Hi there

Bought Sony Vegas Movie Studio today to edit some pre-shot footage.

The problem is we're amateurs and when we shot the scenes, the were occasions at various points (which we didn't notice during filming!) where a stray car or person appeared at the sides of the shot.

We want to keep the shots (as they were good takes) but what's the best way to eliminate (or hide) the unwanted bits - can we erase or blur the edges of the scene, maintaining focus on the main shot?

Thanks

Can any one help me how I can convert video clips to frames using premier or whatever?

I am trying to use it as a background image of my 3D animation (Houdini)

I'd appreciate it if any one can post an example file or video showing step by step procedure.

WOW! You're a genius at restoration! Those have to be better quality than the original VHS ever was. That is really excellent work.

trushar30: The RT.X2, in my opinion, made HD editing really possible for the first time on a PC. It was a fairly complicated thing to use, but Matrox offered incredibly good customer service and timely upgrades. Unfortunately, the card apparently is not suitable for 64 bit Win7 systems. Matrox did offer a 64 bit software load, but it did not include the large number of very fine effects and presets that the original load included.

According to their CS forum, the new PPRO offered the ability to do the same thing without their effects. They missed the boat on that. True, it is possible to duplicate the effects, but not nearly as convenient as the Matrox software. That's important for me because everything is about ease and speed. If I can click one button and get an effect, that's what I want.

Oh well, it's no use crying over old software.

At this point it would be a good idea to consult the "Help" menu and print out the documentation file associated with the software and have a read.

Vegas Pro is an extremely powerful program, intuitive in many ways, but it does require a bit of effort on the user's part to discover how it works.

Some really excellent advice, and as you can see from the advice there is really no way to make better what is not there. In the 1990's the son of a studio owner/producer from Texas lived in this area, he made 4 short features that he sent back to his dad to get professional edited and produced. That son now owns his own company. But to continue. He made several copies of the shorts, over time through fire, flood, mold and misuse it was believe ALL of the were lost or destroyed. Even the master tapes were destroyed. I sat out on an epic adventure to find all four copies, and low and behold I did, under beds and on unlabeled VHS tapes. I spent MONTHS capturing them to my computer and doing all I could to enhance them. One tape was so badly damaged it had to be disassembled and "unfolded" to capture another was covered with mold, I soaked it in Dawn dish-washing liquid, unwound it by hand in the liquid and rinsed it in cold water then left it in a dehumidifier for 4 weeks. I captured it.

In the end I spent about 6 months on the project. Was it worth it? See for yourself...below

But yes, these were the ONLY existing copies of a work that would have been forever lost. The producer/director released the works to me for nonprofit use. But all ended up with DVD's from them. I use a Analog capture card with every feature I can to enhance them, I have a DVD/VCR connected it to. I then bring the digital file into my video editing software to scrub them, but if the information is not there is just is not there, in several cases the audio was destroyed and I had to "add back" what might have been there. In the end the project came out as good as one can hope. But for old VHS tapes their is NO way to do it unless you use EarlC method VHS to DVD that is cost effective. Every other way is time consuming and cost counter productive to make money off of.

Here are the 4 finished VHS to Digital Captures with about 6 months of enhancements.

Ryan, enjoyed your video. Lots of nice effects displayed. I don't know what the normal time length for this type of music video. I might have prefered a 2 minute or so length, again just my preference. As far as the video camera suggestions: for $500 or less you will be in the consumer level of cam. You can get excellent results with these as long as you understand and use good lighting, framing, etc. Lots of practice shooting video is the best way to learn. As your skill and experience increases, you will be better able to pick out the features that you want in the next level of cam (prosumer to professional). If you are willing to consider buying used equipment, you should be able to find some more expensive ($1000 and up) cams with more features for the price you stated. I won't give too many specific suggestions for make/model of cam. I personally use Sony sr-11 (sr-12 same but with larger hard drive storage). It produces good images and has a suitable number of the features that I wanted. Some features you should look for: external microphone plug, earphone plug, as many manual features as possible, full Hd capable (1080i, some prefer 1080p), larger sensor- 1/3" (you probably won't find larger sensors than you are now using). If you search these forums you can find lots of suggestions for video cameras and a lot of them will be in your price range especially if you look at the used market. A good reference point to start with would be bhphoto, check out their used equipment, also check ebay etc. As always with used stuff, buyer beware. Keep shooting.

Earl, All,

I agree, VHS to HD is a not a great idea. These videos are philosophical lectures and could benifit largely within our vast family.

I want to enhance them, and it does not have to be in HD, just want to get some color correction, cut down audio noise to be able to hear clearly. These videos are from early 80's.

This is the reason I want to process the videos, then make DVDs. If the video quality was not degraded, all the suggestions as to going from VHS to DVD using computer or VCR/DVD combo make sense.

Thanks for all comments...keep it going. I am learning from the pros like you!

As Earl said, lots of pain going from SD to HD, especially from VHS source.

There is a package called Instant HD (http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/magic-bullet-instant-hd/) from Red Giant that can help but bottom line is you cannot create data accurately where none existed before.

As far as what you're doing, you might want to just buy a combo VCR/DVD recorder (I got one by Sony at Costco for $100) which copies VHS tapes to DVDs by just a button click and finalize. Not perfect but saved me a huge amount of time.

Hi,

Set your camera in manual mode to avoid auto focus. before adjust the white balance. I use manual mode, manual focus. Lith the green screen about 15 degres angle on both side. Talent is about 6 to 9 feet in front of your screen. Lith the Talent with 2 light at 45 degrees one light is the main light the other about 50% compare to main that we call the fill light. The third light is rear to the talent about 300 watts or less to hit the head and shoulder.

Use your software and learn to use the parameter to obtain transparency (pixel range and softness.

domineaux, I can't help too much with your already shot audio/ video stuff. But I think that the camcorder that you use 'HDR12' (is it HDR sr-12?) has a zoom microphone feature (goes from 'surround sound' to focused stereo) that might be switched to eliminate the bucket sound. I have the sr-11 and in the 'surround sound mode' (default) picks up a lot of ambient sound from all directions. Switching to zoom microphone concentrates the sound pickup from the scene zoomed in on. Hope that makes sense. Next shoot try test recording with zoom/no-zoom and hear if that makes any difference. As far as blank posts occuring on this forum, I have found that when I use my newer laptop with Windows 7 and IE when I try to post (send post) a window pops up asking me if I want to leave this page. If I click yes, I get a blank post. I click no and then click send post again then when the same window pops up again, I click Yes. This time I get my post to go through. Don't know if that is what is happening to your posts or not. Hope this helps. Keep shooting.

Everyone else is doing it so I guess I will:

Name: Gregory D. Watts
Age: 44
Sex: Male
Married: Yep (24 years)
Kids: 2 Boys 1 Girl (passed)

Got interested in photography at about 9 (Not by Choice) Took an interest in it later as documentation. At 14 had the chance of a lifetime. I was living in Salpulpa Oklahoma and "Rumble Fish" was being filmed. Francis acquired the use of my cousins flat for the apartment in the movie, which allowed my sister an me to get onto the set. I fell in love with watching Francis direct. I fell in love with the action behind the camera. A young and upcoming actor on the set fell for my sister, so we both got non-speaking parts. We spent the entire shooting time on the set everyday until the movie was completed in that area. It was enough for me to fall in love with the back end of the camera.

A year later I had the chance to work on "The Crucible Key", poor movie, budget issues, control issues, but I learned a lot even if it was never seen. I soon started shooting my own movies, which lead me to where I am today.

I run Tasana Studios a part of Tasana Services. I shoot more for fun and personal enjoyment. I enjoy exploring the dark emotional issues of life, loss, failed hopes, unattained dreams, death, (but not these goth type people) I am working on a movie now that I will post later to give the idea. Real life type stuff, not the riding off into the sunset with the girl in arms, but real stuff. Serious issues. I have never enjoyed making comedy. Make then cry I say. (One should not write this on 2 hours sleep.)

I thought I introduce myself after all this time, who knew? Anyway...

I'm Luis O. Maymí from Puerto Rico, currently owner of a corporation called "Xeneuxe" which dedicates to video production, mostly for the web, Internet marketing services and among other programing relating things. I'm an Adobe fan and I have been using all Adobe Creative Suite Production Premium programs since CS4. Although I know how to use Sony Vegas Pro and Final Cut Pro 7, I prefer Adobe because I can't imagine working without After Effects, Photoshop and Premiere at the same time. I'm a dedicate and passionate person, always willing to learn something new that can help me grow. I can be a little ambitious when is time to work and I don't know how to stop unless I finish my projects. As a business owner I strongly believe  in my team members and I'm always open to work together so we can all get to the finish line. I expect great results from everyone because each have something to share with the world. In general I'm a passionate working person that likes establishing goals no matter what the circumstances are. Personally I like listening to people stories (that why I join Video Storytellers), I have basic knowledge in martial arts (Aikido) and I'm open to learn new things that will make me better than I was yesterday.
My motto is:
"The meaning of a movie are the characters, the life of the movie is the music, but the magic is in the editing"

Hi, I'm Greg. I've been a commercial photographer for 40+ years. I
am 1 of the first shooters to bring digital photography into the studio
over 23 years ago. in the 70s & 80s I used to shoot cinema &
video for commercial & documentary production. I found I didn't
have enough time to do both still & cinema so, as my passion was
still, cinema & video went to the sidelines.

My wife of almost
40 years passed away & I semi-retired. This has given me the time
to get back into video. The introduction of large format chips for
video now gives videographers to finally get that film look, instead of
the old up against the wall, soap feel. Much better.

I have
been involved with many world wide forums & find them very helpful
& informative. Look forward to seeing what everyone has to say
& hope some of you can help when I may need it

James, have you tried different settings in ND3? I believe that for sunrise shooting you will need to add an external ND filter (the AX2000 use 72mm filters). External ND filters are really expensive (at least the good ones), so I suggest to start a new forum threat asking about sunrise shooting and what settings and filters others use with their camcorders. Also (if you don't have one) I suggest you buy a UV Filter to protect your camcorder lens from UV sun rays, dust, scratches and even bugs (funny story that one). They are around $30 to $60. Your AX2000 need some love you know :-)

If you're into action, sports, extreme events, then I'd take a look at the GoPro Hero 2, it has its limitations but if you do a bit of research here and on Google, you'll see some awesome stuff being produced by enthusiasts.

Trushar, I'm personally not so sure that converting VHS sources to HD is a good choice/decision. I think you're taking on a LOT more aggravation and trouble by doing so. I personally convert my VHS resources to DVD after first making .mov files of them after importing. Many people for whom I've converted VHS resources have home entertainment systems with VHS and/or DVD players that uprez them with a decent result on their big screen TVs. I personally think that attempting to go from a basic VHS resolution or quality then digitally manipulating the files by ANY means or method in order to render it a HD file is often going to result in a lesser quality rather than greater quality video.

I have the new Sony HDR 560 CV

I am trying to shoot a dark subject indoors with a green screen background. I have to back light for no shadows. No matter how much light I put on the subject (a puppet) it looks dark. I have plenty of lighting. Should i be bouncing the light of off white boards, or umbrellas or direct is OK. I thought these cameras are so good in low light. This isn't even low light.

I'm using auto settings. Could that be messing me up. Should I go into
Manuel settings and is there a preset for indoors and is using a green
screen adding more issues. I know there is information on the instruction
Manuel, but nothing about using a green screen backdrop that has to be
lit to avoid shadows when the subject is moving.

Thank you very much Jaimie, Eric and Don. I just purchased Adobe Premier Production.. It's in the mail.. waiting for it.

Jaimie, I did not know what RT.x2 was, I looked it up, and found a great capture device, the devices that I have tried are from Bestbuy with RCA-to-USB connections. This would improve the capture quality a lot. I will buy one(<strong style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">Matrox MXO2 Mini, or similar) and try it.

Once it arrives, I will try to edit each VHS one by one and save it as mp4 or mpeg2 in HD format.

Thanks again!

If you want to apply the same FX to multiple clips, copy the first one, click the next one, right-click and select "Paste Event Attributes". This works if you select multiple clips as well.

You can create plug-in strings, and go to each clip and add. This allows multiple effects to be copied to any clip or track.

You can also add effects to the TRACK and it will affect all clips on that track.
