I am becoming a considerable fan of my Panasonic HDC SD-900, due to its great image-quality; but then, my speciality is natural history, so instead of basketball players screaming up-and-down the court, mine is likely to be crabs, creeping over mudflats ahead of an advancing tide. Also, the SD-900 is not one for 'big-hands' in my experience. And just for the benefits of converts, like myself. If ever carrying this camcorder tripod-mounted, 'between-shots', slip a rubber band around the flip-out screen to secure it to the camcorder body, since, somewhat incomprehensibly, this device has no positive lock, and the implications of it getting caught-up in an overhead branch, don't bear thinking-about.

Anyway, you've already made your purchase; so why am I telling-you-this?

Cheers,

Ian Smith - Dunedin, New Zealand.

Lawrence, I too posted here when I first broke out. But yes, a business is really easy to get going. As example, in our state of Tennessee, you can goto the the state site and register, but the state prefers that the business be set up via the county office (in our case where we get our tags for our cars) we pay a yearly fee of $20.00. After that is done it takes about 2-3 days for the state to pick it up then if you need a sales and reuse number the state sends the app. Nothing more to it. And yes renew every year.

Here if you do it via state first they seem to always forget to tell the county.I do agree with EarlC on the school project, consider, schools DEPEND on tax dollars, every dollar is accounted for, they will praise you to get extra help. If you do it at cost and DO NOT give them the rights, but only allow them to use the footage, then you can use it for advertising, but try to NEVER sale or give the rights to your work away. Everything you produce can make you money, even if you do not get paid to produce it. I recently shot an advert for a company that is going to release it into theaters to play before the movie starts. I did the advert just above cost, because I will gain a great deal more with this is released then I ever could if I had lost it because of high fees.

The school project, you may what to consider it a "retain rights" job to use for advertising. But EVERY single person needs to sign a release!!!

Hello all and thanks for the suggestions. My wife has gotten into helping me on my projects and my oldest son will sometimes give me feedback (he is 22). Well we had to go into Cookeville late last night to pick up some red wine, stuff is excellent for kidneys. Anyway We started talking about Baylock Manor. I understand about not posting concepts, I would not have expected it I guess my question came out of my mind wrong. I wanted you to see the place so here are some photos I took..

http://www.times-aarow.com/downloads.html

I got distracted from my thought. Anyway on the way to Cookeville my son and I started tossing around concepts, my oldest son is the most natural actor in front of a camera it is just spooky, but he has never wanted anything to do with acting. Anyway he and I started tossing around ideas and we came up with an excellent concept. A very integrating story line. In fact it involves a subject very close to his heart. So I tossed it out to him to play the lead, his eye brows went up, and he said "HUM" very thoughtfully. So I have two projects to get canned then in the late summer I will engage this one.

OH, I also happened upon a strange partnership. I have another close friend that owns a chopper and airplane. He loves to fly but has a hard time getting someone to go with him. So I am now going to be his flying buddy and he is going to help with aerial shots, at no cost to me. So my summer project will have its first chopper shot. And If you remember back to my first post here about 2 years ago I was a one man show, today I have access to a crew of about 20, all working just for 15 seconds of fame. I was also able to go out and pick up some really nice equipment, so I was really busy for the last few months that I dropped off the site. But I now have three projects planned, and the crew to help and as many as 4 HD 1080 cameras that are at our disposal, one waterproof, suppose to be able to handle short falls, but I have not been apt to test it out.

Lawrence, EarlC is a great source of info and experience about the business of video, along with others that you will see on this form. If you check out his web site you will find a good source of info especially for us new in the business types. From my own experience in starting out in business, in my state I applied to our state govenment for a 'fictitious name'. A small fee was involved and they let me know if the 'fictitious name' I chose was unique. Every five or so years I must renew. I hope this info helps with some your concerns about starting out. Keep shooting.

I, and others likely, will share more but I DO want to point out to you from personal experience, Lawrence, that when school boards get involved in the process to the extent you've noted and the word "SPONSOR" comes up, they're wanting you to invest your time and money in them, not the other way around. And I've NEVER picked up one, single, solitary gig from being in their programs ... paid or not. Never mentioned: "Hey! Saw your wonderful ad in the program. Cool!". Never paid off.

Hello:

I have been volunteering
as videographer for different local events like: Dance festival, school singing performance, singing contest and stage drama.
I have never thought of setting up a studio or register a business name for this
hobby.
However, a recent invitation from a local school, to produce a more professional
looking video for their joint school contest really got me thinking. The school
board officially invited me to produce the video and asked me if I have a
Business name to be published on their event program book. They said they would like to have me as a sponsor for upcoming video productions for their school events.
I really want to make some money from my hobby now.

Is there any easiest or simplest method to register for a video production
company?
Is there anything IÂ have to concern for legal matter?
Do I have to buy separate insurance for different events?

Thank you.

Charles - I have 30 years experience in shooting sporting events everything from game film to player evaluation film with many game films that have been used to put the player into a college program. One of the things I have found is that at many of the basketball games I film it is hard to use a tripod in the stands. The last few years I have been using a mono-pod with much success.

The one thing I tell those who want to film their child's games is that you actually don't really get to watch the game like you think you will. You need to be watching the camera monitor while recording (i use the monitor rather than the eyepiece). You need to be able to anticipate the action of the game. Following a player many times will miss the actual action - you need to become very good at leading the player and anticipating the game. No need for continuous filming unless you like cutting in post production. No need to film timeouts or if the ball gets knocked out of bounds (except for the throw in). Keep the shot wide enough to see the play that is being run but tight enough to see the players numbers - this will come with practice. SO keeping this in mind you want a camera that has a wide-to-zoom rocker that is easy to get to and easy to use. You want to be able to gradually zoom in and out without having the zoom or open to wide be a distraction in your recording.

Something else to consider is depending on the equipment you use, what format you record in battery life becomes an issue. You want to make sure you have a backup charged battery with you. Don't plan on being able to plug in to a power source. Also make sure you have plenty of media to record to, not only enough to cover the game but a few backup media cards. The worse thing that could happen is your card goes belly up and no extra card. I learned this very very early on with tape. I brought two cassettes certainly enough to cover a football game - sure if one of the tapes don't go bad. So make sure you have both backup charged battery and extra media cards with you.

Feel free to drop me a PM if you have questions.

Gregory as composite1 and vid-e-o-man have suggested go to the house and spend time there. Recently, I went up to my farm in North Florida to spend a weekend there. I have been struggling with coming up with a new script idea that centered around my farm (actually for a few years now) but just kept coming up with nothing but a blank. By the end of the weekend I had the script idea down on paper. I sat out in the hay field with my tunes on, cleared my head and started running stories about the farm through my head. I will tell you this, it really works. During the evening I sat by the fire ring with a nice fire going and it just all came to me.

Go spend time at the house, walk around there, relax there, and envision various stories and how the house could play a role in the story. I am a believer - it works. Last year we headed to Seattle to do a shoot - had no idea what we were going to shoot; we were thinking maybe just good B-roll but for sure we were going to do a shoot in Seattle. First day there, we walked the city, hit the Pike Market, the waterfront, the Needle and walked the city streets. By the end of that day we had our story and what to shoot. The next day we went out and shot over 3500 photos and about 6.5 hours of video. It's fun, it should be and remain fun and when it all comes to together man that's the good stuff.

For what it's worth - now you have my two cents.

Gregory, as composite suggested go to the house and soak it in. While you are there get out your camcorder and shoot. Maybe pretend you are shooting a real estate video. This might spark an idea or two. At the very least you will acquire some great b-roll. Maybe put together a video tour to give to the owner which could come in handy, heaven forbid, they might need it for insurance purposes. Keep shooting.

Charles, I haven't any experience with the camera you have chosen but I have heard good things about it. I can give you some info from my experiences shooting my son's basketball games as well as other paying gigs doing same. From my experience, I tried to get to the games early to get a spot as near to center court and at the top level fo the bleachers. Using a tripod (with fluid head if possible but not necessary) will give much better results and save on shooter's fatigue. Set tripod as high as possible to shoot over the crowd. You may have to stand on the top bench seat to see the screen. I tried to shoot from court level but you have to choose one end (offense or defense?) or enlist another camerman. One things that I had to teach myself was to have the camera follow the action and not just my head turning to follow the ball. Start with lens on wide angle and as skill develops you can tighten in on the action. You will probably have to suppress your urge to cheer (or at least inappropriate remarks to the refs). Good luck with your shooting you will probably have a great highlight reel. Keep shooting.

Not going to give you any ideas for obvious reasons. However, when you're looking to create something go to the location and spend some time there. Ideas are cheap. Let your imagination run and see what pops up. Eventually an idea will get in your head and not go away. At that point start writing. See what you come up with. When you get something you like, start the process of turning it into a script. All that will have cost you is your time and creative energy. The script will be the thing that will be the decider for whether you've got something you can move on or not.

True, but.... I've lost jobs because the cost of renting gear and making a profit was higher than if I had the gear. You're right, client's do care about how much the job will cost. I get calls from clients who are hell bent to have their projects shot with RED cameras. That is until I hit them with the rental costs for not just the gear, but all the supporting gear and storage.

If you're paying out more money for rental gear than you're going to get when you don't have the gear, that's a 'cut in your profits'. Now I get your point about clients paying. That works when you have an established outfit and your clients are fully aware and fully capable to pay for what is necessary. When you're starting out and or a small outfit, those clients are rare. Most times you'll be doing your best to not freak them out when they see how much it will cost with a big rental package.

So when you asked 'how would any cost cut deep into your profits?' that's how. Not being able to do a job because renting will drive up the cost of your proposal is a serious 'profit cutter' in my opinion.

What a great camera choice. I am waiting on the delivery of my XA10 to complete my transition from SD to HD.
One of the reasons I chose the XA10 was that it will allow me to continue using my Manfrotto 522CA remote control arm. The 522CA will allow you to do
everything the cameras remote will do but is is part of the Manfrotto arm, which simply replaces your tripods existing arm. The zoom control especially is very smooth.
I have had my 522CA for many years and wouldn't be without it. I think they are still a current model.

The main difference between a Video tripod and a still camera tripod is that a video tripod is usually locked in the horozontal plane and allows panning and vertical movement only,
where as most still camera tripods allow rotation as well which is undesirable. Manfrotto make a good range of fluid heads, some quite reasonably priced, but I wonder wheather you will be able
to follow basketball fast enough with a tripot mounted camera.

Regards Ian

I use a Z5, and I am pretty sure that the date code is embedded into the file so you can turn it on and off in editing software. It wouldn't be editing really, just re-encoding it and you could probably do that on site in a matter of minutes.

I am using the camera all be it more camera than needed for deposition work. You are correct it is better to simply copy of my memory card for a better result. Sometimes the client wants to take a copy with them. Of course with deposition work editing is not wanted.

I was able to remove the rec indicator but lost the date/time stampm at the same time it seems it is all or nothing. I thank you for efforts to help. It would seem though that as powerful as this camera is I could accomplish my goal.

Why do you need it directly to a DVD recorder? Why not record what you
want and then make a DVD from it? Even recording in HD will be the same
bitrate as the DVCAM (SD) will record, just a different format, so
storage is the same. Or record in DVCAM if you really do not need HD.
Recording straight to a DVD recorder will give a poor bitrate if you
wish to do anything with the video later. I would hate to see a Z7 used for 8mb/s straight to DVD format when its potential is much higher.

Actually. . . developing mentor-apprentice relationships is a WONDERFUL idea! On the nursing side, it's call "preceptorship" for the new nurses. I'm one of those "preceptors", I guess. Truth be told, not every well-experienced nurse can act as a preceptor. Not everyone enjoys teaching. It would not be a stretch to speculate that not every professional videographer would want to serve as a mentor. Still, the idea of creating apprentice-mentor relationships in videography (or in ANY field) is wildly wonderful!!

For me, the Ultimate "apprentice/mentor" relationship would be going back to college and taking courses in videography. Unfortunately, there isn't an affordable, near-by college that offers such courses. As it stands presently, I can't afford on-line courses. (I'm actually thinking about getting my Masters in Nursing which is mucho money!!!)

Right now, web-sites like this one offers a certain measure of learning opportunities for a videographer-wanna-be. Actually, I don't even want to be "pro-grade"; I'd be happy with "so-so"! LOL! Still, there's something to be said about having control with the tools of your craft. I'm also a composer (got my BM degree in Film Composition -- 30 years ago! LOL!) and enjoy the tools now available to me to create music (which is my main focus, actually). I don't think I'm all that bad with the camera. But I don't have the control over it like I do with my audio/sequencing set-up (and I ain't perfect with that either).

Appreciate the discussion. . . .

(No worries, Rick. When I was moderating that really busy nursing bulletin board, there were lots and lots of "identical" or "duplicate" questions. Lots of them!! LOL! There's always gonna be a new nurse asking questions (as he or she should do). The same holds true for any other profession, in this case videography.

Now. . . "What the best camera to buy for under $25 dollars?!?!?" LOL! :-D

Hello All;

Sorry I have not posted for some time. Way too much going on, we bought a house and I will get my studio back, and well tons more. But anyway I have a problem some of you may have had. We have a friend that as a family we are very close to. She bought a 130+ year old house here in the south and on her own restored it to what it was then. Man it is way beyond beautiful In fact when you are inside you feel like if you look out the window you will see Confederate Solders on the front lawn. She even furnished it with period furnishings.

Perfect location for a perfect movie, if I had an idea. It is a huge two story with the narrow winding stairs, and the every scary basement.

My sons says make a horror, but I am not a horror man, I am also not one to make it set in the 1860's because I abhor the way people treated people then.

So any other ideas? I hate to see a good set go to the way side/

It is my personal experience that MANY of them (enthusiasts starting out) don't WANT to do that ... apprentice with an experienced videographer, good, low or NO pay. Maybe it's just where I am but most of those with whom I've tried to work have too much "attitude" for me to work with.

I thought most audio mixers had a mic output as well, allowing source in to go to the camcorder mic input at the proper levels. Mine does, but it is a Studiomaster, but my cheap RadioShack mixer also has both mic/line.

This is what I was looking for too as I wanted to record music performances for cheap with good sound quality by providing directly the mixer output to the video recorder, but has been out of luck. I tried using a Cannon HF-R200 camcorder with the audio output from a Behringer 801 mixer and that didn't work, except some kind of humming sound. I could connect the audio output from my macbook and could record music with video. I was searching in google and found this adaptor at Amazon. May be worth a try using with the mixer. Let me know if any of you try this one out.
