This is a very tough problem. I fixed it once a while back by adjusting the timing (speed) of the video to match the separately recorded sound. It might help to cut the clip into a few smaller pieces and sync each separately by slightly lengthening or shortening the video or the separate sound track slightly and then putting them back together. It didn't work great, but it was acceptable. I found that it was easier to adjust the video speed because sound distortion showed up very quickly.

I learned my lesson, now I never use separately recorded sound unless I'm sure the recorder's timing is as good as the camcorder's.

" 1) way to sync sound from Zoom H2

2) way to remove the bucket sound "

Your statement about sync needs a little claification. Are you able to find a spot where the H2 can be put in sync with the camera audio, and then it drifts out of sync? If so, by how much over time? Fairly rapid sync drift is an indication that the H2 recording has the wrong sampling rate. About 8 to 10 video frames accumulated drift over a time span of ten minutes would indicate that there's a pull-down ( 29.97 frames per second ) discrepency. Slower drift is due to looser tolerances between the H2 and the camera's time base references. I don't know what sample rate your H2 audio was recorded at, but it MUST be 48K in order to stay in close proximity to the camera audio. If it is NOT 48K, you might be able to find a feature in your extended software collection which will allow you to convert it to 48K.

As for the " bucket " sounding audio from your camera . . . . ?? Does this effect materialize ONLY on the shoot in question? Have you checked the camera since then to see if the effect persists? Obviously, if it persists, you may have a component ( mic ? ) failure. If it's only on the video in question, then it sounds to me like you had sound from two different sources getting mixed together, one being a few digital samples out of sync with the other, and there's a phasing situation causing comb filtering. Think back to your shoot and re-create in your mind's eye how different, unwanted sound sources may have intruded.

I spent another couple hours with the zoomh2 and still no good.

There is no reason for it not to sync. I'm using sony vegas pro 11 for edit. The recording speed is set in stone, when I make selection in ZoomH2. I just don't see how it can be out of sync. Something about the pairing and settings in Vegas Pro is going to be my focus.

I am thinking to try various record combinatons in Zoom H2 to see, if that may have something to do with it.

The zoom h2 is the best especially in locations where I have no ability to compensate for audio bounce and reverb off hard room surfaces, tile floors or no other sound dampening (drapes, etc)

I really appreciate the pointers. I have learned by having purchased so many software that my problems mostly cannot be solved by new software, especially when I have made quality software purchases.

The major obstacle to the software chase is the learning threshold for new software eats up your life and time.

You could try PluralEyes to help you sync the audio http://www.singularsoftware.com/pluraleyes.html - you can download a trial version. I am not affiliated but have used it and it works well most of the time. However as cfxcorp said you can usually sync by getting it somewhere near looking at the whole waveform and then zooming in to a specific peak and trimming. Then play both tracks and adjust a small amount until there is no echo.

I also had a Zoom H2 and found that it does not keep sync properly with the video - there is plenty of stuff on the internet about this problem. Mine is about 0.004% slow which mounts up if you video is more than a few minutes. Also the difference varies with the audio format (much worse on MP3). I made a test recording of one hour using the 'speaking clock' and checked the drift. Then compensate - I found the best way was to remove a single frame from the video every few minutes to correct.

I now use Roland recorders which are spot on.

The syncing is always challenging, did you try zooming in on the waveforms and matching them visually?

Also, checkout http://www.izotope.com - their Nectar product - and http://www.bias-inc.com for some great audio tweaking tools. Both offer many presets and can be stand-alone or plug-ins to your NLE. Nectar is on sale for $199 and there is a consumer-grade product for $39 that looks promising. Bias' offers SoundSoap for $129.00

I thought most audio mixers had a mic output as well, allowing source in to go to the camcorder mic input at the proper levels. Mine does, but it is a Studiomaster, but my cheap RadioShack mixer also has both mic/line.

This is what I was looking for too as I wanted to record music performances for cheap with good sound quality by providing directly the mixer output to the video recorder, but has been out of luck. I tried using a Cannon HF-R200 camcorder with the audio output from a Behringer 801 mixer and that didn't work, except some kind of humming sound. I could connect the audio output from my macbook and could record music with video. I was searching in google and found this adaptor at Amazon. May be worth a try using with the mixer. Let me know if any of you try this one out.

I have several software... Pinnacle, Sony Vegas PRo 11, magix music maker. I don't have an ACID, but I do have a soundforge and audacity.

I made a video recording with my ZoomH2 and also the Sony HDR12 camcorder. When making the video. The video is great, and cannot be redone. The sound recorded by the camcorder sounds like the actor is in a bucket.

The sound from the Zoom H2 is excellent, but I cannot get the sound to sync. I've spent couple hours trying. I get very close, but not close enough to make a decent presentation

I was thinking... the actor is speaking clear enough and understandable enough in the Camcorder recorded sound, but the bucket sound is just too obnoxious.

Any suggestions for either

1) way to sync sound from Zoom H2

2) way to remove the bucket sound

Quote"

My second problem is the the H2 Zoom audio recording, that I had connected to the mixer's rec out connection using an RCA cable, parts of it sound distorted to me... I even had the damn thing set on "Limited 1 (general) which is suppose to prevent this. Anyways is there anything I can do to prevent this in the future? I don't have a lot of control over the sound engineer whos on the mixer. He's pretty much going to make it as loud as possible for everyone. Especially the main voice."

Without knowing what the mixer was, or what outputs you used to take the signal from it, the problem is likely to be that the mixer was outputting a +4 pro level signal, and you are trying to record to a -10 level recorder. It will overload the recorder's inputs.

To avoid this, try and find some -10 line outputs from the mixer. Aux sends, (if there are any spares) may be ok, or it may have a monitor output that sends a lower level signal. Headphone/ control room outs are also a possbility. If there aren't any you will need to find some way of padding the signal.

budguy 68, a) use h2 audio, b) use camera audio, c) fix a) or fix b). I would suggest c). Two ways to go: 1) try to get rid of the distortion ( h2 audio) in the singer's voice by using some audio software or 2) bump up the strength of the audio (in camera audio). 1) If you let us know what audio software you are using, perhaps someone familiar with that software can give you specific instructions. 2) You might try copying your audio track and pasting the copy on another audio track below the original, if your nle software allows that or opening a copy of the audio track in your audio software and boosting it there and then bring it back to your nle. As far as using the H2 in a similar situation, others here have posted suggestions about this. They suggest not hooking the H2 directly to the sound man's setup. They placed their H2 in the'sweetspot' in front of the speakers. I'm not sure how you determine this spot but I guess monitoring with headphones while the band is warming up. I have never had my videocamera show this type of vibration with the bass. The only thing I can suggest is to keep away from the force of the speakers if possible, experimenting while the band is warming up. I know being a one-man-show while shooting video is tough but if you can move from one cam to the other using one to catch audience reactions while the music is playing or sert up one cam to catch the audience from the front. This would give you some b-roll to add in to cover when something like the bass vibration occurs. Keep shooting.

A band had hired me to film them performing at a bar. I used my cannon XH-1As for close ups and my HF-M41 for wide. I also had my H2 Zoom Audio recorder connected directly to the Mixer. But I ran into problems on post production lol...

For one the Bass drum was causing my whole Tripod to vibrate thus parts of the video go fuzzy whenever the bass drum hits... Is there a way to prevent this from happening in the future? I had a $100 tripod raised up to 72 inches which I had to raise all the way up to look over the crowd. I never had this happen to me before. Its supper annoying and very head ache causing...

EarlC and Mark, I had the problem with the Polar Bear in the snowstorm. One of the other posters suggested a solution that worked. When I would try to post a window would pop up asking if I wanted to leave the page. If I clicked on yes I would have a blank post on this site. Someone suggested that when the window popped up to click on not leaving the page and then click send post again and this time click on leave the page. This worked! Not sure if it is from new notebook (PC) or EI or virus protection (Norton). All I know is this worked.

Hello,

Thanks for valuable information. I will
begin my tests very soon. I would appreciate an additional little help. To record
interviews I intend to use an “lavalier microphone” plugged in the external
recorder (Panasonic). Besides that, I think I will need other microphone type
to record background narration/locution (using my voice). In this case, what would
be a good microphone to plug in the laptop to take my narration voice? Ps.: My
laptop doesn't has any dedicated audio board; just an audio chipset Realtek (http://www.realtek.com/products/productsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=27&Level=5&Conn=4&ProdID=166).

Best,

Cadu, as Compostie1 said, you can use Movie Studio to sync up your audio off of your audio recorder. Lay your video from the cam on the time line with it's audio below it. Add the audio from your recorder on the audio track below that and use the spikes from the clapper to help in shifting the lower audio track to align it with the audio track from the camcorder. Once you have done this mute the camcorders audio track and play the video to check the sync. Clicking 'Solo' on the lower audio track will accomplish the same thing for the sync check on playback. Once you have it synced to your satisfaction, you unlink the camcorder's audio/video tracks and delete the audio leaving you with one audio track which is insync and hopefully great audio for your great video. The audio software that comes with Movie Studio is pretty good for basic functions and is pretty easy to use. It does a good job of cleaning up your audio. Click on your audio clip and open in the soundsoftware to clean up and save a copy of your cleaned-up version. Add this new version to the time line in the same way as before and eliminate the 'unclean' and voila. On thing that I forgot to mention, after you sync the audio clip from the recorder, trim it so that either it's begining or end is exactly the same as the video clip so that if you need to replace it with a clean clip or have to move the video clip around on your timeline you can easily snap the audio back into sync. Hope my explanation helps. Keep shooting.

Cadu,

Short and sweet, with the software you already have (Vegas Studio) you'll be able to do sync audio. You'll need preferably a digital audio recorder like the Zoom H1 with your camcorder. you'll start them (hopefully at the same time) and then you'll do an 'Audio slate' while both devices are recording. Say at minimum the project name, location name/interviewee name and date then use a 'Clapper' if you've got one or snap your fingers in front of the lens. You can use that and the peak in the audio waveform in the audio track to sync up your video and audio in the timeline. That's pretty much it.

Make sure you use a fuzzy muff over your recorder and when using a handheld recorder, take the setting off 'Auto Levels' if you can. Doing those two things will help you get cleaner sound that isn't too hot.

Hello,

I intend to produce an amateur documentary and
the only camcorder I have available is a simple JVC GZ-HM30 (http://www.trustedreviews.com/jvc-everio-gz-hm30sek_Camcorder_review).

So, I am looking for alternative ways to
capture audio with quality, once this cam doesn't have input to external microphone.
I intend to record audio in three different situations: (a) indoor interviews;
(b) outdoor interviews; (c) general audio from external environment.

I was wondering if it is possible to capture
audio through an IC recorder and to make synchronization with video through
edit software (Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 11). I have an Panasonic RR-US551 (http://shop.panasonic.com/shop/model/RR-US551)
which has input to external microphone. The questions are:

a) Which could be the type/model of
external microphone to use together this IC recorder (considering the different
situations mentioned before)? It would be a reasonable solution to my capture
audio with quality? Is there other one?

b) Through audio software (as Sound Forge not professional version), is it possible to improve the audio quality (even the audio recorded from the JVC GZ-HM30 camcorder)?

Thanks indeed in advance,

Domineaux, glad to hear back from you. Yes the H2 works great as a stand alone mic. The 'presence' that you get using the front and back mics is great. I shoot with the sr-11 and find that the onboard microphones also give good results. They can give you something similar if you don't switch to the zoom setting. In the zoom setting, the pickup of distant subjects audio in enhanced as you zoom in on the lens. I have found the it is realitively easy to join audio from two sources while using Sony's software by using the mute or solo function on each track to compare and sync them. Keep shooting.

Sorry it has taken so long to respond on this. I didn't have it notify me so I moved onto other things.

The Azden mic is a very competent wireless lapel mic. I have used it quite abit, but the bucket sound is still there indoors. Outdoors it is pretty well a good go. The Azden is redundant if you use it as first level input to Zoom H2 and has nowhere near the quality of H2. I do think unless you have a video editor like a Sony,Pinnacle or other good editor you might not be able to sync recorded sound with your video as you like it.

Now...I only use the Zoom H2 indoors, which has 4 mics in the recorder unit. The part about recorder may seem a bit confusing to readers, but the way it sets up and all with inputs and outputs it is a regular workhorse. I prefer the H2 over the Azden, in almost all instances. I just wish I'd known about it sooner.

I just use it like I would a mic when I make videos. The sound is very good. It has the screw hole in the bottom so you can use it with boom mic, handle, etc.

The Zoom h2 isn't very user friendly until you have spent some time working with it. I have to re-read the manual almost every time I use it. The settings can be important and I don't always recall best settings.  Some of the buttons are multipurpose and have hard to remember sequences. Kinda like some digital watches I've owned. I had a Ironman watch and I had to read the docs everytime I changed day light savings. LOL

Â

Â

Â

Â

After my last post I checked the specifications for the Azden wireless mic on the following link http://www.azdencorp.com/new/product.php?productid=93400

I noticed the following specification: All receivers and transmitters in the "PRO" Series are on the same 2 frequencies (169.445MHz and 170.245MHz).

In Australia those 2 frequencies are in the existing broadcast bands for our TV stations and two way radio equipment, its use would result in heavy RF interference in a audio recording using that equipment.

If the Azden brand is sold in the US then they must be OK to use in the Us without any external RF interference.

Given the circumstances you describe for your recording, including your now access to a known type wireless lapel mic transmitter and receiver. I would opt to mic up the presenter with the radio mic (be sure to use new long lasting batteries in both both units) and wire the receiver straight to the camera (from link diagram it appears as if your wireless receiver has an existing lead with 3.5mm on each end will plug straight into camera.

Additionally the wireless receiver featured in your link, has an ear socket that will allow you to monitor boththe audio quality and level, with headphones throughout the recording.

The only other trick is to ensure the mic does not rub on the presenters clothing (resulting in rasping sounds) as they move around during the presentation easy fix is to use tie clip and duct tape to isolate from cloting contact.

Further if you have access to a 2nd camera it makes for good insurance

- use it as a sound back up from speakers (be carefull with 2nd camera placement to avoid audio input overload), including ambient room/audience noise and

- at the same time use it for any B Roll shots, (audience, wide shots, company logos etc) you may require in post. B Roll shots can cover a multitude of mistakes.

If the presenters use a Microsoft Power Point presentation, ensure you get a copy for inclusion in your edit. I think you have done enough homework to ensure it will all go well on the day. Good luck.
