We’ve taken the Sanyo HD1 Xacti out quite a bit. Our impression overall has been good. HD video isn’t its forte, but we know you’re interested. Here’s a simple 720p grab, at half resolution.

I was just doing a rough cut of Vidcast episode 9… but by the time I realized that the CRT monitor I was using was set to a 60Hz refresh rate (instead of the 85Hz that I usually use when I have to use a CRT), I already had a splitting headache. But my pain is your gain: both episodes 8 and 9 should go up tomorrow night, if we’re fortunate.

Now to find a sponsor for a pallet of LCD monitors… :)

Apple releases Universal Final Cut Studio

DV and HDV rendering from the Timeline is up to twice as fast on a MacBook Pro with 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo than a 15-inch PowerBook G4 with 1.67GHz PowerPC. MPEG-2 encoding from DV and HDV for DVD authoring is up to 2.5X as fast on a MacBook Pro with 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo than a 15-inch PowerBook G4 with 1.67GHz PowerPC.

    Editorial Assistant Andrew Burke and I were down in San Francisco shooting a documentary on comic book artist Andy Ristaino of Slave Labor Comics this last weekend. We shot 24p on the Panasonic DVX100a using a Bogen 503 head tripod and a LitePanel LED light. The shoot went well. We will tell you where you can see the finished project when we have completed editing it.

    They ain’t cheap but I deem this light a “must have.” Made our already heavy H1 (well, its not ours but you know what I mean) even more heavy but this light does the trick and it can be used in so many different ways. I am truly impressed. These LitePanels use camera batteries and are cool to the touch as they are LED. I’m saving the $635 or so for one of these. Keep an eye out for a review in the mag.
