Mike Smith on "Which Format To Use To Create DVD?"

I'm seeking some assistance in the following:

1. My main interest is to 'burn' DVD's. In this respect, which format should I use?

A. I've tried using MPEG conversion via Video Ts_ Files, and lost 10 seconds at the beginning, otherwise o.k.

B. I then used MP4 to convert Video Ts_Files. I did not lose the 10 seconds at the beginning, and everything is fine.

C. There are various formats, MPEG, FLV, MP4, etc. I find HTML 5 too slow in converting and see no difference in quality.

Case in point, If I download videos from YouTube, either in FLV, or MP4, I have to convert them prior to burning to DVD. I can convert FLV directly to DVD, as well as MP4, via the conversion process. "If I download in FLV format and convert to MP4 prior to burning DVD, will this degrade the video? Or, should I just transfer the video file, (FLV or MP4), directly to DVD?

Naturally, these files can play on any standalone DVD player. Can anyone elaborate on this subject to provide information. By the way, this is my first post. I thank you and would truly appreciate any help.

Some cameras now shoot at the high frame rate of 60 frames per second progressive (actually 59.94 fps). However, I have found that when you produce your finished product you should set the frame rate at 60 fps (not at 59.94 fps) to sync with 60 Hz line frequency.

Hey all,

I recorded someone in my singing a song in my recording studio and then when I mixed down the audio in my Audio Editor software and put it in Vegas along with the video file, they don't match up.

What can I do to 1)fix this now, and 2) correct for this in the future so it doesn't happen?

The odd thing is that I've done two songs for her and the first one, which is longer and mixed down the same way, fit fine once I lined it up. but the 2nd song, which is shorter, didn't fit correctly.

 Any thoughts?

I am having an impossible time getting quality results recording screens from smatphones and tablets. Has anyone got a setup or advice on how to do this with goos results. We need to do several training vidoes with several devices. We can depend on each device to have video output so it seems easier to just mount a camera point it a the screens of these devices and capture it that way... Again any guidance or advice here would be nice. Light emitting devices like these are not my specialty! :-)

I recently (last Thursday) bought a nice used XL1s and shot with it this weekend. I'm looking for suggestions on what to use to capture and edit. I have CS4, but haven't used it much. I hooked the camera up to the PC last night and captured it with Adobe On Location, but I don't know if that was what I should have done or not. It was only like a 10Gb file for 54 minutes of video. In case it matters I recorded in frame mode, 16:9 format in SP. Most shots are in low light. My 11 year old son sings and plays guitar and ukulele (hence avatar <----). I am trying to make a "music video" for YouTube and his website that is a step closer to a professional look.

Hi, I'm involved with a very small independent record label and we're looking at making basic videos (to start with) for the bands - but are pretty much clueless at how to go about it.

The video will be synched to studio audio so sound isn't a big concern.

The kind of video we want to make is like this - http://youtu.be/w1akDsTK6TA

We have access to a couple of basic HD camcorders and an editing suite. What other equipment will we need to achieve this look?

Some lighting obviously - What kind?

Anything else - any other tips on shooting/ editing / anything?

Thanks in advance.

I have shot our first inhouse corporate video and the faces are way overexposed. There is not enough detail in the image to color correct it properly, plus with the amount of videos we need to produce in such a short period of time, I'd like to minimize the amount of color correction we have to do in post. So, how should I be lighting the subjects to avoid overexposed faces? I have 4 lights, and can put up to a max of 500 watt bulbs on two of them, and a max of 150 watts on the other 2. Our studio is 12 ft wide and I have the lights as far as they can go on either side of the subject against the wall.

I am a student learning to use Final Cut Pro, and I am trying to obtain a certain "overlay " effect. I want to make a music video of myself playing three instruments and another person playing two, and we would all be in the same shot. I would have to play a drumset which is not movable. I have a green screen to use and I vaguely understanding keying. The school only supplies a kodak "Flip" style video camera, yet there are shoulder mounts to use if needed, if camera type matters. If anyone could walk me through how to achieve this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys,

This is my first post on here so bear with me. I hear doing forums is always a good way to get advice and answers on topics, so here goes:

My wife and a friend of ours have started a new web series to be posted on video sites such as youtube, etc. We have experience with acting having worked on real movie sets, as well as script writing (which is what I went to school for), but none of us have any real experience with filming itself. My question is, to make the movie come out as professional as possible, what are some camera angles/transitions, etc. to use to get the right effect? Or rather, the most efficient effect?

The movie contains zombies and will be fast paced. We are filming in the woods and most of the footage will be during the day. The first couple of episodes are background, so its mostly discussion between two characters. I just don't want to shoot the film from one angle the entire time and thus make it boring. Any advice?

Hi everyone,

A new chap looking for advice. I shoot mostly still aerials, lately I have been experimenting with video, I have been building a rig with three gyro's in and I am starting to get it smooth footage at the front end, with AE sorting out the extra bumps.

At the moment whilst experimenting I am shooting on a 550D with the intention of getting something more pro when I am happy with the gyro setup etc.

Like most of us I am familiar with the quality I watch on TV day to day, I'm not watching in HD but the quality of say The Frozen Planet is spectacular in every way. Now I do not expect a 550D to produce that, but what I am getting looks closer to vhs more than HD. I shoot 25fps at 1080 and output via AE, it all looks fuzzy, not out of focus just fuzzy. Most of what I have been shooting are buildings, what should be sharp edges are just as I say fuzzy, not soft, they lack definition. Is this a side effect of sorting out rolling shutter problems with AE, (which are bad from a moving platform) or something else?

Cheers,

Hi all,

My name is Jason and I'm a novice video maker. Please forgive the length of this post but I am trying to decide on the appropriate camera/software combination for my next project. Let me describe what I'm planning on doing first and then I'll ask my question(s) afterward.

I am a musician with over 23 years experience and I've always wanted to teach. I finally got the idea to do an instructional web show where I talk about some of my instruments, provide demonstrations, explain some beginning, advanced and "extended" performance techniques, do some product reviews, etc. My goal is to make several 10 minute long episodes and post them to websites like youtube, bliptv and more. If all goes well, I'll continue to do the show for quite some time and I'll invite others to provide some of their creative ideas for discussion. I'll probably record most if not all of the footage in my basement and will edit everything on my macbook which I bought back in 2006.

After doing some extensive research, I think I've decided on a camera: the CANON FS200. I like most of its features and feel like it would an all around good camera for me to start with. I'm not really interested in doing anything in HD at this point and my show is going to be more about the content than stellar production values so I don't mind that the camera is SD. Also, considering my financial restraints, it's well with in my budget.

I've heard that the FS200, like many flash drive camcorders, records in .MOD which is hard to work with in most editing programs. I've done some research on that as well and I'm finding that there are ways to work around it. I currently have imovie HD but am looking to upgrade to another program.

So here are my questions:

1. Does the FS200 seem like a good option for the project that I've described? If not, do you know of another camcorder that might work just as well if not better around the same price? I think I'm sold on the FS200 but am open to other options. I prefer flash drives or hard drives to dvdrs and mini dvdrs.

2. Should I upgrade to iLife '09 or, like in question 1, is there a better alternative that I should be aware of? Please keep in mind my miniscule budget (around $500 for camera, software, accessories).

3. When I do finally choose my camera and editing software I will obviously need to start editing my footage at some point. What is the best format to edit in to get the most versatility out of it? In other words, I want to put these videos on the internet but I may also want to put them on a DVD for friends and family and I'll want them to look good too. I heard the .AVI is the best but very large and the MPEG is compressed and not very good to edit with. Is there a middle of the road and more importantly, well the format work with my mac software?

I appreciate any of your thoughts on this. I am totally new to this process and I just want to get started off on the right foot. I appreciate your time.

Best,

Jason Mullinax

Well I am embarking on yet another challenging project that I have no experience with. Call it risk-taking or stupidity, but I am going for it anyway. Here's my current work - a bible study: http://vimeo.com/21541661 (Don't be too critical - ALL of my video & editing has been self taught)

The next study they would like to video in a huge building in front of floor to ceiling windows overlooking the city - one lesson at night and the other lesson during daylight.

So, isn't that impossible? I mean wouldn't everything (lights, me, camera...) reflect in the glass in the background - regardless of day or night? Is my only option to use green screen?

Any direction will be helpful to me, feel free to assume I know nothing - forever learning, will remain a Doctor of education by training not a videographer/editor by training!

Also - I have 2 Sony PD170 Professional cameras and edit on PowerMacG5 with Final Cut Pro 5

Thanks!

I just switched from Windows to Mac and I have now realized that I can't use any of my source MTS (AVCHD) footage files without first converting them to another format that is supported by Mac. So I found some different converters and am able to convert to usable file formats but the problem I am having is that the capture date and time are being lost in the conversion. The new dates in the files of the conversion dates. So, is there a way to preserve the capture date and time so my footage sorts properly?

Hello all, I have a question about some green screen work I am about to start in a couple weeks.

Basically we went out and shot a group of water skiers behind a boat out on the lake and an office wants me to Photoshop all of their partners into the photo (replacing the skiers) and in a pyramid scheme. I have a green screen/lights set up that I use for film but this specific job is photography (with the Canon T2i).

I'm confident in the project even with its ridiculousness considered however I can't decide on one thing: should I do this green screen set up outside (to match the light of the original photo) or should I go ahead and light it well inside and match the original in Adobe Photoshop? I've never had problems doing that but I've seen this office's other "office photos" and they look flawless with Photoshop and everything. Thanks in advance if you can push me towards the most efficient way.

I live in South Florida and there are plenty of opportunities here for beautiful productions on the water. Saltwater is the hardest environment for electronics, though, so special techniques are needed. Any tips and tricks that you can share for broadcast quality? Gear? Housings, rain shields?

I am particularly interested in protecting the sound equipment, cutting wind noise, etc. as a boom pole is almost impossible to maneuver on a smaller boat.

Whether you're using a Canon, Nikon, Pentax or other type of HDSLR camera, the big issue is keeping that bad-boy in focus. Yes, you can spend a couple of metric tons worth of cash on focusing gear but whether you do or don't keeping good focus without auto settings must be dealt with. Here's a vid from Stillmotion giving some good basic tips for keeping focus with the Canon line of cameras and a few items for monitoring your image during shooting. These lessons apply to whatever camera line you're using so take notes... there'll be a quiz!

I record on a Sony Handycam mostly. Straight to Memory Stick Pro Duo. I cut and paste the created files right off the card and onto my hard drives, where they're backed up, used, and stored. I am content with my workflow and see no reason to change.

I only save the .mts files and I scrap the rest, reformat the card and stick it back in the Handycam for the next day's filming.

But, SHOULD I KEEP IT ALL?

The other files seem to be files used to index the videos on the card. In theory, I could copy the whole card each time and save ALL the files; then I could copy the files back to a clean card and plug it in the camera and the camera could interpret them, although I've never had a need to do this.

Is there any other use for those files? Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I keep all the files?

Just curious on others' thoughts.

Hi All,

I am really embarrassed to even post this, but I'll give it a shot (no pun intended).

For my business, I want to do a multicamera shoot. Here is my hardware set up...I have 2 Panasonic HPX170's, each connected via SDI to a Panasonic HMX100 Video Mixer. I have a regular LCD computer monitor connected to the HMX100 via DVI-D in addition to a AJA KI Proto connected to the HMX100 to serve as the recording device for the single video shot.

Now here is the dumb question (ready for it?):

I cannot get the camera output for each camera to appear on the reference monitor. It shows nothing. Now I don't have P2 cards in the camera, b/c I don't think I will need them given I am recording the "mixed" video shot from the video mixer to the AJA Ki Pro. But nothing appears and when I hit the record button on the camera, nothing happens. I believe I have set up the mixer appropriately, because the reference monitor does show 2 mini windows for the two cameras, but they are white and nothing shows up.

Please help! And please be kind!

HEllo everyone,

I am designing a digital ad for a client using Adobe After Effects CS4. They want me to produce a MPEG-4 Part 2 in AVI container. Though I know what a MPEG video or an AVI are, I have no clue what they mean by 'MPEG-4 Part 2 in AVI container'. They suggested I use DivX to encode the file but Divx Plus 8.0 exports only divx files... I'm kinda lost.

What format should the final file be? An AVI, MPEG, DIVX???

Thanks for your help.

So can add more audio quality to my videos. i am also using the camera mic (panasonic agdvx100b), but when i upload my audio file to my time line (FCP) and sync the audio whit the video file the first minutes are ok but after that i can ear the audio unsync this is the audio file upload from the digital voice recorder.

Can someone give advice

Thanks

On my blog site, there's alot of articles and websites that I have recommended to help us all in regards with pre-production, production and post production. I'm new and i'm trying to create a community within my blogsite so that we all can learn from each other and compare opinions. My only dream is that someone will push us towards a newer era in film/video creativity. Let's start now.

When creating a video picture album it is almost impossible for a customer to make copies of the pictures in the slideshow. Is there some other format to use that you can have music plus access to copy the pictures. I know that I can make two files one slideshow and one data but if possible would like to make just one. Thanks

Hello! I am building my first Chromakey studio and I wanted to get some expert opinions before I push the go button. I have the camera and tripod but I need to buy lights, greenscreen and microphone. Here is what I have picked out so far:

Blue/Green screen from Lastolite:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/254350-REG/Lastolite_LL_LC5787_10x12_Blue_Green_Chromakey_Background.html

Lighting Kit - 1500 total watts.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/490320-REG/Savage_M31500_Variable_Power_3_Flood.html

Wireless Mic- Sony
UWP-V1

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/553681-REG/Sony_UWP_V1_3032_UWP_V1_Wireless_Lavalier_Microphone.html

The studio will be portable and I plan to set it up like this:

I'm going to position the two lights behind my talent so that It lights up the green screen nice and evenly. I'll only have 1 light for the talent, so I'll probably raise it as high as it can go and try to point directly at their face. Is a hair light and dim light absolutely necessary to have pointed on the talent? What if I moved my two side green screen lights back just a bit and had them hit the two sides of my talents face + the background while I used the key light directly on their face.

For the audio I want to treat the space a bit, but panels are not an option because the studio will be portable. I was thinking of hanging up some moving blankets on the two sides of the green screen going back towards the camera to absorb some of the sound. Would this be a good idea?

Also, am I going overkill on the wireless mic? I just really want good audio. The videos I produce with this setup will be for product demonstrations.

Am I forgetting anything?

Thank you so much!

Jonathan Decker Wrote:

This post is a little late now but..
There's this nifty gadget I saw a guy using. It was a screen that was grey (kinda movie-theatre silver) and had paired with it a light ring that mounted around, but out of sight of, the camera lense. The background wasn't even lit and the keying turned out great. I think the hardware must have been expensive based on the care the crew took with it, but I don't know what it was called. Anyone else know?
