Really nice for a first timer, wish my first one looked that good. You need more broll in my opinion. I got board looking at the spokesperson talking. Part of promoting a product with video means showing your demographic what you are talking about. Perfect example in your pitch it said according to Neilson some percentage turn to the internet first. I dont remember the percentage after watching the video, because you did not show me. A simple cut away to a graphic background with that percentage listed in cg would help remind me. Anything that helps build creadability to your points needs to be both said and shown.

Also my biggest advice would be look up Aristotal's appeal methods, memorize them, then live by them. Every mainstream advertisment exhibits some form of either Ethos Pathos or Logos.

Finally if you want to hit your demo on a subconscious level look up the psychology of colors. There is a reason that you see red in almost every fast food restaurants logo, go learn about it. Gook luck and keep working, video is a never ending game of learning.

I would have kept the audio in both channels and the music bed a bit softer so that it provides ambience and doesn't take away or intrude upon the vocal. You could have used a bit more light, and I would have taken the to do list out of the background and masked out the chair scuff marks on the wall behind the talent, but not bad.

In other promotional videos I have done, some text or graphics on the screen at the same time the speakers is enumerating his points can help show the importance of a point and make it more memorable.

I personally like the office setting but it might have been better looking with more color (they were very bland) - Perhaps a green screen and virtual background/set might have been more appropriate.

The overall production was good but seemed a little to subdued for me - He is trying to sell a service and while Billy Mays (RIP) might be obnoxious, his enthusiasm was contagious and came through very strongly - Your pitchman sounded as if he was trying to sell cemetery plots or bibles, not business building websites.

As I said, I thought the production was very well done technically (editing, sound, lighting - ok maybe kill the desk lamp) but it needed more oomph.

Just MHO.

Hey all,

You all have helped so much when I was figuring out what "prosumer" equipment to buy, and many other technical questions i had. Â All the equipment is in, and a friend of a friend starting up a new business asked me to make a web video that he is intending to use on his website. It's my first video, and its obvious I'm not professional/experienced - my acquaintance knew this up front, and wasn't expecting professional. After seeing the video his comment was that he liked the video, but hated himself in it....and I'm not sure exactly where to go from there. Anyway, any advice on how to make my next video more professional, or how to improve upon this one? I'd appreciate any insight/advice you may have!

I've been taking video for years and have had a number of camcorders...Sony to Canon...but now want to get into documentary recording. My question is which camera do you all recommend under $2000? And why?

Thanks.

Tunguy, through a mixer you can send two mic signals to one track. I guess the need for this would be that your recording device only have one audio channel input. (We are talking monophonic in this case, all audio sources mixed to one channel).

Of course the example you put would be extreme because you are mixing two mics with very different responses and patterns. A better practical example is if you have two guys with lavaliers hooked to a mixer and the output goes to one channel of your recording device (Need to set the Panoramic control accordingly), A more complex setup would be to record a meeting with multiple speakers and microphones, but all can be mixed to one channel and no chance to rebalance the mix levels of each mic in post later.

I don't have a BeachTek but when I have used a mixer with two mics I sent one 100% to the left channel and the other 100% to the right channel which sends a sends a stereo signal to the tape. In my NLE I dup the audio track and work with each channel independently. It's really the same as audio mixing for non-video.

Can you explain to me how you get two feeds into something like the beachtek recording one one soundtrack? Sorry if I sound like a bit of an idiot, but I cannot understand how one can record from two sources(ie a shotgun mic on the cam and a wireless lav on a subject) and this goes onto one recording track on the tape.I mean , won't the sound be all garbled?

If you want to go the mixer route, you don't need to spend a lot of money - Musician's Friend has this mixer, 12 channel with 4 balanced xlr (including phantom power) for $80. I have used this for voiceover work with an inexpensive MXL condenser mic ($70) with good results.

Mixer: http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-EURORACK-UB1202-Mixer?sku=631236

I would go for the mixer or Earl recommendation. Probably you will need some degree of control over each mic line level before actually mixing them to one channel.

Another option, which will give you control over the levels of each microphone, is to use a mixer. As EarlC suggests, the BeachTek devices are great but pricey. Radio Shack makes an inexpensive 4 channel mixer that does a pretty fair job for a consumer-level device. Give it a try; just make sure your Radio Shack will let you return it if it doesn't work for you.

While a clapper may be useful, any short, loud noise will work the same way (including a hand clap).

Also, one caveat about using consumer grade audio with consumer grade video - when I first started out, I recorded a friends wedding - For the ceremony I used a personal voice recorder for audio and a consumer mini-dv camera for video and when I tried to sync, the audio was not an exact match for the video, causing me to have to match up audio to video for every 30 seconds or so - a lot of needless, extra editing. If you're filming short sequences with a clapper in front of each this shouldn't be a problem, but if you're filming 30 minutes at a time, it will be.

you don't actually need to connect them both to your camera. all you need to do is have a clapperboard, which you clap in front of the camera. you then line up the spike of the audio, with the spike of the audio that is from the camera microphone, and the video of the clapperboard clapping. that way you can have microphones that are just connected a standalone recorder and have as many microphones as you want, and it only limits you to post production editing (not by the fact that you are using a single audio jack).

You'd have to do some experimenting to see just how well it works, but I'd say you stand a good chance of using this inexpensive splitter to get the job done. It really depends on the mics and the specific camera and its audio circuits just how well it works for you.

There are also boxes like those made by BeachTek - active and passive - that offer a bit more control over what happens. You might go there and check things out if you don't mind spending quite a few more bucks, comparatively speaking.

There are video tutorials here (http://zaxwerks.com/training/?cat=4) about using DJ Fonts in Pro-Animator.

DJ Fonts are very simple to use by themselves in the Juicer however and you can render them out many ways so as to give you lots of control in your NLE.

Zaxworks does well for 3D Titling I have it and use it quite a bit never used the DJ fonts yet but would like to get it. I use a lot of the other DJ stuff they have I render it as an AVI file and then just drop it into Vegas no problems at all works great

Pseudo - The Juicer is a front end to DJ products but not a photo editor like PhotoShop. You can control certain aspects of the fonts - like characters, size, positioning and have a lot of control with layers, textures, colors, etc.... but it's really a different paradigm.

Rex - If you want 3D control of fonts (or other graphics) I would recommend Zaxwerks Pro-Animator (http://zaxwerks.com/proanimator/index.shtml) - It's pricey but my opinion is you wont find an easier to use 3D text animation solution. This one is on my "get it someday" list. Digital Juice has had it for 50% off as a partner special and probably will again. Write Dave Hebel and ask.

And for both of you - Look at the Digital Juice website - They have a lot of DJ Fonts video tutorials - They're under the DJTV & Training section.

Birdcat, from your detailed description it sounds like what I thought. Thanks. I think I'll pick it. But one more question. Are the fonts 3D? I want some fonts that are 3D that I can manipulate in the 3D editing tool in Vegas. I am tired of 2D fonts. Thanks, you have been a big help in figuring all this stuff out.

birdcat, just so i'm clear, DJ's Juicer would be similar to using Photoshop to work up some fonts and text into a logo, then saving that as a PNG or a JPG and using it in a video? In other words, you don't get to open your NLE and then type and edit DJ fonts in the NLE?

Hi Rex -

I have all eight volumes of DJ Fonts - They are great, and for June, volumes 2-8 are $50 each (two for $100).

They work as a standalone product using "The Juicer" - Their standalone front end to all their products.

You work with them in the Juicer (really easy and they have lots of tutorials on their site) and output the final product to a graphic image that you use in Vegas. Control and use is great, and with a few clicks and drags you can easily kern, adjust size and leading, etc...

They also have plugins available for the Juicer that allow it to do even more (like alternate colors, textures, size, etc...).

IMHO - A great product at a relatively low price ($5 or less per font).

I am thinking of purchasing DJ Fonts from Digital Juice. My question is; Has any one here used DJ Fonts? Can it be used in conjunction with Sony Vegas pro? Is DJ Fonts it's own program, and if so how do you import the fonts into Vegas? Do you create a movie file and drop them like standard media and then edit them into a project?Or do they work a different way?

Before I drop dollars on this, I want to know more about it. Any help would be appreciated. thanks
