I recently got a Canon Vixia HF S10 and am using it with Final Cut Pro. I've learned a lot looking things up online although I don't entirely understand them (for example...I changed the settings to prores, but I'm not so sure why, I compressed to a quicktime movie and entered new settings that meant nothing to me because thats what I supposedly had to do in order to post it HD on to vimeo.) But at least I know what to do even if I don't know why.....question one...is there someplace online that actually explains compression settings and teaches you when to use what settings on FCP or using the mac compressor. I've found tutorials that give you a recipe of what to do, but they don't really try to explain why its necessary. It'd be nice to be able to learn what every setting means so that I can use my own judgement for specific situations and not have to look up the compression setting recipe.

Question two: (the probably more naive question) I've seen on this board people saying that hooking up a camcorder to a computer through a usb or firewire can burn out the connection overtime and to use a deck for this purpose. What exactly is a deck, where would I get one, and what type of deck do I get (if there are a lot of different options)?

Thanks for any help as always!

There are constant questions on the forums about editing but most are strictly about technical aspects concerning a particular software. Rarely do I see questions about the 'process of editing' , 'how one tells a story' or 'how editing really works?' These are pretty important questions to know and without them in your answer bag just makes learning to edit on your own that much more difficult.

To give forth some answers to those questions and many others, here is a segment from the "Editor's Lounge" with some of today's top flight editors from the Hollywood, Television and Corporate Video production communities.

Is there a program out there that can compete with Adobe Photoshop CS4? I'm not a big Adobe fan and I would like an alternative to it for use with my Sony Vegas. Does everyone just use the built in effects? I have Windows. I am also trying to fix, improve, work on, vintage film for a documentary. Red Giant doesn't make Film Fix any more. What's my best bet? Thanks, Steve

I'm about to purchase the Panasonic AG-HMC150. The only problem I see is that many editing programs don't support the AVCHD and AVCCAM technology. Right now I use Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0. Can I use this program to edit AVCHD? If not what editing program would be a good program in general and one that would also support this technology?Â

Here's a video by Vallette Thierry showing how to map a photograph to a 3D object and then simulating a camera move. This is a really cool technique if you're pulling your hair out trying to build virtual sets for greenscreen. Now I've seen a similar technique built in After Effects, but this one is pretty direct. Now I'm not sure what 3D program was used, but the technique should be fairly simple to duplicate in other programs. If you're too broke to shell out for a 3D program, you can get BLENDER for free.

Im not sure if this is the right forum but...

For Christmas we bought ourselves an HDC TM300 Which is supplied with HD Writer AE 1.0. I have two questions.

1. I could not find a feature to convert or export the HD video down to AVI MPEG etc. However, the settings menu contains a Convert MPEG2 tab with quality settings. If I cant convert what is this tab about?

2. On a lark we decided to try out the Youtube up loader. After entering my Youtube ID and Password and selecting a test video the uploader indicated it successfully uploaded the file. But I could find it on youtube by searching to the title or in my uploaded videos on Youtube.

Happy New Year

Hi,

I am new to editing and was trying to make a 50th birthday video for my girlfriend. Unsure about what program to use I decided to do it on a trial version of Pinnacle 12. I worked night and day for 2 weeks the day before her birthday, I was putting on the final clip when the computer crashed. When I got it back up the program said there was no associated file and a 40 minute video seemed to be gone. I can see the file or what seems to be the file, but it doesn't seem to open in Pinnacle. The project was never render so it was still in project form. I tried contacting Pinnacle for help but they won't help.

Does anyone know if the file I see can be transferred to another software editing program or know any way I might be able to recovery any part of it. Oh, and no I didn't rename the file and save it somewhere else. I just kept re-saving it on my external hard drive. After reading things on line, I know now this might be a horrible lesson on saving files. I don't even need the whole thing back, if I could just get parts of it I would be happy at this point.

If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate. I'm just sick.

Thanks,

As a skater, all I'm really looking for is a software that can do good slow motion. I'm sure it also has to do with my lack of experience that I can't do good slow mo, but I just want to make sure it has that capability, like for example Windows Movie Maker can't do good slow motion because it only allows you to use the "slow down half" feature. I will learn how to make slow mo edits later, but first I need to find a consumer quality software that I can work with on practicing my slow motion. Can anyone please help? Thanks.

Is it posible to edit the same project through different programs? In other words, can I cut a project in Pinnacle, add some effects in After Effects and burn it in Vegas? If so, how? Whats format should i export it as? Will this effect resolution / quality ?

Thanks

Hello videomakers,

I am really stuck on what video converter works best! I've tried so many video converters and they either make the video speed 3x as fast, or they say that the conversion has failed.I'm trying to convert a mobile phone video (which is an MP4) into WMV or Avi. Nothing is working at the moment. Suggestions of what converter i should use?

Your help means a lot,

I finally have the powers that be here convinced to buy a Mac as our primary editing platform. The question now is whether to go with Final Cuts Studio or Adobe Production Premium. I use Adobe Premiere on a PC right now for editing. The one obvious advantage to sticking with Adobe is that I know the program and I like editing with the program. No learning curve as there would be with FCS. Can anyone convince me that there is enough of an advantage of going with FCS to make the learning process worth it?

On a more specific note, we do a lot of photo slideshows and Adobe Encore is the fastest, easiest solution I've seen for that application. I certainly don't want to make the decision on the primary editing platform based on that one very specific task, but if I do decide to go FCS, would also like to know if anyone is aware of a Mac program that will do that job as well as Adobe Encore. As far as I know there is not a stand-alone version of Encore available for Mac.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

What is the difference between consumer video editing software and 'real' NLEs (Non Linear Editing)?

Inexpensive Consumer Video Editing programs like Pinnacle Studio, Adobe Premiere Elements, Sony Vegas Movie Studio, Apple iMovie, Windows MovieMaker are easy and fun to use. In fact, I think they are pretty amazing. While these products can be purchased for less then one hundred dollars they deliver a level of performance and features that would have cost 10 times as much just 5 years ago!

While these products allow you to edit your video, create slideshows, author DVDs and export them to the web, the actual features are limited and if you want to do some serious vide editing, you will find you can outgrow them pretty quickly.

Consumer video editing products have trouble with long format productions. One of the biggest complaints we hear from consumer video editing software is that after 15 or 30 minutes the video editing become sluggish and the software can become erratic. Go even longer and more issues come up - the audio starts to become out of sync; the playback jitters; or worst of all the video and then the app just freezes up.

Advanced NLEs will all deliver perfect playback, regardless of the length and complexity of your production. If you are editing HD footage some formats and settings may require rendering before they will playback in full speed, but you will be able to adjust your playback settings in order to achieve a level of real-time that meets your needs. Most importantly they are extremely stable and reliable.

If you are running into any playback issues with an advanced NLE it is probably caused by data throughput bottlenecks in your computer. We have several articles on our website which can help you tweak and optimize your computer for NLE. If you take the time to optimize your computer for editing, you will find that you can edit for hours and hours without any crashes or performance issues.

Why do I want to invest in a "real" NLE for Video Editing?

Buying an advanced NLE like Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, Sony Vegas, Grass Valley Edius, or Avid Media Composer will not give you better video quality or make editing easier; what they will give you is a far more powerful set of tools that will allow you to be more creative and produce video content that is better and more entertaining to watch. The reason to buy one of these more expensive advanced editing programs is simple: to be able to tell your story better. That's what the heart of video editing is, taking a collection of media, video clips, audio, images and graphics - then putting them together to tell a story. The longer the story you want to tell, the more important it is to use more sophisticated tools to keep your audiences attention.

Once you decide to graduate from point and shoot productions and simple slide shows into storytelling you will want the right tools for the job. In this article we will go into some of the most important tools found in our advanced NLEs and their superior workflow.

Lately in the post threads I've been getting questions concerning the benefits / drawbacks of building a custom system versus buying a pre-built system for Non-linear Editing. To keep from taking over other posts I've opened up this one to specifically address these issues. Up front I am not a computer engineer by any stretch. However, since 1998 I've upgraded and built PC's and Mac's out of 'self-defense' because either it was too expensive to send out for repair or if I didn't do it, it wouldn't have gotten done. My current depth of knowledge leans strongly toward PC because it's still 'legal' to build them on your own. However, now with the resurgence of the 'Hackintosh' I am again taking an interest in 'mac clones'. So with all that in mind please bring your questions / comments about building and upgrading pc's and mac's, but spare us the PC' vs Mac' debate.

Thanks.
