I think 10 minutes file length is sufficient to record event video. If you record long wedding ceremony and you don't want to interrupt the audio, record audio separately on a recorder and use a b-roll in post to connect video files. Canon 7D has up to 4gb file length that translate to about 12-14 min. If you don't mind to mix camera manufacturer Nikon D7000 has 20 min file length.

I shoot wedding and Bar Mitzvah videos. I am transitioning over to a DSLR (Canon D60) camera for my projects. However, for Bar Mitzvah services, and longer wedding services, I need a camera that can last longer than the 10 min. file size. It would also be my backup camera. I use a Canon GL2 now, and I would like something that uses a card and costs around $1000. I would hate to get something expensive now and then kick myself as the next generation DSLR came out. Any suggestions?

When I got married back in 2006, I hired a guy from Craigslist to shoot my wedding for $300. He met me and showed me his work and it was really good. Steady shooting and smooth moves. Wireless mic and tripod. No table interviews because I didnt want them. Anyway, it was a bargain. I wasnt going to pay someone for editing my wedding when I know I could do it better and do it the way I wanted it. Er, the way WE wanted it.

I never used the Sony cameras for filming wedding video but I've used the EX3 and EX1 for other events. Both camera performed reasonably well in low light. But they are both ouf your budget.

I have used the JVC GY series for weddings. These camera a great. The best part is professional Fujinon lens. It's probably the best lens I've used.

I use DSLRs for weddings as they are cheaper and produce great image quality event in low light. Why don't you want to use DSLR? Also for the money you could get two DSLRs. Two cameras is essential to film weddings.

I offer a wedding filming service which lets my clients to edit themselves the wedding video. I talk over about the potential pitfalls and warn the clients that they may not be able to edit a professional looking video themselves. Once they understand that I have no problems to give the footage to them as long as they don't say that the edit was done by me. Also editing tools are becoming more user friendly (iMovie) so if somebody is passionate to edit themselves they could potentially achieve a good results.

However, I also offer to edit later if the client decides to the that.

Lastly this is a cheaper option for the clients.

I hardly use lights as I believe they are intrusive to the wedding and the atmosphere is changed. To compensate the lack of light I use fast lenses such as 1.8 F or a DSLR with good low light capability such Canon 5D MK2 or Sony NEX5N.

Thanks, I am just trying to gather information about all of this. In 2012 I am going to make a serious attempt at creating a business around doing video for all sorts of events. I, much like WSanford, have thus far only worked on stuff for the web, so file size has not been a big deal, but I think about the possibility of doing a few weddings for some $$ right away, and I wanted to know what people are delivering these days. These are a lot of great ideas. Very much appreciated.

HDD, thumbs, BD, online, depending on size, structure and money.

As birdcat says, you can use DVD for smaller projects.

What's more interesting, you may write your HD work on a DVD not only as a file.

You may create a Blu-ray project with a menu, export it to an .iso file and burn it on a blank DVD. It will play with full functionality on standart BD players and, of course on any comp as well.

A lot of finished product I do now is intended for the net so that takes care of itself. Doing a lot more FTP or yousendit type than sending drives or discs right now. However, if the projects were longer that would likely be the way to go.

You can also get 8.5GB on a DL DVD so you can deliver HD as .M2V files that way as well (if they'e small enuf).

Most of my clients who want HD however, want BD or online delivery (YouTube, Vimeo, etc...).

I personally think the jury is still out on BluRay disc delivery, what with most home systems having uprez capabilities and even 4:3 SD footage not looking half bad in the viewing, except of course for the purists among us.

However, I suspect that HD deliver on a hard drive would prove cheaper, on average, than setting up and delivering on a thumb drive based on cost per GB. I wrote a blog article about delivering on thumb drives, particularly the high costs of ordering custom branded thumb drives for distribution, noting that while it might have a certain "wow" factor, the practicality and economics sucked. But that old opinionated me.

If you've read many of my offerings on the forums you know I continue to experience decent business levels while still offering SD production, though I intend to move into HD ... but still do not get much demand for it from my event and individual clients, and I can rent units when doing commercial work that requires it. Even then I usually deliver to commercial clients on hard drive, factoring in the costs.

But, if/when BluRay becomes a demand item in my preferred market area I certainly believe that it is probably most economical to simply use, burn and deliver on BluRay disks to the end client ... all things considered.

I have not had to do this yet, but as I get more into event recording I am sure I will have to deliver HD video. It seems to me that burning Blu-Ray is very expensive. I have seen videographers put the files on Flash Drives and deliver them that way, I wanted to know how people in this forum are delivering finished HD content to clients, and what one would charge.

The camera alone isn't THAT distracting. Distraction, other than someone coming in with enough gear and harness stuff, crew, lights on stands, and more, to look like Robocop and his entourage that's distracting. A professional, operating an ENG unit who knows how to handle such a rig without personally appearing to be an ENG (or dudess) working for a local station shouldn't be worried.

Hey, i have a GY-HM700U JVC camcorder. Im going to a pretty low key 23 or 25 person wedding reception and wanted to know if it would be overkill to bring that. The alternative would be an unconventional DSLR (canon t2i 550d). I'm thinking just to take the ENG because the DSLR would be way to hard to focus, etc.

I found out you can warm up video a lot better in After Effects using Mojo and Collorista, once it is finished I will post a link. Don, I took your advice and removed the intro, I am so used to doing corporate and testimonial work that it is second nature anymore. I want to thank everyone for their input on this as it will surely help in future projects if the needs arise. When I get a second camera, I man even try a wedding, still leery about that realm of the business though as I have been doing mainly corporate for 2 years now.

Mary Ann: For a first attempt, Charles, I thought it was very good. I liked the cutaways, helped make the video that much more interesting. I kind of agree that some instrumental background music could help support the emotion of their narrative. The length, FOR THEM, is fine. Especially knowing your feelings about providing this special production for her with Joshua going to Afghanistan. All-in-all, good job Charles.

Earl: Charles, we watched BEFORE reading the input from Shaun, didn't want it to flavor (if it could) our perspective. I agree wholeheartedly with what Mary Ann said.

I also noted that you had many areas where backlight, or bright background caused problems with detail of faces, etc. I know this can be a bother. And I wondered about the color, so heavily leaning toward cyan. I'm partial to cool colors and not THAT fond of hot and heavy on the reds, or too warm, but believe a bit of warming up could help the flesh tones as much as anything.

I know the many challenges that come with putting together a love story and I also know that with the quality of audio and narrative such as your production has, it is nearly impossible to not please the couple. THEY are the ones who count, for the rest of us it's the technical stuff ;-)

Finally, I personally would have liked seeing MORE cutaways to other creative shots, but I also can relate to running out of them. I nearly never have enough to carry me through more than a song-length production.

So, my 2-cents? Warmer color, use backgrounds that aren't so bright (find bushes, barns, trees, etc. that will not create such open bright background to contend with), and some kind of mood music to complement the narrative.

Well done. Good job and NO WAY with what you captured were Joshua and Melissa going to be disappointed. They would have had to love it.

One thing I do differently than you (there is no right and wrong) is the intro... I make these primarily for the couple, so there is no need to start off with the "Hi, I'm Joe So-and-so" and "Hi I'm Jane Doe...." type intro... I start off with a couple Ken Burns pans off the baby and child to highschool montage photos... him as a baby as she starts off saying "Hi I'm Jane Doe, and I met Joe So-and-so at..." then her baby photos to high school photos as he intros himself and talks about how he met her and fell in love.... The photo montages really seem to be a hit with my clients.... but like I said... it doesn't make one way better than the other... I just feel like the intro on your video, feels like it is meant for a general audience, rather than an intimate talk about them to each other and thier families and close friends... does that make sense to you?

Thanks BL, usually I work in studios and not in natural light. The project was started 2 hours later than it was supposed to be and the sun was very hot at that time. I thought about shortening the video to 5 minutes but wanted this length because Joshua is headed for Afghanistan and and what he will be doing is very dangerous, he is the guy on the outside of the humves. More for her than anyone else, just in case something goes wrong over there.

The last wedding I did was the couple from hell.

I can laugh about it now.

They got divorced in one year.

I admit sometimes you can tell by the tone of just an email how difficult a couple will be to work with. But you also cannot just judge a book by it's cover. One bride-to be sounded a tad picky via email but nothing extreme. Once she sent me the contract (she preferred to set everything up solely by email which I really do not mind) the contract was so picked apart with notes etc that I was scared to death to head to the shoot. Come to find out she was an attorney which explained a lot! She ended up being one of my best clients.

There are brides though that you just get that gut feeling the way everything is worded and how much they want to twist around what you have to offer that they will be more work than it is worth when it comes to the wedding day. Sometimes I just throw in the towel and tell them I am already booked. I always offer to meet - but so many are tech crazy these days that I do not deny email only consultations and this comes with a down side.

I love weddings. I'm a wedding videographer and my wife is a wedding photographer. Our lives are about weddings, it's our passion!! We love what we do and we mostly have fantastic couples to work with and can make a lot of money doing what we do!!

Our clients pick us for our approach and style and we in turn have to like them in order to work with them. i have no problem turning a couple away if I feel they are going to be difficult to work with. As a story teller I can't make their wedding something it's not. I can only use whats around me and what unfolds on the day.

The way we keep weddings fresh is by filming lots of different types. We film & photograph english weddings, indian weddings, greek weddings, sikh wedding, chinese weddings and many more. I love variety which I think is a real key to continue enjoying what we do.

But we love the satisfaction of telling someones story of their wedding day in a creative and emotional way and them loving it and sharing it with all their friends and family. Very satisfying!!

Thanks for sharing. I think it's pretty good for a first attempt. However, there are 3 main areas to think about with regards to improving the overall impact.

1) Video Length

10:22 is very long for a love story and I think it could be condensed. But the final use will dictate this. Is the video just for the couple or do they want to share this with others? If it's just for them then fine - but others will struggle to keep their full attention. I would aim for 5 mins max. nice and snappy

2) Background Music

Have you considered adding some instrumental music to the background? Music adds so much emotion and helps keep the viewers attention. Think it is really missing this and will benefit hugely for some carefully chosen music.

3) Video Colours

The colours are very cold (blue) and this definitely needs some attention. just needs to be warmed up.

Hope this helps

This is my first stab at doing a love story and would like your feedback as I value it greatly from everyone here on Videomaker. Be honest and sincere, I have pretty thick skin. The couple really likes it. I was wondering if I should put an elegant start screen on it to open or announce the video, what is your opinion? Thanks in advance.
