Hi everyone,

I have done lots of weddings and web-videos (talking heads), so I'm not new to video production, but I have recently been asked to help put together an informational video for a school. We're doing this at a very low cost for them so I would like to be as prepared as I can be in pre-prodcution so I can deliver a great product with minimal production/editing time.

It will only be a 3 minute video with a few talking heads and some action b-roll shots. It's basically going to be used on their website to quickly bring some of the school's highlights to the viewer's attention. The point is to sell this school as a great place to send your kids.

I understand this may be an "everyone does it differently" answered question, but because I've never done this I would some insight into pre-production workflows.

Are there pre-production documents that I could use to assist my working with the client in piecing this together? Anything you've learned the hard-way (even contract-wise) which I could learn from you?

Thanks for any advise!

-Stephen

Greetings. I have been looking for ways to make money with the video skills I learned in college. I came to the conclusion that I could easily shoot real estate photos and videos for agents in the small community I live in. (I will be getting a Canon D7 in the coming months, so would use that.)

The idea is, going to the major real estate firms out here, I think its only 2. Going to them with the option to contract me as there video/photo guy. Instead of connecting with the countless agents, and working for them. Connecting with the firms itself. so that when any of its many agents needs photos or video, the firm just says "we got a guy for that, we'll send him out tomorrow."

Is this a somewhat good business plan for such a venture? And if so, how would I appropriately charge for such a service? a standard by the hour rate? Or on a per visit system? And what would be an appropriate cost for such work? I wanna make money, but I also wanna be competitively priced. I can debate semiotics in film, but was taught NOTHING about video business practices in college lol. So any comments or thoughts are welcomed.

Thank you for your time.

I work in the trucking industry. I play with video. I recently approached my GM about an video marketing idea for a new product that is coming out, basically a testimonial and an installation video and copywrite. This would be my first paying gig. I was wondering what I should do next to seal the deal? I have a meeting Monday to talk about this project.

Hi all,

I have created a website for selling video online. The main focus is on the seller having full control over the access being sold, allowing for multiple buying options per video. The following are some of these options available so far (of which all can be independently configured for a selling option):

The duration which a video can be accessed before access is disabled

The amount of bandwidth which can be streamed before access is disabled

The rate at which the video can be streamed (e.g. 512Kbps, 8Mbps, etc.)

Whether the video can be downloaded or not, and what bitrate encodes (e.g. allow downloads with quality suitable for an ipod)

For subscriptions, what cycle a particular video can be accessed (i.e. the buyer doesn't have access to everything from the start, there is incentive to renew the subscription each month)

The site also has the ability to create private discussion groups and blogs with control over who can join and access.

The payment method is paypal with 100% of the purchase price going straight to the seller's account. The cost of using the site is still to be nailed down but will range from free to something like $25, $50, and $100 (for low, medium, and high usage).

The site is still in early beta so I am looking for people with the intention to sell their videos in a marketplace to try it out and provide some feedback.

Anyway, get in contact if you want me to create an account for you to use the site free of charge. Again, the site is in beta so I would not be using this for actually selling content to real buyers, more for testing that it works the way you would want so that when it comes out of beta it is something that you could really use and get value from.

Regards,

Gavin

Hi all. I'm making the jump from hobbiest to pro and need to know what to charge clients for gigs?

For example if someone wants a wedding done on DVD or Blu Ray what do I charge and for how much finished footage?

My first gig is for 5 and 10 minute promotional films for businesses that are designed to go on the businesses website. What should I charge for these gigs?

I need to find a streaming service like You Tube or Vimeo for promotional films. You Tube has to many adds and pop ups and Vimeo doesn't allow commercial content. Can anyone suggest anything else that can be used for embedding into websites? I don't want to use flash as iPad and iPhone will struggle with it.

Just was informed a few weeks ago that my insurance carrier will no longer supply liability insurance to me at any price. No claims. Ever. While shopping for a new carrier, we keep getting the same answers. That Video Production is considered a very high risk area in terms of lawsuits, particularly if you are doing weddings. (Which we don't-but that didn't make the slightest difference) This is the first I've ever heard of this, but our agent went through half a dozen companies and we are now uninsured, which means my equipment sits gathering dust while we resolve this. Has anyone else run into this situation? I understand the need for coverage in case someone trips over the mic cord and hurts their pinky, but the example the agent gave was a unhappy bride suing because she didn't like the video and so her wedding memories are ruined. (Say what?)

Any help here?

Thanks

I moonlight as an event videographer. Mostly school productions. I have been producing and selling my videos the old-fashioned way – burn to DVD, duplicate, package in jewel cases, and ship or hand-deliver to customers.

Now I'm thinking of eliminating the discs and putting the video image on a web site where customers can purchase and download.

Has anyone out there in the event videography business gone online with their sales? What's the best way of setting it up?

My major reservation about going online: Are the potential customers comfortable with buying a video online, or we stuck with discs for a few more years?

Look forward to hearing your responses.

So I'm trying to start up a small-time production company and I very much want to do some corporate/commercial type of stuff. I'm having a heck of a time figuring out how to advertise my production services. We have one local business to business newspaper. I'm curious how else people reach business clients (other than the usual Craigslist and word of mouth routes).

Here's a really good audio discussion from the 'Terrance and Phillip Show' Podcast. (no southpark relation and no fart jokes) T&P discuss the topic of how the quality level offered by trained film & video professionals is becoming unnecessary because of lower expectations of 'quality' in digital media these days. From film to Mpeg4 and from Vinyl LP's to MP3's and more what is determined as a quality product has changed considerably.

As those who are working pros, Intermediates looking to go pro or Hobbyists or Novices what do you think a 'quality' looking/sounding film or video is and what level of quality would you be willing to produce or buy? Should you make your final product high quality as possible or just get it to where it's good enough? What do you think good enough is? Do you think low quality films and video are ruining the film and video business by just being good enough?

Is Good Enough, good enough?

This is our first music video which was shot about few months ago. The team of MuseProduction (which is a division in MyWeddingWay which is focused on advertising and music videos) is always in search for a new projects outside the narrow niche of wedding cinematography. We had been contacted b...y a starting musician named Sparkz who just recorded his new song Indefinite Love and wanted to make a music video for his new composition. For this project we did not have any budget, but we really liked the song Indefinite Love so we made the decision to try ourselves in the are of clip-making. It was a great pleasure to work with Sparkz and his team, guys where passioned and devoted following our directions and recommendation. All the footage was shot on Canon 5d mk2 with the usage of prime lenses. One of the challenges that we have faced was zero budget which is why most of the scenery we had to shoot in a small apartment in Brooklyn. Taking into consideration all the obstacles we are pretty happy with the feel and look of this music video, it has been awesome experience.

I need to shoot lifestyle shots of a product in use for on-line promotion. I would like shoot talent in various settings i.e. restaurants, upscale LR/kitchens, office, etc. How do you find locations for interior home shots? Have tried family and immediate friends homes, but not suitable. Do you typically pay for shooting in residental home or commercial business and should I have owner sign release sheet?

Hi

I'm filming a short movie to promote a DJ. This will be at a wedding reception - so shots of him at the console, people dancing, general party atmosphere etc. Not sure how I stand with copyright as the core of his service is to play the songs of various well known recording artists.

Question: What company is the lowest but best quality for all that I noted above?

Thanks for your help!

We are a small production company breaking into the documentary field.

Question: What are the BEST companies with the BEST quality stock footage (royalty FREE) on DVD? Note: We are looking to only spend a couple hundred dollars. Note: The stock footage must have a multitude of clips from various subjects (science, math, art, etc). It should also include special effects and people. Note: We require the stock footage for right now in DV quality NOT HD.

Thanks for your help everyone!

I have enjoyed, and learned a lot reading this forum the last few months. I would describe myself as semi-pro as I have done some free videos for non-profits but have also made some money on some corporate information and training videos.

I am not sure how the local stations are where everyone else lives but the affiliates here tend to run a lot of local commercials, especially during the local news programs. The quality of most of them are questionable at best - poor lighting, even worse audio, low quality graphics.

Does anyone here have any experience with local commercials? How do you "get into" this business? Are the local news stations shooting these for almost nothing just to get advertisers for the news? While not in a top 10 market, this area is the 36th largest tv market and there seems to be a viable market for tv commercials (Auto dealers, applicance sales centers, etc)

Hi Everyone:

Our company has completed a documentary recently that deals with many subjects such as science, economics, and food. There are 6 people on the documentary that discuss the noted subjects.

Question One: How do I go about getting my documentary nationally in independent theaters across the USA?

Question Two: What are the BEST distributor companies in the USA that will purchase my documentary to sell online and in-stores?

Question Three: How best to get the word out in regard to my 'grass-roots' documentary?

Question Four: What are some of the BEST networking sites to join and get the word out about my new documentary?

Thank you ahead of time for your help!

success999 on "Talent Release...Opting out after the fact?"

Hi Everyone,

Issue: My production company produced a video for a client. The client provided talent for the video production. The main talent (one individual) has decided to not be in the final edited production. This one person (talent) did sign a talent release form giving their permission that the footage would be used in the final edited production. Update: The talent notified me via phone and email that they did not want to be in the final edited production.

Question: What is my legal duty to honor his wishes to not be in the final edited video? Can I be sued as a production company if I knowingly still keep him in the final production even though he wrote to me and made it clear that he does not want to be in the final edited production? Do the laws vary from state to state or are they federal laws, etc? Note: The said talent did sign and date a talent release form. I have read that the talent release is not always written in stone and that the talent can always ask to be edited out at anytime - perhaps if I refuse to honor his wishes he can sue me and the client?

Thank you ahead of time for anyone who can help me with this very important questions.

I'm producing a documentary and I'd like to use some clips from Hollywood. I can find the owners on the web. Question: how do I approach them? Do I send a letter, or is there an agreement I should already have that I can send to them? Anyone have experience or ideas to share?
