Burmese Monk’s Protest Aided by Personal Video Tech

Monk and VideoCamera

We often talk about the democratization of video here in the context of getting your video seen as easily as the big media conglomerates do. However there is a literal democratization of video happening right now in Southeast Asia. Where video technology is taking an active role in trying to overthrow the oppressive military dictatorship in Burma.

Having been to Burma (or Myanmar) on more than a few occasions, it’s not just hyperbole when I say “oppressive military dictatorship.” The army has an iron grip on all aspects of life there, where corruption and atrocities run amok. Perhaps it would be different if at least they were at least competent administrators, but essentially a gang of well armed thugs runs the place. There really is nothing good you can say about the current regime in Rangoon (Yangon). Certainly the people of Burma will say nothing good about them, and what they do say is under their breath. But now they’re starting to say it out loud, in a large part because the world can now actually hear them.

The last mass protest in Burma happened in 1988, and went largely unnoticed by the world at large. Some 3,000 monks and demonstrators were gunned down mercilessly on the streets of Rangoon. But this was before cell-phones, and video cameras, and more importantly, the internet.

There is an interesting article here by AFP explaining how this time, due to technology, perhaps the outcome of this protest will be different.

“The new SANYO Xacti HD700 is our best everyday-use camcorder ever,” said John Lamb, SANYO’s Senior Marketing Manager for the Xacti line. “At 16% smaller and 10% lighter than our popular HD2, the HD700 combines a host of new features in a sleek, affordable and easy-to-use camcorder.”

HIGH-QUALITY VIDEO, EASY WEB USE

The HD700 uses the same new optical processing engine found in the recently announced VPC-HD1000, which is unique in its ability to process images quickly with lower power consumption. In addition to utilizing SANYO’s proprietary H.264 engine, the camera only needs 4.0 watts of power, made possible by combining two engine chips into one miniaturized fast-processing image engine.

Video is recorded in the advanced MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format encoding technology. This advanced compression delivers exceptional video clarity and detail while maintaining the smallest file size possible.

Also, in addition to the reduction in data capacity needed to store the images and video clips, photos or movies are easily copied and loaded on a personal computer or uploaded and shared on the Internet for online use on blogs, video-sharing websites and personal websites.

7.1-MEGAPIXEL STILL IMAGES

The HD700 captures 7.1-megapixel still photos and provides excellent

low-light performance all the way to the ISO 3200 level of sensitivity.

AUTOMATIC “FACE CHASER” FUNCTION FOR STILL PHOTOS

The HD700 includes the new “Face Chaser” function that automatically detects and isolates faces to assist the camera’s exposure and auto-focus. The HD700 is capable of detecting up to 12 independent faces at a time.

5X OPTICAL ZOOM

The HD700 digital media camera features a 5x all-glass optical zoom with a bright maximum aperture of f/3.5. Consisting of nine groups and twelve total lenses (3 aspheric elements, 5 aspheric surfaces), the HD700’s lens provides a fantastic field-of-view with a 38-190 mm range (35 mm equivalent). Combined with the 12x digital zoom, the HD700 provides up to 60x zooming capability.

LARGE 2.7 INCH WIDESCREEN DISPLAY

The Xacti HD700 features a large 2.7 inch Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). The bright, widescreen display flips out from the camera and rotates up to 285 degrees on an axis that allows you to take great video or still images from otherwise-difficult-to-view positions, especially useful when shooting in large crowds or in small rooms.

MAC OS COMPATIBLE

The HD700 is designed to work with Apple’s full complement of video editing applications including the new iMovie 08. Easily edit your movies and add them to your website or YouTube for sharing or create versions for iPod, iPhone or the Apple TV.

And share your movies on DVD, the web, mobile phones, and virtually anywhere else.

CONVENIENT SD/SDHC MEMORY CARD STORAGE

The SANYO Xacti HD700 records high-definition and photos directly to a standard SD or SDHC Memory Card. The camcorder can record up to 2 hour and 46 minutes of 720p high-definition video on a single 8GB card (sold separately).

RANDOM ACCESS

SUNDANCE INSTITUTE LAUNCHES DOCUMENTARY PARTNERSHIP
WITH SKOLL FOUNDATION
$3 Million Initiative Exploring Social Entrepreneurship Expands Sundance Institute’s Commitment
to New Directions in Documentary Los Angeles, CA and Palo Alto, CA – Sundance Institute and the Skoll Foundation announced today a $3 million,
three-year partnership dedicated to exploring film’s role in advancing knowledge about social entrepreneurship.
The grant will support the launch of STORIES OF CHANGE: SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN FOCUS THROUGH
DOCUMENTARY, a new initiative spearheaded by the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program.
STORIES OF CHANGE builds on earlier work between the Skoll Foundation and Sundance Institute in exploring the
potential of combining the art of storytelling with the impact of social entrepreneurship. This partnership will help
create new opportunities for leading social entrepreneurs and outstanding documentary filmmakers to collaborate
and to create new projects that advance the innovative approaches found in both fields.
“The challenges we currently face as a global society demand deep understanding and inspired solutions,” said Cara
Mertes, Director, Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program. “This partnership is based on the belief that
exemplary documentary storytellers and visionary social entrepreneurs have much to share, and more to learn from
each other. We hope both good film projects, as well as creative possibilities in democratic practice which inform
contemporary public thought will emerge through new networks created between the two fields.”
STORIES OF CHANGE is the only multi-year, multi-million dollar grant awarded by the Skoll Foundation that funds
both a new network of professional exchange, and the film projects which result. “Sundance Institute is an
internationally recognized resource for the world’s storytellers, and it has taken the lead in exploring the role of
documentary as an avenue for cultural expression in the 21st century,” said Sally Osberg, President and CEO of the
Skoll Foundation. “The Sundance Institute Documentary Program supports filmmakers who share a passion with
our social entrepreneurs for effecting lasting, transformative social change, and they have a unique capacity to
examine and amplify that passion for a global audience.”
STORIES OF CHANGE has several facets, including a year-round network connecting social entrepreneurs and
filmmakers centered on annual convenings at major events such as the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah
and the Skoll World Forum in Oxford, England. It will provide $1.2 million in film project grants to enable the
seeding, development and creation of new films; expand the audienceship of documentary films concerned with
social entrepreneurship; create an online resource for social entrepreneurs and filmmakers to facilitate individual
and community-level networking, collaboration and exchange of information, knowledge and expertise; and will
present case studies to frame and shape how those working in social entrepreneurship and film/media approach
creative concept development.
Since 1996, the Sundance Documentary Fund has supported more than 400 films in 52 countries. In its next phase,
the Sundance Institute Documentary Program is poised to become a center of gravity for human rights in film,
media and related fields globally, signaling the growing significance of the field.

“Storytelling is central and fundamental to who we are as humans,” said Ken Brecher, Executive Director, Sundance
Institute. “The Skoll partnership will further advance Sundance Institute’s interest in connecting dynamic
storytellers with the transformative thinking of some of the world’s social-change visionaries. Through this, we can
explore the capacity of contemporary-issue filmmaking to imagine new possibilities.

Yet another contest-related post

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Some time ago I teased you all with a reference to TMPG’s MPEG editing tools, as these are the tools we are using to import all of our contest entries into our system. We have had particularly good luck with these tools over the course of the past couple of months, as they provide highly-optimized DVD-compliant output.

First off, a criticism: TMPGEnc 4.3.1.222 Xpress and TSUNAMI-MPEG Media Editor 1.3.2.98 will only show frame addresses as fractional seconds instead of by frame numbers (e.g. if you were at 0h 32m 43s 15f, these programs would report 0:32:43:50 as the clip position.)

Of the entries we’ve accepted thus far, we’ve had only one clip that was sufficiently mutilated that Media Editor didn’t like it. We encoded that one with SUPER instead, which is a free encoder suite that does a reasonably good job and handles a wide array of formats (both incoming and outgoing), but has a highly-annoying download process that forces you to read many screens before you can pull down the file.

TMPGEnc 4 Xpress also appears to be quite adept at performing video standards coversion. We converted a QuickTime H.264 720p entry to widescreen DVD format with no issues at all (and got gorgeous output), and a conversion from PAL to NTSC went quite smoothly as well. It takes some time on our old machine, though; if you need to do your encoding in a hurry, you want something faster than our conversion machine (which uses an Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz with 400MHz FSB.)

For the days when we get multiple entries, both programs make our lives easier by including batch rendering capabilities. You set up your videos for encoding and add them to the batch for processing, then when you’ve got everything ready, hit the render button and walk away. Your files land where you want, and you’re ready to drag those files into your DVD authoring software of choice.

If the free conversion tools on the Internet don’t do it for you, we wouldn’t have a problem recommending these affordable and high-performance tools from TMPG. (Though you will enjoy them even more if you have a more-recent computer.)

Just when you thought Premiere Elements couldn’t get any better, along comes the 4th version with many improvements and a sleek looking interface.
