No problem. Just post followups so I can learn how you're making out with whatever you choose. Turns out my Sony bit the dust, I think, and I'll be in the market soon, too, if I can' t get it fixed.

I think the answer is "not as much." That Panasonic camera appears to record in AVCHD which is a memory hog. I have 8GB RAM, 64 bit OS, 4 core processor, etc., and it lags when editing it in the window in Premiere Pro CS4. The JVC camera looks like it records in a less troublesome format. (This is my understanding but I'm an amateur.) CS5 probably does a better job of handling AVCHD because it uses the video card processor to process it, not just the CPU.

These two posts (click linsk below) discuss that a lot about it and have a lot of great links. Reading the wikipedia article under AVCHD gives a good overview, too.

http://videomaker.com/community/forums/topic/video-lag-in-editor-window

http://videomaker.com/community/forums/topic/hmc40-worklow-help-for-a-total-newb

ALL THAT SAID, I use CS4 and still make competent videos without too much hassle using AVCHD footage. It just doesn't always flow perfectly in the editing window, that's all. The rendered product looks awesome (in my opinion)--every bit as good as what I see on my big screen TV in HD from Directv.

I'm thinking of buying the Panasonic AG-HMC40 (after checking out the
ProCamcorder Buyer's Guide [Videomaker May 2010]). My question is: Will
I be able to edit the footage in Premier Pro CS4 easily with this
camcorder?

After reading this part in the Buyer's Guide: "Final Cut Pro
editors will be particularly fond of JVC's GY-HM100 and
GY-HM700 cameras, as they are now capable of recording directly to
QuickTime (.mov) files, eliminating the extra time-consuming step of
converting the files after transfer. These cameras also record in .mp4,
so users of Premiere Pro and Avid can relax." http://www.videomaker.com/article/14800/

Especially concerning the part about how owners of the JVC's
GY-HM100 and
GY-HM700 cameras can relax if they're using Premiere Pro to do their
editing. I'm wondering if I can "relax" if I'm using Premiere Pro CS4 to
do my editing with the Panasonic AG-HMC40?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Okay, I bought a .45 lens adapter for my Panasonic PV-GS500 and it gives a great view of the tennis court, so that settles that. I DO get a little line curvature....which is interesting. Another guy with an expensive VADO camera gets the same wide angle, from the same position, without the curvature. Guess that's the "barrel effect"?

Now I'd like to find a camcorder like the VADO that has removable memory and a wide angle. I'd get a VADO but the memory is too small for a day's worth of shooting.

Okay, that's good advice. Is it possible that it's as simple as this: If I now have a 45 degree field of view with my current set up, will a .7 wide angle adapter therefore give me a field of view equal to 45/.7, or 64.5 degrees?? And a .5 wide angle lens would result in a 90 degree f.o.v.?

My fingers and toes are crossed that it's that easy.....is it?

As Rob said, I think a 0.7 wide angle adapter would be your best choice - Anything wider than that will give you noticeable line curvature.

I have used a 0.7 on my cameras and that has worked well for marching band stuff.

Well, the focal length on your camera is variable because your camera zooms. So to figure out how wide your camera can go with an adapter, use 2.8mm in your calculation because 2.8mm is your widest focal length.

I'm not sure if a 90 degree angle will make your image look like a fisheye. I never got into details like that. I just shoot what looks good.

Thanks, that helps a little, but I was hoping that either someone a) had experience filming a tennis court, or b) knew how to calculate the Field of View. I mean, I can go to Wikipedia and look up the calculation, but what is the focal length of the gs500? The ccd is listed at 1/4.7 inches and I can convert that to mm, but the focal length is variable from 2.8 to 39 mm?? What would you use for this measurement?

Like I say, I like math as well as the next guy, but there has to be an easier way to figure out how to get 90 degree field of view!

Another question - will a 90 degree angle make it look like a fish eye?? :)

I did a google search to see what your camera looks like. You have what is called a "cold shoe." (right in front of your view finder, right?)

What did your camera come with, a pistol grip with a screw hole on the bottom side of the grip? or did it come with a holder that you screw onto a mic stand?

What you need is a shock mount that will attach to a camera's cold shoe

Well the wider you go, the closer to fisheye you will be. That's just how it is unless you want to spend thousands on a wide angle, non-distortion lens. So .7 will be less wide, but the edges of your frame won't be curved very much.

Take a look at www.schneideroptics.com. They provide sample images

I like to film tennis matches  and want to get a wider angle when I film from the top of the back fence of the tennis court.  I have a PV-gs500 camcorder. Â

The court is 36' wide, the camera is 21 foot back. Â I'd like to get the whole court, but don't want too much distortion of the far side of the court. Â When I draw it out on paper, it looks like I need abaout a 90 degree field of vision. Â

What lens would get me in that ballpark? Â A .7, .5, .45??? Â I DO NOT Â want a fisheye effect, and I don't want to have to buy a bunch of lenses just to find out which one works. Â If you guys could help, that would be really great!

Thanks for any ideas or guidance.

Your camcorder should be recognized by your computer, however, it doesn't show up on your desktop like a hard drive does.

USB will not work for capturing video. You have to use Firewire. I don't even know why they put USB on miniDV cameras.

FCE will be able to edit your video. When you capture, it automatically turns your video into .mov files, which is the preferred format for FCE and FCP.

I have a Panasonic PV-GS39 camcorder from a few years back. It is a mini-dv camcorder. My question is about whether it can be recognized by my iMac Intel 24" running leopard. I understand that a firewire cable is needed to transport video. However, should the computer also recognize the camcorder when connected via usb at least. Will this camcorder even work with Mac? And if so, will the video files be accessible in FCE to edit? Any suggestions on where to find a solution would be very helpful. Thanks.

It's been my experience to use something of professional quality--perhaps a Panasonic PV-GS150 or similar model. It's a consumer cam, but uses the same technology as their broadcast models. As far as prosumer models, the AG-DVC20 (which I just purchased on eBay) is good. Some reviews are negative, but I wouldn't worry. Accessories should include extra batteries, filters, a wide angle lens and solid tripods--Manfrotto or Sunpak.

32-bit and 64-bit go by their own specific "processing patterns" (64 will generally provides better speed and bandwidth). If a software package is designed for 32-bit, then the hard code of the program is specific for running on a 32-bit system. As far as I know, there is no workaround other than purchasing the 64-bit system version and selling the other one.

Premiere should do it. What version do you have? I forget what version began supporting MTS native file formats.

I have heard that Pinnacle is good, and cheap. (do you have a PC or Mac?)

I recently downloaded AVS Video Converter 6, but didn't buy it. It seems to be a pretty good program. But I'm not sure what format you would convert AVCHD to and not lose resolution. There might be something, though. It supports a lot of formats and such.

I have the HS100, but my computer isn't really fast enough. I did convert the video using HD Writer to MPEG2 video, which worked, even though my computer isn't even a dual core, which surprised me. It does have a bit of trouble smoothly playing MTS HD files, though, and even told me one time that my computer didn't have enough processing power to do something, but I forget what that was. Might have been editing.

"Will MPEG2 to AVI be a lower quality file ?"

For the most part, it depends on the bitrate. MPEG-2 and DV-AVI store video by different means of compression (each with its own set of losses). Like I said "for the most part", you will be at a greater loss working with MPEG-2 (25 Mbps) converted to DV-AVI (25 Mbps) than you would be editing the 25-Mbp MPEG-2 as it is (25 Mbps is just an example). I would edit the MPEG-2 (TS) as it is if your system handles it well enough with software that supports it. Converting between different formats involved different dropoffs (information losses) at different parts of the video. You probably won't notice anything converting to DV-AVI, as the quality of the AVI is closer to lossless. But still, the compression algorithms are different. If you prefer the ease of editing, a conversion to DV-AVI is definitely worth it.

Have you checked for a different approach, such as freeware for converting video, other than Roxio? AVS Video Converter

Does anyone here own a Panasonic AG-HMC40? If so, I was wondering how you'd compare it to other camcorders as far as video quality. I ordered one recently and have yet to recieve it so I'm looking forward to trying it out. I've always wanted a decent 3 chip HD camera with pro manual controls. I own two cameras that are three chip that I've aquired through the years; the Sony VX2000 and the Sony FX7. Unfortunately I've been dissappointed with the quality of video of both these cameras but recently I bought the 2009 Canon HG-20 and was blown away. It only has one CMOS chip but the video quality is nothing short of breathtaking. I've been reading recently about Panasonic and the fact that they are producing some high quality HD cameras as well. That's why I decided to purchase the Panasonic AG-HMC40 Camcorder. If anyone here has one and can let me know what you think about it, thanks in advance.

I was curious if anyone has used the panasonic Ag HMC70U.

Almost everyweek someone on these forums asks what camera to buy and I ran across this unit on B&H (link below). It has tapeless workflow, 3CCD, and XLR inputs all for $1695.00 which is a lot of what people are looking for so I was curious what people thought about it.

I agree Earl...I'm as worried as you, but for the cost, if I can get good footage, I think it will be well worth it. I'm just trying to figure it all out and any help people can provide would be greatly appreciated. It's vastly different than shooting stills, that's for sure. :)
