Help! I dropped my Sony HDR-CX12 on a rock while filming my daughter trout fishing. We caught no trout, so I didn't miss much, but now it won't film. There is NO visible damage to the outside of the camera.

Specifically, when I turn it on it makes a clicking sound. At first it was out of focus, and as I zoomed back out wide, it would focus. Recorded video at that level of zoom looked okay, but of course you could hear the clicking sound. Zooming in was not an option (wouldn't focus). After less than a minute of recording like that, it now does not even record at wide view--it gives me an error message that cannot be cleared and it won't record. It flashes the message E:61:11 in the upper right of the preview window. I switched off the EASY settings (yeah, I know, I'm an amateur) and tried manual zooming. Works for wide, but while zooming in it loses focus and cannot be manually fixed; when you arrive at FULL ZOOM it can be adjusted to be clear. The clicking has now stopped, too.

Basic research on Google suggests it's a "stuck lens." Any ideas on where to get it repaired or IF it can be repaired? I'm in Northeast PA.

Hello, I am basically clueless. I have a Sony HXR-NX5U which I bought so I could have a tapeless workflow. However, when I import my files into Pinnacle 14, there is no sounds. I was under the impression that Pinnacle could play AVCHD files natively.

If anyone knows what I am missing, or could help me troubleshoot this I would greatly appreciate it.

I am new to the board and purchased a Sony (consumer) HDR-HC3 1080i camera 1.5 years ago. I'm now using it quite frequently and realized that its shortcoming is that is doesn't offer an auxilliary 1/8" mic input. I did purchase from B&H the Sony Zoom/Gun mic that is designed to work (receives power from) the Active Interface Shoe. Does anyone know of an adapter that I can use on the shoe that will allow 3rd party gun microphones? The Sony gun mic I purchased doesn't give me the quality i'm looking for. I'm also hoping that any 3rd party hot-shoe adapter will shut off the integrated mic, but that is probably asking for too much.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I recently acquired a Sony BVW-22 Beta SP "Office" player. We purchased it used with the intent of viewing and archiving some old footage before the tapes became unwatchable. We got an awesome deal on it (we have invested less than $30 in it), and it worked for a while, but it recently has begun eating tapes, and giving an error code "03" (Tape slack). Other than the above mentioned problems the machine is very clean and appears to be in excellent condition. Can anyone speak to the reliability of these machines and whether it would be worth investing several hundred dollars in getting it checked out and repaired? In looking online, I see that the "asking price" for a verified working unit is about $2000. Is this a reasonable price for a unit such as this?

I am looking to buy a new prosumer level camera to shoot local tourism videos and weddings and conferences. So kind of a wide-range. I also want to buy something that will be relevant and practical for several years.

I've been asking some friends for advice and one says I should stick with Sony. One says I should stick with Panasonic. One says I should get HDV. Another few says STAY AWAY FROM HDV FOREVER ITS THE DEVIL (His words, not mine).

I don't really understand the difference between HDV and DVCPro HD or what is so wrong with HDV.

I don't know if I would be okay with a $2000 camera like the Sony HDR-FX7 or if I should go all out and look for a used HVX200 kit.

I also don't know if I should look only at flash drive cameras or tape cameras.

The HVX200 looks so practical because it records to P2 cards *or* tape *or* a firestore drive. Some of the kits I've been looking at include some P2 cards and even firestore drives.

But would it be more economical/practical to just go with a traditional tape camera?

I DON'T KNOW and feel so overwhelmed. I would appreciate honest feedback if anyone can help me. Thank you!

I recently purchased Sony’s new HDR FX1000 camcorder. There were several reasons I wanted this particular camera, one being its “1080/24p and 1080/30p Progressive Scan mode that enables nice looking film-like video”. What I don’t understand but would like to know more about is, when in this mode, the camera converts to and records 60i. Doesn’t that defeat the advantage of progressive scan? How do I benefit from these recording modes if it will end up as 60i in the end? Why not always just set the camera for 1080/60i and skip the conversion? Any resource material I could read that would help me better understand how to take full advantage of this camera’s features? (I edit using Premiere Pro CS4)

No USB outlet, AV Jack only. I bought a Sony DCR-HC96 trying to link one to the other and then into the computer, because all the research indicated that the DCR-HC96 was he only one with pass thru capacity, ie, converted analog to digital, but of course, can't find the right cables anywhere to connect these two either. Any help most appreciated

I output from my Sony DRV530 digital 8mm camcorder, through the firewire connection, direct to my computer and attempt to capture normally. The capture begins, then after 5-10 seconds, it stops recording and the camcorder stops.Machines vary from Vista 32bit, 64bit and 3 XP machines. Each has much more than minimum requirements to run a capture.

I have used 5 different computers. I have tried capturing using Corel's Movie Factory 6, Cyberlink's Power Director and Corel's video studio x2 pro. They all stopped capturing within seconds of starting. Now, when I used my ancient copy of Adobe Premiere version 6.5, the capture worked for the entire 51 minutes of video. Premiere is on the oldest and slowest machine I have. This is baffling. Any ideas why this is happening???

I just got off the phone with SONY support, 1+ hour of holding and talking to them. My HDR SR12 has less than 4 hours of time on it. I bought it 8/25/2008 for $1,025.00 from Beach Camera.

In May 2009 the camera quit working and gave me a HDD Format error E:31:00. At that time SONY support gave me fixit directions and I wiped HDD with all videos. I was not advised to return camera for problems.

This weekend I did some video and stills. When I tried to copy off the HDD to my computer I got the same error E:31:00. I called SONY there is no fix, except to wipe the drive and re-format. I indicated this was not fixing the problem. Then I was imformed to send it in for repair.

Funny part is, my invoice date is 1 year ago today. They didn't charge me for parts, but the charged me 149.00 for labor. This is wrong, after all this is the second time within 1 year I called about same problem. I don't mind telling you I complained. I was transferred to customer service, where I gave them my credit card number. Then I was given an RMA address to Laredo Texas for repair.

Now guys don't think I'm a troublemaker. I just think this was very unfair, and worst still from what I've read around on the web the HDD has been causing problems for SONY. Yet, I get to pay for fixing the camera.

Regradless, I am thinking to EBAY this camera when it is returned to me. SONY said they would thoroughly assess all the parts in the camera as well, replace the HDD and return it to me "Good as New". The support guy actually said,"it will be as good as what I bought new". I suspect by now most of the problems SONY had are pretty well fixed by now, and the camera will probably be fine. Since there is no serial number on the camera I suspect they will just replace it.

I really want to make this point. I don't think HDD with current technology is a best go for anyone that really needs their pictures. I'm going to go to a tape or card for storage on next camcorder. In other words, I'm not going to lose another picture to the HDD demons.

CAVEAT EMPTOR (buyer beware) definitely applies to SONY camcorder purchases.

First post in this forum, thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I searched all over this BB with no luck getting the specific information I'm seeking.

I use a Sony HDR FX1 camcorder to shoot HD footage inside hockey arenas. Primarily, I am up in the stands, away from the ice surface.

For some reason I keep getting large fluctuations in the lighting and I believe it has something to do with the florescent lights used in the arenas. There also seems to be a correlation between the amount of zoom and the light level fluctuations. When I zoom in the picture seems to brighten up.

Here http://vimeo.com/8507644 is a link to a video I shot last week. There are examples throughout but you can see them easily around 1:28, 1:43 and 1:58.

I shoot the video in manual setting levels. Typically the settings will be as follows: shutter speed 125, gain 3db, iris is around 2.8 to 3.4 (depending on the zebra exposure), zebra is set at 95, white balance is set to indoor and calibrated using a "Shooters Blues" card (blue side). Focus will usually be set to automatic, but I will sometimes set it to infinite if the subject is far enough away.

By way of setup, I will calibrate the white balance at the arena, turn the iris dial until the zebra starts showing up and the shoot away. I have no idea if that makes sense but that's my process.

I edit using Pinnacle Studio 14 Ultimate, typically utilizing the auto color correction feature. I will also try to use the white balance feature if things are too dull. The light level changes are prevalent before and after post production, in case you are wondering.

If anyone has any ideas on how to eliminate the light level changes or
thoughts on achieving proper color balance etc. I'm all ears. Thanks in advance.

I have an SR11 recording in mpeg. I want to make DVDs that have a good image quality but can be made quickly. I do not need to edit the files, but write them quickly to a DVD. They would have over 99 chapters, so several titles would have to be made. The DVDs would be 100 min long. Auto chapter detection would be a big plus. I am open to advice for MACs or PCs software. Thank You

I am planning to buy Sony HDR-XR520V for making small movies. I have few doubts, how can we achive cinematic look of the output using this Camera? Do I need to add something extra to give the film a movie like output instead of Viedo recording type output.

Also is there any other camera better than this but in the price range of $1000.

I had a VX1000, and a VX2000. I loved these cameras and I did a lot of work with them and they certainly earned their keep. Ok, the new boy is the FX1000. i bought two of them. I'm not saying I regret it but I do have some issues. The audio is not as good as its predecessors. I use an external audio mixer and a field recorder but I'm still pissed. The older cameras would take line in - not so on the FX1000. I have to have a mixer that can attenuate the signal, thank you very much. Can I leave the on camera mics on auto? No way! Anytime you use auto, of course the gain picks up when there is silence, but this is ridiculous. These cameras jack it up so high it creates noise so high it is unusable. I believe that if you want good video you have to control it outside the camera but hell we should get better audio from the cameras. The cameras are good in the video although they don't do 1080p. The low light performance is excellent. You can actually jump up the gain and use the material. Jump it to +9db is perfectly useable. I've never used a videocamera where you can jack up the gain and actually use the footage for more than just a novelty. Gerry in Calgary

My Sony Mini-DV camcorder is not being recognized by my Gateway running Vista. I thought it might be a bad connection at the camcorder but today I noticed that the camcorder reads "dv in" on the viewfinder when I plug the firewire cable in so it is being recognized but it doesn't show up in My Computer. Any thoughts?

Hello All,

I’m a fairly experienced shooter; however I don’t do video work as a profession per se. I am an inventor/product designer/developer and often produce my own DVDs which accompany my products.

I have a PD-150 which I haven’t used in over a year and with which I plan to shoot an exercise video for a new fitness product I developed. My project partner is to be our demonstration model for the video. Tonight we shot our beta video for case study hand-outs and for several physicians to receive with the product for testimonials. As this was only a beta video, I didn’t bother with the arduous task of lighting the room with 4-5 K watts worth of softlights; I merely used the ample available lighting within the room to shoot. As most of you know, the Pd-150 is known for decent low light video acquisition; hence I didn’t go to extremes lighting the set.

I also own an almost virgin Canon XL-2, but I chose to use the PD-150 as I am partitioning the DVD 16:9 full screen into windows which will contain info as well as graphics and video simultaneously. Although the XL-2 will shoot 4:3, it looses some resolution; I figured the PD-150 would give me the best 4:3 image of the two for this particular project.

After uploading tonight’s beta footage to my PC via Firewire, I noticed the footage appears crummy in the timeline and after rendering to MPEG-2 – grainy, dark and not fluid looking. I NEVER shoot on auto; for this beta video I set the shutter speed to 1/125 as the motion of the exercise begs for a slightly higher speed. My iris was 1.6 with zero gain. I did a clean manual white balance as well. My exposure was respectable; I verified with my zebra stripes on hot spots with which I am familiar.

I’m trying to figure out what the heck could be the problem with this. Could a head cleaning be the problem? Could it be a tape issue? A Firewire issue? I’m completely stumped and I need to figure this out before the actual production shoot. The PD-150 should give a very clean image; I bought this baby new in 2002, the operation times are as follows: “Operation” 64X10H, “Drum Run” 19X10, “Tape Run” 12X10, “Threading” 43X10.

Do the hours indicated beg for a head cleaning or service? Are there any tests I can perform to ascertain where the problem lies?

I’d greatly appreciate any insight!!!

Thanks in advance!!

I am new to the forum so thanks for all the good info I have been reading. Does anyone have any experience with a so-called "steady stick". Example: http://www.tiffen.com/steady_stick.htm I have seen similar ones for sale as low as $100 and wonder how it performs. I would like to have a full-blown steady-cam but don't want to spend $3,000 either but am willing to spend up to say $500.

Thanks for the input. Sony HVR-7ZU cam.

Hi Folks:

As I am completely new to video production and editing, and would like to start out in the right direction, it would be very helpful to have some input on selecting my first camera.

My hobby is exploring old hard rock mines up in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. I have always taken photos of the expeditions, but have only recently started taking rudimentary video using the “movie” function of my digital camera (Sony DSC-W230). I take the photos and video to not only document what I find, but to also allow other people who cannot otherwise hike to see what “is out there.”

Here are some tidbits of info about what I know and think I know about the type of camera I would like and environment it will be used:

- This will be my first video camera, so simple is better. But as I start to play around and learn more adjustability would be nice.

- HD would be preferable.

- I already have Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 Platinum.

- The hikes run anywhere from a couple of hours to well over 12, so the ability to switch batteries is a must.

- The environment can be brutal (heat, cold, moisture), but of course the camera will be protected as much as possible.

- The equipment will get jostled while hiking, but usually stationary when filming. It will be kept in a Pelican waterproof case when not in use.

- Filming conditions will be everything from pitch-dark mines to bright sunshine and everything in-between.

- Don’t know if is matters, but my current computer has USB-2 and an HDMI port.

- Would prefer a headset port to monitor audio levels and the ability to use an external microphone – but an unlimited budget I do not have. (-:

- Finally, the fact that my gear takes a beating is first and foremost on my mind. So, in regards to storage, and if I did not know any better, I would probably shy away from hard-drive based units??? But what do I know? I DO know however, that the ability to switch out the media, or augment on-board storage would be a plus.

So, that’s where I am at. It would be wonderful to get some direction on this so I don’t make a mistake on my first camera purchase. I am not looking for anything fancy or pro, jus something I can cut my teeth on and still end up with good looking shots.

Take care, and thanks!

Mark

I have two Sony HVR-Z1e cameras and I seem to have a problem with dust/glass fragments, inside the lens, that cannot be removed.

Has anybody else got or had this problem and how have you overcome it?

I sent my camera back to Sony under warranty but they told me that the cameras had been dropped and that I would have to pay for the repair.

The cameras have not been dropped.

I now find that several of my friends and colleagues with the same type of cameras have found very similar problems.

If you do have a camera, particularly if the serial number is between 1210001 and 1233350, I can tell you how to check for this problem if you contact me.
I would also be interested to hear from anyone with a Sony HVR-Z1 camera who has already identified this problem.

Please contact me via email: davidblake1@mac.com or skype name: jcmdcb.

I have two Sony FX1000 and I do multicamera shoots. I was wondering if using CF cards rather than tape would reduce the amount of drift I get between cameras so I don't have to do so much work syncing them in post. If I go the CF route, what to people recommend Focus or Sony? Gerry in Calgary.
