Robert,

Really depends on how much cash you want to chuck at this and whether you're more comfy working in the mac or pc environments. Just so you know the majority of the systems you see demoing CS5's MPE are tricked out with lots of high-end RAM (up to 32GB), dual multi-core CPU's (8-12), Solid-State Drives on at least the OS drive and the mid-range or better of the 3 NVIDIA GPU's recommended. Just those components alone are verrrry expensive. For a workstation like that, cheap is not the operative word. At that level Mac's or PC's cost pretty much the same give or take a few thou' here or there.

If you're not into building your own workstations then as I said pre-built mac's or pc's are your only bets. Though both types use the very same components now (unless you use AMD CPU's) slight differences in the OS' and supporting software/gear are where they diverge. The mac guru's can tell you more about the latest 'G-whatever' and it's strong/weak points. On the PC end for pre-builts I'd have to say that the HPZ800 is the kingpin workstation (seriously rivalling anything apple has to offer too) for under $10k. Here's a review of the Z800 that goes into far more detail than I care to. If you want to know more about how to build a comparable WS, that's another post altogether.

HPZ800 Review

If you're running a serious outfit and can justify the investment, whether mac or pc you'll need a spec'd out rig to run this new software at the level to make it worth the money.

I've decided to bite the bullet and buy Adobe Creative Suite 5 Production Premium. What do you think is the best computer and/or computer configuration for this software? The computer will be largely dedicated to video production work.

Well gang, I couldn't get Premiere to do anything but DV and it wouldn't even recognize my BMD capture card despite my having put the so-called CS5 friendly drivers on it. If they aren't going to let you actually test the bloody thing, don't waste my effin' time. DV only? Honestly. As much as I like some of their products I (censored) hate Adobe. Software cost too much and though I understand wanting to stop piracy, they can't. So quit jerking around those of us who legitimately want to test the software. I'll end up upgrading eventually, but I'm not rushing out the door to buy this stuff. Very, very disappointed. The two best things to come out of this was at least NVIDIA pulled their head out and finally updated their drivers so you can use 3 monitors if you have 2 cards and the joy I'll have uninstalling that waste of time software off my system.

I have always hated that about the Adobe free trials, they handicap the software so much it makes it impossible to actually test it for the features you need. It seems they only do that on the video programs though. The betas for everything else seem fully functional.

Well I opened up AFX and though it was a lot easier to get going than Premeire, again simple mpeg-2 files that CS3 handles with no prob bring about 'file is either damaged or unsupported'. Since they aren't 'damaged' that leaves 'unsupported' as the logical culprit. Very, very disappointed. Not much of a trial I would say when I can't even use the main type of files I use to put the software through it's paces. I'll fool around with it one more time, but if it's the same BS, I'm going to hold off for a while and wait to see what others say about useabiltity and workflow issues. I'll keep you posted....

Thanks for the update. I remember when I tried out a trial version of CS4, I learned that they don't give you the whole package. They keep out certain features (partly to make the download more manageable and partly to get me to buy it, which worked). Maybe it's the same deal here. Please keep us posted on your adventure!

In anticipation of upgrading to Adobe CS5, I downloaded the trial ver's of Premiere and AFX two of the programs I use the most. I have a fast connection and it still took nearly three hours to download the two programs and install them. Okay, I could deal with that.

Next, I went through all of Adobe's new anti-piracy crap and setup the program as a 'trial version' though everything is set for you to just buy it ($600 bucks for one program? Not happening.) Anyway at start up I get a warning that I have to update all of my GPU drivers in order to take advantage of the MPE. No prob. Just about a 15 minute divert over to the NVIDIA site to update my drivers.

Now, of course my GPU's aren't on the list of compatible drivers (why should they be when NVIDIA can get another couple of grand out of me to upgrade?) But, according to the list as of the 1st of May there was some suggestion that they had expanded support for legacy products. By the 2nd, all that info magically disappeared. Whatever, I needed to update the drivers anyway.

So, I go back into premiere and though I don't have GPU support, I at least want to see how the software version of the MPE works. I choose the 'Open Project' option to see how my HDV project load times are supposed to decrease and check some other things. I get a message that 'The project cannot be opened due to the video codec cannot be found'. Hah? Dude I've got codecs up the friggin' ying yang! Whaddaya' mean it can't be found?

Fine. I go into the 'Start New Project' section so I can just load some stuff and go from there. Survey says, XXX (insert angry buzzer sound)! No go. At least now I know why it 'couldn't find the codecs'. The only thing Adobe bothered to load was 'DV' settings! If you want to capture, DV is all you get! Now I dug through the project settings and yeah there's stuff for anything Panasonic has out involving DVC whatever even in the HD flavors. But if you want HDV, AVCHD, XDCAM or anything else, fuggeddaboutit!

Well at the moment, I can't even test the software for what I need to do. Hell, I don't care how well it handles 'effin' DV! I don't need the MPE to do DV work. Well I still have 29 days left to get some answers and hopefully test this thing.

Next, I'll try the AFX and give you a 'blow by blow'. Hopefully that will work out better. So far, I am thoroughly unimpressed.

Well, after getting the trial version fired up I get to the initial project screen and si

Most of the upgrades for the bundles are $599. The Master C is $899. It would be an add-on. I just want to make sure that the upgrade will convert the 32-bit based program to 64-bit. I'm seriously not looking to plunk down $2600 bucks for a whole new copy!

Wow, Adobe's embedded in my work flow like tatoo ink! Phoshop, AFX, Premiere and others help round what I and my team do. I'm torn between Vegas and Premiere though. I think in many respects Vegas is better because of the integration with ACID and Sound Forge. But if the Mercury Playback Engine does what it says it can, Premiere may become my primary editor.

Though I've had CS3 since '08, I'm only just getting around to using fireworks and dreamweaver. So far I haven't found one decent manual on how to use the stuff so it's taking time.

I just watched the Launch promo for CS5 and I'm not blown away, but they've definitely got some 'wow' factors in some of the improvements and tools. Off the top of my head things that grabbed me were:

Mercury Playback Engine (Premiere Pro)

Puppet Pins, Background removal/replacement tools, brush mixing (Photoshop)

Auto Rotoscoping, RAM Preview capable of fully using available RAM (AFX)

Codeless creation and importation of designs from Suite Programs into Flash and Dreamweaver.

Looks like it will be worth the $900 bucks to upgrade from CS3! BTW, you can catch the promo yourselves at adobe.com. Let me know your thoughts on this.

"... 3D glasses above my prescribe glasses for 3 hours was an horrible
experience."

Sarge,

I can believe that. I personally think 3D in it's current form is retarded and not much better than those ancient stereoscopic viewfinders they used back during the turn of the 20th century. The only diff is they move now and make you want to puke faster.

However, to paraphrase an old Star Trek ep, 'in order to get to transistors we first have to figure out how to use stone knives and bearskins.' In order to get to 'true 3D' tech we will have to suffer through this crap that isn't any better than those hokey 3D movies they used to show in the 1950's. Personally, I think it should go away. I mean, have you seen 8k? I saw 6k in '07 and it was phenomenal. I've seen IMAX as well and I'm sure in 3D it is something to behold. But call me when I don't need external hardware to view it.

Despite the mad rush towards 3D, it's still a gimmick. By the time everyone is in a position to make the transition to 3D, there'll be something else jumping up to take it's place and everyone will be scrambling to get onboard just like now. Right now I'm gassed about tech I can actually use like the new rendering engine Adobe's getting ready to put out. The tech has finally gotten to the point where guys like us with some talent, skill and a few resources can turn out stuff that can qualitatively rival much of what Hollywood can offer.

3D is cool and all, but if you're not writing compelling stories that will engage audiences even 'Smellovision' ain't gonna' help.

"don't give them the impression you have the same computing power"

I wish I could have that computer power with me. I will work hard to get me a decent one some day and not only that, a team that can make things happen also (without them is impossible to make things happen) I was impressed, After Effects in real time....wow... that must need a lot of computing power and the textures were made in Photoshop (imagine the hundreds of hours in the making)

I can agree that Avatar had impressive special effects, but I didn't like the movie so much. I saw it in 3D, I wear glasses (I cannot see anything that is too far away without them) and the 3D glasses above my prescribe glasses for 3 hours was an horrible experience. I remember that for some reason tears came out from my eyes a few times (and it wasn't because of the "Smurf" losing their big tree), my eyes felt like burning after like 45 minutes with the 3D glasses on (I took them off several times). What I want to say with this is that you can have insane special effects, made with one of the best software, without ever going out of a studio to record real places (making absolutely all in computer) and recording everything in greenscreen will begin to degrade movies and their essence. Not to mention the hard time actors must had trying to "chromakey" the green in their mind to have some feeling of where they were and what they were doing. For does of you who like acting be advise that in the future acting curriculum will have ACTING 901 (Greenscreen Acting) :)

"I actually didn't have a complete idea of the power of the Adobe
products."

Sarge,

Not much of what you see on TV, theaters or on the 'Net gets made without Adobe software in the pipeline. There are some good companies that make stuff that rivals some of Adobe Products (Sonic Foundry's 'NUKE' and Auto Desk's 'Combustion' pop to mind), but even they usually get used with Photoshop and several other Adobe based programs.

Yeah, I guess it's an idea to let your client's know you use similar software that was used on 'AVATER' (purposely spelled incorrectly). However, don't give them the impression you have the same computing power and resources unless you do. Believe it or not, you have just with your basic setup more computing power and capabilities than George Lucas and Ron Howard did when they made the movie 'Willow'! I was just watching the 'making of video' and at that time the big deals were the blue screen effects and 'Morphing' (which was invented by ILM). Please, if I could roll out the Time Machine and take my main editor back with me, I guarantee my name would be up there with GL's no prob!
