design software, and ordered up some glossy discs. The end results blow me away, and now cringe when I think of what I was handing to couples last year.

Now that I have the discs looking much more professional, I want to start getting into improving the case design. I have been using a slightly modified template feom Sure Thing, but to be honest the end result looks pretty basic and cheesy and is not cutting it. Almost to the point where I would rather just hand the couple discs in the white envelopes (which is how our own wedding was handed to us and we paid over $4000 for our video). Does anyone have in mind any great DVD case ideas/software etc?

Or does anyone use any cases other than the standard black DVD case? I know there are some pretty decorative cases out there, but they come at a premium and would almost rather sell that to the couple straight up as a separate cost. But are there any other formats anyone might use for distributing the discs?
