PowerDirector 8 Ultra has some features for working with AVCHD not available in 8 Delux.

I have a Vixia HF11 and this is how I import the files. I record the clips to the built-in camera memory, 32 Gbs in the HF 11. In the camera I copy them to the removable SD card. I insert this card into my computer and move the PRIVATE folder to a folder I have created for the project. I import this PRIVATE folder into Powerdirector. I have found PowerDirector to be fast and easy to use.

I have a Canon Vixia HFR10 camcorder which came with a Pixela software package for video manipulation. The Pixela software is somewhat limited, so I purchased Power Director 8, but I've been having trouble trying to capture HD files from either the camera or the computer. Power Director 8 has a tab in the capture menu for transferring high def files from the camcorder to the program. I instucts the user to connect the camera to the computer and import the files as though the camera was a separate computer drive. Easier said than done. When I connect the camera to the computer, it automatically goes into a mode that connects with the Pixela software. I don't see any way to capture the HD files. Similar problem with the computer. If I convert the files to SD MPEG2 files, I can get them into the Power Director, but I'd like to work with my AVCHD files. Does anyone know how I can solve this?

Thanks,

I ordereda Video Capture device from Tiger Direct and it came with Cyberlink PowerProducer and PowerDirector. When I plug the capture device into the computer and try to download the video, I get a couple things that I'm not sure about.

1. There are a ton of "Dropped" frames. What is that?

2. When I replay the video I downloaded, I don't hear the audio. Why is that?

If I may----------On working with MTS/AVCHD files, which are large,I will convert the massive files to smaller(WMV.HD) files, but save the (MTS)originals to a portable USB Media Drive for later use with a more sophisticated software if I wish. One of my fave programs for converting is "Free HD Converter",from Koyote Soft, and "Aunsoft Video Converter".When putting it all together, keep in mind Im still a newbie,I use one of 2 programs, mostly Power Director 8,of Windows Live Movie, which both do a good job,PD is a Bit more advanced and has more features though...........

I think an article "The MPEG-4 Super Hero" by Mark Montgomery in the Sept. issue of Videomaker, p. 58 is relevant here. It points out that a program that edits AVCHD natively, like I believe PowerDirector 8 Ultra does, is good for simple projects that don't have a lot of effects and need to be done quickly. While more complicated projects with many layers and color corrections etc. may better be done with a program like Adobe which first converts everything to AVI. This is because editing unconverted AVCHD file requires a lot of computer power, i.e. if you want to edit natively with complicated effects you need a very faster computer or convert the files to AVI. On the other hand if your need is for simple editing done quickly then a program like PowerDirector may be your best choice. My work is mostly current events where getting it out fast, within 24hrs max, is most important so PowerDirector fits my needs very well. Converting files or adding special effects just slows things down. Adobe would take at least an hour to render (i.e. convert) files even for a short project while I can start editing right away with PowerDirector.

My only experience has been Cyberlink, so I found Robert's comment above about Adobe interesting. I guess I didn't know how good I've got it.

Regarding longer videos... I've edited videos up to an hour long without issues. The software does crash sometime, but that seems to happen regardless of the video length. It seems to happen most when I try to use the computer for something else simultaneously, so I think the memory swapping processes are getting confused.

If longer videos are an issue, a possible solution is to edit each chapter as an individual video, render each one, and then combine the rendered files into a finished full length video.

Hello, I am thinking about purchasing Power Director 8 to edit my company's instructional videos to DVD. Our first title was edited by someone else with Adobe Premier. I would like to edit our next title, myself because I was not totally happy with this persons efforts. My questions are:

1.)can this software handle a 1 hr 45 min project?

2.)can I create custom menus with my own choice of background color and text font?

3.)Will it work on good computer running Vista?

Thanks, jgaertner

As one of the few participants to these forums who doesn't make feature films I would like to add my own experience to Derek's excellent review of PowerDirector because it pertains to some of the themes in these forums, like how to deal with AVCHD and .MTS files. I have vision 8 Ultra. I find that it handles the AVCHD .MTS files from my Canon HF11 directly with ease and without any conversion. Aside from the problems of shutting down that I and others have had with Adobe, Adobe needs to render everything before editing can even start. This can take more than an hour even with a short video. On top of this, every added Adobe transition, title etc. also needs to be rendered. This greatly slows down the editing process.

Just as we need different knives for different tasks, so do we need (or can use) different programs/software for different editing tasks. There are people who "get by" with plastic utensils, and there are those who prefer state-of-the-art cutlery. Everything is useful to the limits of its ability (and ours) and when common sense is shown in their application.

Like Dirty Harry once told us: "Mans gotta know his limitations." Same with knives and software.

Thanks Derek,

I was worried I might end up having a problem like I did with Adobe where after awhile it would just shut down when I tried to reload a project ,requiring drastic repair like setting up a new user account or restoring my system to factory setting. I guess that experience left me a little spooked. However so far PowerDirector has been stable.

Let's say your working on an hour long film, this isn't the most ideal in one timeline. It's a great application just doesn't have the support for projects that require an organization structure, etc. For the price you can't go wrong.

Dear Derek,

In your review of Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 you state as one of its weaknesses that it "Lacks reliability on longer projects". Since I use this software I would like to know your basis for this statement. I didn't see anything in the review supporting this. Is there something I should look out for?

Trial users who purchase the product will get an activation key that unlocks the software, plus an activation pack that adds features not included in the trial (which is designed to be a smaller download).

Of course, everyone who purchases PowerDirector for download from our website gets the full retail version (the same software that is in the boxed version). Plus, you get access to DirectorZone, where you can download additional DVD templates, titles, objects and motion objects.

I have the full (ultra) version of Cyberlink PowerDirector 7 - very nice, entry level pro quality consumer software.

Yes, I believe you get the full software package when you purchase and install PowerDirector from the website. You will definitely get it if you buy the retail (box) version. If you are "Upgrading" (from an older version), the price will be lower and setup might be a bit different. Ironically, I had PowerDirector 6 on one PC, and was able to purchase an Upgrade to v. 7 and install it on another system with no records of an earlier version.

As I think I was maybe responsible for getting this new section added I will kick it off with this question -

Most of the new users will download the trial version of PD7 as I did recently.

What actually happens when you decide to buy? Does it download the whole lot again or just the extra stuff not already included in the trial version?

Thanks,

Phil.

PS It is supposed to be a 30 day trial but I was unable to use it after only 18 days - today. I have sent a query email to them.

I have a dell PC Intel Core 2 6400 @2.3Ghz 2MB Ram 250 Hard Drive 256Mb ATI Radeon x1300 pro video card Vista Home Premium. I am using Power Director 6 softwear. Some times when I am editing it freezes up or stops working. Or just takes a while to process the cut or change I make. I think my processor should be fast enough. Do you think a better video card would make any difference??

I am new to editing and purchased Power Director 5 as my editior. I want to caputure quality video from my digital camcorder with a DV connection to make quality DVDs.

There are a lot of settings to do that and you can make and save a custom profile. Screen Resolution size, mpg1, mpg2, etc.

What settings would you use to make quality DVDs to play on a TV? I have ample disk space available.

Thanks,
I too am unfamiliar with power director. I have seen it but never used it. From what I have seen it looks like a similiar program I have used in the past. Check to see if there is a way to split the videoclip at the playhead rather than clip it. That way it seperates the clip into two parts to do what you want with.

I'm not familiar with that program either, but if it works like most of the others, all your edits are only making changes to a text-like file that the project uses.

In other words, you're not really cutting your AVI video file where your trim occurs. That file will remain intact, thus there is no need to "save" the piece you're cutting off, or the one that remains. You only need to save your project so that it will remember your edits.

You should be able to go back into your project assets and even reuse the AVI clip and trim it somewhere else, further down in the timeline.

I do not use Power Director, but my guess is it works like other editing programs when it comes to trimming clips.

If I understand your question correctly, you're trying to do one of two things.

1) You're trying to save the piece you're trimming off. If that's the case, you cannot do that. (Why would you want to?) Keep in mind that trimming off a piece of video does NOT affect the original captured video from which you're editing, so you're not losing the trimmed off piece forever.

2) You're trying to save what's left of the video after you trim off what you don't want. Again, I'm not familiar with Power Director, but I have to believe there's a way to save your finished, edited video as a new video file. Check the program's help file.

If I misunderstood what you're trying to do, I apologize.
