Hi All,

I want to buy a camcorder for making short films... I want as good quality as possible and by that I mean I would like to get as close to film as possible (without shooting on film :p). That would mean at least HD1080, 24 frames... ability to shoot slow motion (60-120 or higher), shallow depth of field is also a must.

I'm looking to spend around $5-7K any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Hello ,

I need to purchase an HD hard drive base camera that I can stream video directly from for a ustream show. All the cameras that I have researched are all old Min DV cams that have this capability because the new cameras do not come with firewire.

Even if there is a way to plug the camera into a DVR device and stream directly to my computer would work as well. Any solutions at all I'm open to, Thanks!

Biggest thing is tape vs/tapeless of course; any input? Have used Canon DV cams for past 10 years. Also have considered the XL-H1s, because it looks and feels more like our current XL1s cams.

I'm sure this question has been asked many times before! I am interested in knowing if a Prosumer camcorder exists in the $2000.00 price range, that has a professional appearance, Fairly good sound recording, and good picture quality, even in lower light situations, or am I just fooling myself that this could be out there.

I've been directing local news for a few years, but just graduated college and am wanting to make a switch to local production/marketing companies. I know a couple of local business owners who have agreed to let me shoot commercials for them to help build my portfolio as i start applying for these positions. I use final cut pro and the adobe suite on my 20 inch imac. I just received a lot of graduation money, and I am wondering what camcorder would be proficient enough to shoot professional quality commercials for the smaller-sized market. I'm thinking anywhere in the 800 - 1300$$ range would be great. I appreciate any advice you can give - thanks!

Hello Everyone,

I am looking at getting into getting a camera for both shooting weddings, special event, etc and also short movie, Full length movies and documentaries. I am having trouble deciding between cameras.

I would like to get the Sony HDR-HC1 for its HD ability compact size and abiltiy to use mini dv tapes.

I am also looking at the Panasonic DVX100 DVX-100A for it's professional features and good reviews for this type of shooting.

Question is, will the HC1 work for short movies and even indie filmmaking or would the DVX100a be a better choice.

Thanks.

After picking up a lot of video skills in the past seven months, I realized how important it is to get a good, solid recording of location sound. I have recently uploaded a "blog" to my FTP site titled "Adding Microphone Input to JVC Everio Camcorder" (got advice from here). This blog was created specifically for JVC Everio models, but has the same characteristics for any camcorder - you just need a place inside of the camera to house the jack.

Hi everyone, and my apologies if this thread is in the wrong section,
but..

I've just got some tax money back and have sold my old GL2 and a bunch
of accessories.. I now have about $2500 to spend, and I want to get the
best HD camera(s) I can for the loot. I plan to not only shoot short
films and music videos, but also wedding videography and commercials.

I was almost entirely sold on a 5D mark II or possibly a 7D, but I came
to the realization that those cameras, awesome as they are, aren't real
great for weddings (the 12 minute video clips, possible overheating,
zoom/focus would be trickier, would have to buy a separate audio
recorder).

So I'm left with the option of camcorders. My idea was that for the
money I have, I should be able to get a Panasonic HMC40 and potentially
also a Panasonic HDC-HS300 as a second camera. I've been pouring over
the specs and reviews for both cameras and feel I have a pretty decent
understanding of their shortcomings (poor low light, etc) but that is
where I'm at.

Would love to get a HMC150 for the controls as well as CCD over CMOS,
but finding one for $2500 hasn't happened.

So I'm asking everyone out there.. Does my plan to get these two cameras
sound good for the money, especially in the light that I aim to start
doing weddings seriously? I'd still need a wireless lav, but that
wouldn't be too big a problem.

If any of you have a better idea or camera choice for the money, I'd
love to hear it.

Thanks in advance,
Nick

Good day. I am VERY new to this forum and gatherin as much intel as possible on camcorders, editing software, etc. to ensure I make educated, smart decisions on a future purchase.

I am challenged at work to create a proposal for a new camcorder to create in-house videos for our organization (we are in the meat processing industry).

Videos will range from production floor training videos, State of the Business/Executive Addresses, recorded interviews, shots of our processing environment for recruiting/job fairs, creating fun internal videos of associate life/culture, creating short educational YouTube videos for our customers/consumers, etc. So we have multiple applications that we would like to look semi-professional, but at the same time, we do not need something that is too professional in nature.

We currently have a camcorder (sorry it is not in my posession so I cannot give specifics) that shoots miniDV that is a large shoulder mount, but it is almost overkill for our current needs and skill-set.

What we KNOW we want is as follows:

Something that records in digital media (at our current level, we do not understand the value of tapes over digital and with no clear reason for one over the other, we would like digital for ease of use).

Something that shoots in low-ish light (while our associates do not work in low-light environments, footage we have captured with the old camera had a tendency of giving us dark video... could have been user error on the camera side).

Something that can operate in a cold environment (production floor temps average freezing... while we have not had issues with our camcorder in the past, we have had issues with shutter speed on cameras, so I thought this was worth noting).

Something that is small to medium sized (the large, shoulder mount camera was a bit too obtrusive and frankly intimedated associates from using it simply based on size).

External microphone jacks is a plus

LED viewing screen is a plus

HD would be optimal, but SD may be okay for what we are doing

So, this purchase is kind of a phase 1 as we move into the media relm (technology is slowly adopted in our industry). We want to increase our skills with this camcorder before moving on to bigger and better.

ALSO, we currently have Adobe Premier Pro 1.5. Is this a good program for begginer/intermediate editing or should be consider exploring some more options there too?

Thank you VERY much and if I missed anything, let me know and I will answer those inquiries.

Hi. I am buying my first professional HD camera. So far I have been testing the waters with a Canon Vixia HF200, but now I need something with full manual controls. I am using Final Cut Pro 7 for editing.

So far my choices are:
Sony HDR-FX1000
Canon XH-A1s
Panasonic HMC-150
Sony HXR-NX5U

Of these, the former two are tape based while the latter two are card based. I have been advised to use tape as it is better for learning and backups. I have been using AVCHD transcoded to ProRes 422 and it works very well with FCP. I review all my shots through log and transfer and don't just blindly copy them over, so I am okay there. I also have a good backup system.

So, which one should I get? My personal bias is towards the Panasonic, and there is a nice kit deal on B&H right now. Any advice/comment is much appreciated.

 Hello friends,

I know this question gets asked at least daily, But here goes...

I am considering the jump to HD, I currently use sony dsr250 shoulder mount and v2000 handheld. I am considering HD if I can find a comparable model shoulder mount with about the same controls ie-manual focus, manual exp etc... Any suggestions from users? Are the avchd models any good? will a handheld match the quality of a shoulder mount?

I shoot primarily weddings and a few music vids..

Thanks for any feedback..

I have been looking to upgrade to a new prosumer camera for taping live shows for rock bands and to create my own films with. Some things the camera would have to have are XLR inputs for taking input from a sound board, customizations for video details (like Gamma Curve, Colour Matrix, Knee, Black Press/Stretch, etc), long recording times, 3 CCD sensors, HD video (at least 720p), independent gain controls, and good basic video controls (Focus, Zoom, Iris, Gain, Shutter Speed, ND Filters, White Balance, etc).

I have found some that I am interested in. The Canon XH A1, the Panasonic AG-HMC150, the Panasonic AG-HMC170, and the JVC GY-HD110U. If anyone knows what the quality of these cameras video capabilities are or have any suggestions for other cameras, feel free to tell me about it.

A good thing to note is that I am using Final Cut Express for editing.

Thanks,

Hi everyone!

I am currently putting business plan together to try an obtain a loan from the bank to start my own business filming weddings and corporate videos.

As a side plan though I was hoping to use the camera to make short films. I had my eye on the Panasonic HPX170 as I was drawn to the high quality it delivers. Unfortunately it appears to be a P2 system and event filming is out of the question.

I am torn between purchasing a camera which can be used for weddings but more importantly one which can deliver the best quality for short films.

Thanks in Advance,

Advice on either prosumer or top end consumer camcorder for just starting out pro shooting team sports, individual sports tryouts, sports training... also possible real estate... very basic product shots... family histories. NO weddings and no big events - at least not yet! Ideally, I'll be shooting video with minimal editing required. I think I need a camera with good optical zoom & audio input jacks, and absolutely need a camera with easy-to-operate controls, both manual and auto. I like the idea of a shoulder mount unit and also prefer the larger size of those cameras, but is that overkill? I would use a tripod for 90% of shots, but there will be times where being entirely mobile to get around crowds in bleachers and sidelines will be necessary. Is a mini-dv ok or should I look at hard drive/flash/memory card models? Budget - preferrably $1500.00 or less. Also, is buying used a big risk or pretty standard? Thanks!

I know that HD camcorders in general require more light than comparable SD camcorders, due to the light being divided up among many more pixels, but what about HD camcorders when shooting in SD mode?

When shooting SD with a HD camcorder are the pixels in someway combined so that the light received by each one is added together to produce more light reception by the lesser amount of combined pixels?

Or when shooting SD are the extra pixels in essence thrown away, so regarding light levels/exposure you get the same as you would shooting HD?

I hope that isn't phrased to idiotically, but to help I'll explain why I'm asking. I shoot live rock shows, so low-light performance is very important. Currently we shoot with SD camcorders, which is fine since 90% of what we produce is for online distribution only. But HD is becoming more and more the norm, and we'd like to produce more content with a high enough quality for DVD distribution or even just higher quality online distribution.

So I'm looking into getting HD camcorders, but at least for times when I know that HD is not required I'm wondering if I can shoot with them in SD mode and get the improved low-light performance that you do from SD cameras?

Okay, I posted a few months back but it looks like i'm getting a bigger budget than expected, I should have around 3k.

The camera will be used for my church (promotional vids, taping of service, etc). A lot of footage will be shot in 'low-light',(I guess because that looks more reverent, lol). HD is NOT a requirement, but I do understand the idea of looking into the future, but for now the most powerful computer we have to edit on is running a single P4.

With that in mind I've narrowed it down to 3 cameras:

DVX100B

Sony FX1000

Canon XH-A1

In the past I have used Canon XL 1's and have been disappointed (maybe it was the ones' I was using) because there was quite a disparity between what you see and what you get (grain-wise). Also they performed pretty lousy in low light.

I have used the Sony VX2100's as well and was very happy with the low-light images.

I have NEVER used a Panasonic, but hear great things about them...soooo, should I give Canon another chance? stick with Sony? or just go for a robust SD (DVX100B)?

I hope the following makes some sense...

Before you ask the “Which is better…?” or “What do you recommend…?” type questions, please consider a few things first.

What is your application? What are you going to be doing with your item? Is it just for family type events? Are you just getting started and want something to try out? What is your current skill level? What is your budget?

Reviewing a lot of these types of posts, people appear to have some level of mis-conception that they are going to be able to sit down and knock out award winning material overnight, and make lots of money doing it next week, if they have the right tools. Oh, and you only have $1000 to work with.

Think back to the days when you were trying to learn how to write. You saw your mom or dad write letters to family and were amazed at the wonderful squiggles on the paper, and that those squiggles actually told a story. Try as you might you, could not duplicate what they were doing. And what you did create didn’t make any sense.

You could have the best pen and the finest paper on the planet, but those first attempts probably looked like some foreign hieroglyphics. It took practice and repeated exercises over time before you had something easily legible. All you needed for that practice was a pencil, eraser, scratch paper, and some instruction. As you got better, you now had to spell words correctly and get them in the right sequence for your sentence to make sense. Here was where that pencil came in real handy. You could erase you mistakes an try again. As you improved, sentence structure became more important. You had to increase you vocabulary, improve your ability to spell these new words you were learning, and learn the proper sequence to use them in so they continued to make sense. For many of us, we are still learning how to do this at some level well within our adult years.

With video it is very much the same thing. The tools you have, camera, computer, editing software, are all meaningless if you do not know how to use them. If you are just getting started, look at that $200 camera to start with. This will be your pencil. Use that free movie editor that came with your PC or that you can download off the internet. That will be your scratch paper. Go out and shoot some video. This will be your vocabulary. Make sure those scenes are saying what you want them to say. This is learning how to spell those new words. Use the movie editor to put those scenes in the right sequence to tell your story so it makes sense. If something is not working, go out and reshoot the scene. This is your eraser. When you can pretty much do all this with your eyes shut, and the tools no longer can do what you need them to do, then start looking at the next camera, editing software, computer to help you progress along.

When you ask,”What is the best camera?” and you cannot articulate for what purpose up front, are you really ready to get one? And it makes it very hard for anyone to provide a proper answer.

Hello Everyone,

I'm looking for a pro/prosumer HD camera to film indoors/outdoor lectures and public events. I always used from 2 to 3 cam to record religious lectures/events (1-speaker, 2-speaker/audience, 3-comp projector) I have 3 Sony VX2000 for SD recording and 2 Sony HDR-FX1 for HD/wide recording. My output is to mainly DVD and sometine youtube/web. Sometime in a large auditorium or conference room, I was not able to place the camera close to the speaker and had trouble of capturing the speaker face closed up.

I need a new cam which allow me to record in HD from a distance (100 ft +). Sony brand is preferable because all of my existing camcoders and accessories are Sony. Any advice or suggestion of prosumer or pro HD camcorder with interchangable lense is greatly appreciated. My budget max is under 10K.

Thanks,

Hello All,

Do any newer HD camcorders with flash drives have a 3.5mm a/v plug input. I have several helmet cams and I'd like to use an HD camcorder for media storage when not using it as a camcorder. I realize my helmet cam footage will not be HiDef, I'm simply looking for a way to record onto solid state media... and also have an excellent HD camcorder...

Thanks all, I'm new to the forum...

Hello,

I'm looking for a prosumer HD camera to film indoors interviews, product shots, and people at work in the office/lab. I have a light kit but would like a camera that works well in low light so I can get good around the office shots. My output is to youtube/web and occasionally to a projector in a meeting. I want to be able to do depth of field and manual focus. I am considering the Sony HDR-FX7, do I need to be concerned with the CMOS/CCD debate for my application? Any other suggestions? My budget is ~$1K-2.2K
