I have hundreds of VHS with videos of very valuable lectures. I want to capture it, enhance it, as it has degredated over last 25-30 yrs. The videos have lost colors, have disturbance in audio, I want to correct all deficiencies and preserve it for generations to come.

What is the best hardware as well as software to do this? What is the best format to preserve this?

OK, so I am a photographer and have recently started working with video, I have a Cannon Xf100 and a 5DM2. I shot a prayer service and was intially planning to create a 5 min clip with excerpts of all the sermons and speeches, but the pastors were so passionate, I ended up with a 2 hour video.

I edit in FCPX and would like to keep the video in HD, but the file size ended up something like 19 GB, so I hope this is not a dumb question but, what format should I use to keep the quality but still get it on 1 DVD? Or is not possible?

Thanks

With about 90,000 members to Videomaker, I am very curious as to how many of us are still using analog camcorders (VHS, VHS-C, S-VHS-C, 8mm, Hi-8, etc.). I find it hard to believe that all of the Videomaker members are ALL into digital only. I would like to have feedback from some analog members who still enjoy using this format vs digital (or maybe use both). If everyone was shooting digital only, then there would be no market for analog tapes. However, there are many outlets selling lots of analog tapes, including some of the camcorder manufacturers themselves.

Any comments ad feedback, please? Thanks folks.

I'm from Japan.

I'm really curious to know that how often Blu-rays are used in videography business around the world.

At our company, we're never asked to give the clients Blu-rays of completed projects. Most of the times, our projects are finally output to DVDs.

It's not that we are aggressively offering them the Blu-ray versions anyway...

Is it only me who thinks the ordinary people care less about High Definition??

Is there any chance of using VHS-C or VHS for presentation of my work to a studio or PBS or TVO (Canada)?

My new computer will have a 120GB SSD and a 1 TB 7200 mechanical HD. Obviously I'm going to put my OS, and some programs like Premiere Pro, After Effects on the SSD, and then I will put my games on the 1 TB along with other media like music, pictures etc.

But, while editing the movie files, where should I put them? On the SSD temporarily for faster rendering and access? Since I will sometimes be working with AVCHD .mov files which are highly compressed, will it be best to put it on the SSD where the OS is? Or should I put it on the 1TB 7200?

Also, I will be getting a USB 3.0 External drive, but right now my USB 2.0 external drive is practically full. It currently has the video files on it that I will be working with first.

Should I move them to the SSD? or to the internal 1TB?

Thanks!

before I pull the rest of my hair out
Looks like I found the right site. Have A LOT of studying to do here, I feel overwhelmed.
Where should I start? Thanks in advance if you take the time to read this.

Ok, specifics:
I just shot some legal meetings I need to send to a lawyer soon.
I had no choice but to shoot them in 1080i* MTS format and WAV files* from a separate recorder. All I need to do is make some basic splicing, replace the soundtrack, and convert to a more practical format. (DVD-Video, 360p XVID AVI, whatever.) Vegas Pro 8 was taking 10 hours to render 1 hour on my 1.9ghz Turion. Seems like it's either this or connect my blue-ray player to my MPEG2 capture device to make the conversion, but seems I would still have to recompress the video just to add the soundtrack. What would you tell a novice to do in this situation? What format would you convert to for this project. Loyer says it doesn't matter. Screw it, maybe I'll just give him the original mts and wav files or just record the damn videos with original soundtrack to VHS.
And I have to do this again next week!

I have many questions about camcorders and video production and should have been studying up on this and other sites that I'm unaware of. Just needed to throw this out there for now. Any other sites out there I can post questions like this.

*Why the hell do they make HD interlaced only cameras if CRTs are rarely seen these days?
*HOW HARD IS IT TO PUT A MIC JACK ON AN AVERAGE CAMERA?

Hello Everyone!

This is my first post on this site. I really need some
professionally opinions. My question is that I’m stuck trying to pick a camera
that will launch my videography career as a professional.

First I have about 2000 dollars to spend on the Camera and
Gear, here are my two choices. (If you has different idea I’d love to hear it)

1.) The
camera I want is the Canon 60D that’s about 1200 W/kit lens then spend the
rest on one more lens and then I need some audio support. For that I need to get a
microphone and a portable audio recorder and that should tape me out around
2000.

2.) The
2nd choice is NOT get a DSLR and just put all the money into a
professional video camera. Some models I have been looking at the Canon XA10 HD
Link
or the Sony HDR-FX7 Link
then put a shot gun microphone on the top through the XLR connection

Again I’m a little lost at what to
do? Are there real pro’s and con’s to these cameras? I do some event coverage
but mostly do promotional videos and online wed shows.

Hello all,

I'm sure there has be a question similar thrown around. I'm relatively new to Final Cut Pro and just purchased the Panasonic AG-HMC40 and am still learning it.

My question is how do I use the files my video is recorded to? If I put the SD card in my mac all the files are greyed out .cpi and when I try to connect with a USB nothing is recognized. I understand that .cpi is based of the MPEG4 codec and Adobe Premier can open it but is there any other way to go about this so I can actually edit?

Thanks for your time

I am at my wits end, I cannot seem to find any information on how I can take the 100's on .mts files I have and convert them to .mov files to use in FCP7.

In the past I have used mpeg streamclip, but that is because I did not have to keep the 1920x1080 specs, I was able to go lower. However for this project, I have to keep it at 1920x1080, h.264.

I have read on other posts conversion programs that cost $500, I can't afford to do that. I have Toast 10, I can't figure out how to convert to let it save on a hard drive, it only wants to output to a DVD.

Please help. I need to get this footage transferred this weekend.

It seems I cannot find a clear answer on this. I am building a dedicated editing computer for my videography business, and I have just about every component figured out that I need, except which kind of video card to use. I will be learning Sony Vegas Pro once I get it pieced together.

For the most part it will be straight forward editing from my MRC1 files (I believe they are AVCHD) and HDV from capture. This is mainly wedding based so I won't be creating really any 3D effects for the videos. Mainly just basic color effects, looks effects, old film effects, white balance, etc.

What kind of video card is recommended? I thought Quadro FX cards were the editing norm but after looking at them online I see little reviews here and there saying that your money would be much better spent on a higher end gaming card rather than a workstation card. I was looking at a Quadro FX 580 or 1800 even, but I am told that the processing cores they contain don't even match up to a decent gaming card. I know you can get a lot more bang for your buck on gaming cards - at least on the up front specs - but from what I understand the way the cards function are completely different.

My first thought before finding the couple bad reviews on the quadro cards for editing was a 2 way SLI Quadro FX 580, until I quickly realized that particular card does not suppord SLI. The 512 MB seems kinda weak, but I have never used a workstation card so I am at a loss. The 1800 is only 768MB, but the price seems more than doubled from the 580.

Now being unsure, I wonder if doing a SLI GTX260 would be better. Or even just one of the GTX 285's.

I am looking to spend $400-$500 on the video card side of this and hope to find the right choice.

Thanks in advance,

I'm shooting a video with a HD only camera. This will end up on a DVD. I'm using Final Cut Pro for editing. What are the best settings for a DVD? Frame size will be 1280 X 720. Now I have many choices for frame rate. 30p, 24p, 60i... Is it important whether I shoot in progressive or interlaced mode? Thanks for the help.

Hi I was wondering, I have a particular video that I want to burn to a dvd and watch it on my television unfortunately, my frame size of that particular video is 1280 x 720. And was wondering if the frame size is big, would there be some cuts at the edge of the video because the frame size is big? and what is the format and codec to play a dvd? also any video maker which is free is able to play .mkv files instead of .avi?

I'll be shooting at a reception that will last about 4 hours. Shooting time will certainly be between 2 and 3 hours! That will be a lot of data to transfer at 1080p. Since this will go onto a DVD, is it really worth it to shoot at 1080p or would 720p do the trick?

Is there any software I can use to compress a video file to write to a DVD. We are going the give our senior players copies of every home game. The raw video is on a 8.5 GB disc. Is there any way I can make it smaller because we are going to add some graphics, chapters and etc. Thanks

I know this is often an interesting, confusing, well discussed and maybe political type of issue ...

Currently, I use my DSLR (Canon 7D) and video camera (Canon HF-S100) to take video. The HFS100 ends up with .mts files - I was recently converting these to Apple Pro Res 422 files for easier editing on iMovie and Final Cut.

I want to convert my video files - mostly from the HFS100 to a format that I can in the short term utilize in my video editing and longer term have a logical format to come back and edit or use the files in later months/years.

This may be more of a 'best practices' type of question - what is the best format/file type for this? If I convert, is there any reason to keep the original mts file?

What is the best short term/long term for these video files - but, especially the HFS100 (mts) files?

Thank you!!

Hello,

I have a Canon Vixia HF S21. When recording I use the settings 60i for the recording mode. I also have a iMac i7 core. The computer is about a couple months old so that eliminates one problem. The only way that I know how to transfer files between my canon and mac is through iMovie. (I only use iMovie for transfere and Final Cut Pro for editing) When I transfer 60i clips from the camera and use iMovie to do the transfer i select ORIGINAL FORMAT. So the clips should be 60i. And when I right click on my clip, located on the harddrive it says in the properties 29.97. Why is that? Does iMovie convert the clips or is there something wrong with my software?

Summary:

How do you guys transfer AVCHD clips from a canon HF S21 to a mac and have them in 60i, just as they were recorderd on the camera?

Thank You in advance!!!

I'm planning on producing a fishing show to air in the spring of 2013. I'm planning on filming the spring and summer of 2012. I'll be doing all my research and homework to make this happen between now and next spring. The first thing I'm doing is looking into what video camera to get. That probably has some to do with what video format do most of the networks/cable stations prefer?

Hi there,

I use ubuntu 11.04 (linux) and cant find any software supporting MOV file (canon S95). I remember that I had same problem some time ago when using windows platform.

I'll be using software for editing diving movies, so I need something powerful but not too complicated... I find iMovie, which accepts MOV file, simple and reliable for this kind of work... Unfortunately, cant use iMovie on Ubuntu...

Need some help!! I've been looking around for some time but no success...

Thanks in advance!!

This is a Noob observation as much as a request. Two days ago I got a cool laptop. Acer8950g , very tasty with heaps of space and power. I loaded Vegas. I went and shot some stuff on my NEX VG 10. Plays beautifully from the card. When I load it to the editor Vegas swallows up the AVCHD beautifully. Everything renders rapidly .. I was outputting as a 1080p .avi. On playback the rendered movie staggers and stutters dreadfully off the hard drive. Other posts say it'll be OK once it's burned to a disc. I bought a bluray burner to generate the highest quality package I could offer. What do others think? I'm perplexed by the excellent video off the SDHC card and the end result.
