Hi,

I want to start doing aerial filming i.e. taking video from a light aircraft of the landscape. Hi,

I want to do HD video from an airplane, but need advice on
which type of camcorder. I have been told that becuase of the vibration
in the aircraft I must be careful which medium the camcorder writes to
(i.e. disc, card etc). Any advice on what specs a camcorder must have to
take high quality footage from an aircraft.

Hey I own a Canon XH-A1 mini dv camcorder and I want to buy a backpack for it. Since I do alot of flying it can be a pain to take my camera on carry-on luggage and my 15 inch laptop. I wouldnt think of putting my cam in the check-in as its critical that it gets there with me so I can begin shooting pretty much as soon as I arrive. I also do a lot of outdoor shooting and it would be nice if it would be in a backpack so it would free up my hands. Im on a limited budget but im willing to pay out several hundred on good bag. Any suggestions? Thanks

I am putting together an UAV to shoot HD video. I want the camera to have many professional qualities but unfortunately I have a weight limit. Therefore I have to settle with what is completely required. These specs are:

Full HD resolution, preferably with interchangeable lenses

10X Optical Zoom minimum

Finally, a way to control the zoom remotely and wirelessly and if possible other camera functions.

Audio is needed or even a recorder which I can plug externally.

The tough part is that the camera, including the lenses and
battery, has to be under 500 gr (18oz). Please, does anyone have any suggestions?

I am interested in the Go Pro series of cameras after seeing another post in this forum. I also saw the XD1080 Replay camera mentioned in the new issue of Videomaker, and although it's new and I know nothing about it, at 3 ounces it looks pretty interesting, too. Anyone have experience with either of these who can comment on:

1. what codec do they record files with?

2. can i edit them natively with premiere pro?

3. do they have the tripod mounting hole on the bottom? i suspect the replay does not.

4. (important) can i turn off all beeps and sounds eminating from the camera? (i shoot a lot around wildlife and beeps are a no-no)

any other thoughts? i'll be strapping them to four wheelers, tractors, guns, bows, crossbows, animals, helmets, hoods of cars, sides of boats... pretty much anything i want to strap cameras to. if you can suggest other cameras for this sort of application, i'm all ears.

Thanks!

Hi all! My name is Peter and I am relatively new to the videomaking business. I go to a filmschool through which I managed to secure an internship filming documentaries in and about Uganda (east africa) next february.

The tricky bit is the fact that I'll be alone throughout the process. Which means i'll have to manage sound, video and interviewing all at the same time.

I have been given a 4000 euro budget and am trying to work out what gear to take with me and was wondering whether any of you have some suggestions for both the gear and the trip itself.

The gear I selected:

Camera: Canon XA10 - has xlr ports which allows for pro audio and is very compact. Also, since the footage will only be shown on the internet, I am asuming the AVCHD codec will suffice. The alternative is the xf100 which is 1000 euros more expensive and allows for less money to go to a accessories.

Sound: A shotgun mic. Either Sennheiser K6 with ME 64 or a rode mic. Also I am trying to find an affortable lapel mic. Also a camera stand to mount the shotgun on to record when handeling the camera.

Dolly: trackslider dolly system 75 cm (fits in lugage and gives a pro look to the film)

Is there something I am forgetting? Is there something I really should know before traveling to africa? Does anyone have any experience doing a one man documentary?

Any advice is welcome!

Hi, this is my first video compilation, shared here (also my first post). Looking for any constructive criticism. Videos shot on Canon 5d Mk II and GoPro HD Hero. I know, there is lot of things to do with postproduction and editing (this is just simple cuts), but my concern is atm more on videos itself. Also I'm planning to get dolly soon, so now its just static videos, I hope I'll improve that soon. Thanks for wiewing and especially commenting :)

As a person who enjoys filming outdoors, especially during severe weather events, and having seen lots of videos on YouTube about severe storms including derechos, downbursts, and even a few tornadoes, I have developed and invented a way that everyone should use to keep all that rain out of their camera while filming, so you don't have to retreat so far back when the rain starts pouring down.

Usually, blankets, bed sheets, and sometimes even towels, come in those zippered transparent plastic bags, especially at the store. If you have recently bought any of those items that came in one of those plastic bags, instead of tossing the bag, you can use it to keep your camera dry in the rain.

All you need to do is put your camera inside the plastic bag, zip the bag closed, and you will be great to go film the next severe weather event, as long as of course you don't stand close to or downwind of any big trees lest you get hit by falling tree branches! And neither should you be on any hills lest you get struck by lightning.

I do however need to say this, if there is a tornado warning, you should be indoors, preferrably in the basement, as especially the middle of the country far from any large bodies of water does tend to have a lot of very destructive and violent (F-3 and stronger) tornadoes.

I created a personal blog to write about my video adventures and to join the giving free stuff away community. I had downloaded so many free videos and other stuff that I really want to start sharing some of my videos with other producers all around. The first video that I want to give for FREE is one I recorded in a forest, in which I was acting like a soldier that apparently got lost in the woods. Read more of my adventure in my blog post.

Here is a behind the scenes video of my adventure. I talk about recording videos for you if you need something forest related. I also talk about a water stream that I found (for your reference please see my media bin for this clips)

I checked past forum and articles, too, and didn't find anything on point. Any suggestions?

My friend and I are going to be shooting in uncontrolled low-light settings later tonight in an urban downtown with plenty of streetlights/neon signs. We are using a panasonic AG-HMC40 and Canon Vixia HF S200 and it will be a chase scene. I was wondering what the best settings would be in order to get the clearest pictures.

We will be trying to be playing off the light and shadows a bit, so the image should be dark. What I am trying to avoid though is a mess of blurry/dark smudges moving around until the shot is over.

So in terms of contrast/aperture, gamma, and all those other settings I don't truly understand will most likely give us our best image?

Note: please don't suggest buying new filters/lighting kits. As much as we would love to own those things or have the money to get them, we just don't have the time or the money. Just focusing on in camera settings, thanks!

I record my sons soccer games for his high school. Recording is done from midfield at the top of the grandstand. On older fields where the pole mounted lights are lower and the lights are aimed more 'out' than down, the recorded video comes out with very poor color quality. It has a purple tinge throughout the entire video. On newer fields where the lights are higher and the lights are aimed more 'down' than out, the video is fine. It appears that the sport lighting is messing with the auto color settings of the camera. The camera is a Panasonic HDC HS250. Recording is typically done at 1920 x 1080 in full auto mode (iA on). I have tried several different modes and qualities and nothing seems to correct this. Any suggestions.

Hi All, I am new to the forum... I have a Sony DCR-HC38 mini DV and I am pretty happy with it but I would like to upgrade to HD. I would like to stay with that size but when I hit record it makes noise, I guess because the internal parts are moving the head to the tape... do all video cameras make this noise? When recording wildlife with excellent hearing, this is a negative. Any recommendations for a size comparable HD camera that will give a crisper picture and be quiet? Thank you.

I want to shoot the action of game fishing in the Florida Keys aboard boats. This entails a strong possibility of saltwater splashes, mist, heat, rain and a host of other events that could destroy a camcorder.

I have been using a waterproof point-and-shoot camera with video capabilities, and it does a respectable job for what it is, but it is not meant to shoot real video.

Does anyone out there have experience with this, and recommendations about protecting the camera? I could use a water proof case like an Ikelite used in diving, but what about sound?

Depending on the effect you're looking for, I would probably use a heavy, smooth vehicle like a Caddy or Lincoln and mount on the trunk lid with remote control camera. I'd drive forward to lessen the relative speed difference, using an appropriate lens (tele to speed things up and pack the bikers together in which case I'd drive faster, or wide to make it look more of an immense grouping and I'd drive slower to have their speed look faster).

If you drove just a little slower than the bunch, it'd be a good way to "introduce" each biker.

If you're going to shoot from the back of a bike at that speed, you're bound to have some wild vibes - but then that could add to the effect. I'd get out there and practice before the event.

You don't want to find out what you've got in post after the event. I'd have a friend follow behind (on a motorcycle, car, whatever) and run tests before the event.
