Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Reprinted from an HP press release:

Fueling the emerging connected entertainment industry, HP today introduced a broad lineup of products, services and relationships that make it easier than ever for consumers to adopt a high-definition, digital lifestyle.

Unveiled at the opening of CES 2008, the world’s largest annual tradeshow for consumer technology, the new lineup includes dazzling entertainment PCs, an expanded portfolio of HP MediaSmart connected entertainment products, digital content services such as Upline, which allows people to store and share digital content over any Internet connection, and a range of partners involved in the creation and distribution of digital content.

“HP has made a focused effort around breakthrough solutions in digital entertainment, high-tech design and home computing technologies - and it has made us the world’s leading consumer technology company,” said Todd Bradley, executive vice president, Personal Systems Group, HP. “We’re continuing that momentum today with an expanded portfolio of stylish, easy-to-use digital technologies that will help to make the hi-def lifestyle a reality for more people every day.”

Stylish, easy-to-use products

One of the standout products in HP’s updated portfolio of consumer PCs is the HP Pavilion tx2000 Series Entertainment Notebook PC.

The tx2000 offers an unmatched touch and pen experience with a new, resistive touch-screen technology and built-in digitizer that recognizes the rechargeable pen as it nears the screen and disables the touch feature to ensure easy transition between touch and handwriting.

Featuring a sleek, high-gloss “Echo” Imprint finish, this elegantly designed convertible notebook also comes with HP QuickPlay software, which provides access to a variety of entertainment options at the touch of a button. Using the HP Webcam, integrated microphone and instant messaging solution of their choice, people can engage in live video chat with friends and family across the world.(1) The new HP Pavilion tx2000 is available today starting at an estimated U.S. street price of $1,299.(2)

An impressive combination of size, performance and value, the HP Pavilion Slimline s3300 offers a dual-format Blu-ray and HD-DVD player,(3) plus a TV tuner(4) and NVIDIA GeForce 8500 card with HDMI port. The setup equips families and students with the functionality of a conventional tower PC in a desktop that’s one-third the size - and it lists under $1,000.(2)

Buoyed by its tremendous success in PCs in 2007, HP is now making every TV it sells a connected HP MediaSmart TV, which feature advanced technology to allow consumers to stream movies,(5) music and photos from any networked PC in the home to a high-definition(6) LCD TV. In addition, with the new HP MediaSmart Receiver, the company is extending the same networking capability to any of the hundreds of thousands of HDTVs already in consumers’ homes.

The HP MediaSmart Receiver features a piano-black finish as well as HP’s exclusive “Zen” Imprint pattern and ambient blue lighting, making it a stylish addition to any room in the home. The receiver enables seamless aggregation of digital content from multiple PCs around the home so users can access and enjoy their favorite photos, music and movies on any HDTV.

The latest HP MediaSmart LCD HDTVs now feature Media Center Extender technology, new panels for dynamic blacks and enhanced image quality, and aesthetic updates such as a streamlined industrial design and a back-lighted remote control for an enhanced entertainment experience that allows people to enjoy all their digital content on a stunning HDTV.

HP also is making a variety of enhancements to its MediaSmart Server, including the addition of integrated server-side anti-virus software from McAfee(7) for added security as well as remote access and the availability of Photo Webshare and iTunes on the HP Media Vault for more robust and secure experiences.

New digital content services

HP makes online trip planning and sharing a snap with the new HP iPAQ Navigate website - www.ipaq.com/navigate. The site helps customers research points of interest and create tailored travel plans that then can be printed for easy reference or loaded onto the new HP iPAQ 300 Series Travel Companion for dynamic trip management.

The site allows users to share their travel plans with family, friends and colleagues online. Travelers also can edit itineraries directly on their device and instantly share new updates when logging back online or even add notes about their travels into their trip plan so others can use the information to create and customize their own trips.(8,9)

Expected to be available in March, the new HP Upline online service at www.upline.com allows customers to readily access, share, manipulate and store digital content over any Internet connection.(1) Friends and family near and far can access shared digital files in just a few simple steps.

The new service is a result of HP’s recent acquisition of Opelin, a small, privately held San Jose, Calif., company that provides secure, scalable online services including storage, backup and data migration. The new online service complements HP’s existing hardware storage offerings by providing consumers and SMB customers the security of knowing their digital world is protected in a secure, offsite location in case their local PC gets lost, damaged or destroyed.

More information on HP’s new CES product and services lineup is available in an online press kit at www.hp.com/go/CES2008.

New relationships drive innovation in design and marketing

HP also is for the first time displaying its new Artist Edition notebook at CES. Available later this spring, the limited-edition Artist Edition HP Pavilion notebook features the “Asian Odyssey” personal design of 20-year-old Joao Oliveira of Porto, Portugal, the winner of the “Take Action. Make Art.” global notebook-design competition.

Also on display are the “extreme makeover” notebooks created as part of the HP and PC Magazine “The Computerlicious Design Experience.” These one-of-a-kind, fully functional works of art designed by rap superstar Nelly’s Apple Bottoms clothing line, handbag designer Rebecca Minkoff and renowned street muralist James de la Vega, among others, will be auctioned off on eBay to benefit tech non-profit the National Cristina Foundation.

During CES, the notebooks will be on display in HP’s booth and at PC Magazine’s 25th anniversary celebration at Tabú. View all the designs online and find out more about the charity auction at www.pcmag.com/computerlicious.

Many of them have already posted their videos to the Web using the Beta version.”

After experiencing how easy and how much fun video editing and sharing can be with VideoSpin, users who want even more capabilities can click on the Get More shortcut button at the top of the VideoSpin screen. This will open a special browser window with a catalog page of available upgrades, including additional codecs, transitions and Pinnacle Studio consumer video editing software.

Samsung Announces Flash-based 1080P HD Camcorder at CES 2008

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Reprinted from a Samsung press release:

Samsung Electronics, a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, continues to improve its camcorder offerings with the addition of the SC-HMX20C Progressive HD Flash-based Camcorder. Featuring Full HD and a1080p mode with 30 frames-per-second recording capability, the SC-HMX20C’s flash-based design makes this camcorder compact and easy-to-use. With an included docking station, users will find it simple to not only charge the SC-HMX20C, but utilize the HDMI input and component connectivity to easily view home movies directly on an HDTV. Furthermore, users are able to connect the SC-HMX20C to their laptop or PC via a USB connection and share their home movies with family and friends quickly and easily. For added value and convenience, this multifunctional HD camcorder also delivers among the best still camera functionality within a camcorder on the market–up to 8 megapixels size through pixel-rising technology. Samsung’s camcorder lineup will be on display at Booth #11033 during the International Consumer Electronics Show, which will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, January 7 through 10.

“The SC-HMX20C offers consumers the ability to record their precious memories in full 1920×1080p HD quality. Because this camcorder records onto flash memory, it offers quick start-up, great battery life and one of the smallest bodies in the industry,” said Reid Sullivan, vice president of Digital Audio & Video Marketing at Samsung Electronics America. “The SC-HMX20C is extremely versatile and can be used to shoot HD video footage in virtually any situation. Everyone from aspiring filmmakers to parents shooting their children’s first birthday can capture their memories in beautiful HD quality.”

The SC-HMX20C’s outstanding performance is the result of cutting-edge design coupled with innovative technologies in HD recording. The SC-HMX20C features a 6.4-megapixel CMOS with electronic image stabilization so even action-packed scenes come through with clarity. Featuring an HDMI-CEC (Anynet+) high-quality connection to HDTVs and other devices, consumers can easily control the camcorder through their Samsung HDTV remote while viewing movies–just one more feature that strives to make life easier.

With the unique feature of high speed capture and super slow motion playback, the SC-HMX20C allows consumers to record fast motion at 300 frames per second for up to 10 seconds and then drastically slow down the playback of the recording. Perfect for sports fanatics looking to tape and analyze their golf-swing in slow motion, or anyone interested in getting the detail of fast-flying events that otherwise would be undetectable to the human eye, this special function opens up a new world to users.

Samsung also engineered its new HD camcorder to be significantly more powerful than previous models. The 8GB of built-in flash memory helps ensure that nothing is lost for lack of space and users also have the option of recording onto high-capacity SDHC/MMC+ cards via the additional card slot.

In addition to ample memory and superb recording capabilities, the SC-HMX20C also delivers among the best still pictures of any camcorder on the market. The SC-HMX20C has a few unique features traditionally found on digital still cameras such as a pop-up strobe flash, automatic built-in lens cap and advanced face detection to automatically bring facial features into crisp focus, delivering high-quality images.

At only 10.9 ounces, the SC-HMX20C fits easily into the palm for quick-and-easy shooting. For further convenience, the SC-HMX20C comes equipped with features that make it simple to use. Samsung’s proprietary swivel hand-grip makes it possible to record from multiple angles, including regular and low-angle shots, while the 2.7-inch wide-aspect touchscreen LCD makes editing on the fly easy. Additionally, the iCheck function lets the user know how much memory and battery life remains to ensure not a second is lost.

Finally, Samsung has designed the SC-HMX20C to be both stylish and ergonomically correct. Its design utilizes trends seen in the fashion and car industries, resulting in a camcorder that’s as elegant as it is practical.

The SC-HMX20 will be available in May 2008.

The new models offer a variety of recording formats to appeal to every consumer lifestyle. Of the nine new models being introduced, three models record to Flash Memory, three record to MiniDV tape, and three to DVD.

The new Canon camcorder lineup includes: the FS11 Dual Flash Memory camcorder, FS10 Dual Flash Memory camcorder, FS100 Flash Memory camcorder, ZR950 MiniDV camcorder, ZR930 MiniDV camcorder, ZR900 MiniDV camcorder, DC330* DVD camcorder, DC320* DVD camcorder and the DC310* DVD camcorder. Also being introduced is the DW-100 DVD Burner.** Canon’s core expertise in optics and imaging is represented in each model, offering the best image quality and providing consumers a varied and wide selection, resulting in a complete and rewarding camcorder experience.

“We truly believe we have taken camcorders to another level of performance, especially with the use of Dual Flash Memory and Advanced Zoom - two breakthrough technologies. The technology features add up to a more enriching consumer experience,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A.

Leading Technology

Dual Flash Memory - Taking Video to the Next Level

Canon’s breakthrough use of Dual Flash Memory - the ability to record to an internal Flash drive as well as a removable SDHC memory card - allows consumers to experience a new level of performance, style and flexibility. Dual Flash Memory allows consumers to record video to the camcorder’s internal Flash drive even if they do not have a memory card. When the internal Flash drive becomes full, footage can be easily transferred to an SDHC memory card and when it comes time to view their video, the card is simply placed into a memory card reader in a computer or HDTV for instant viewing. Furthermore, having an SDHC memory card slot allows for expandability, since greater capacity can be added in the future by purchasing additional cards.

Flash Memory boasts a number of advantages and end-user benefits for maximum convenience and flexibility. Since Flash Memory is a solid-state memory format and has no moving parts, the camcorder can be smaller, more compact and lighter than ever before, allowing it to be carried anywhere. Additionally, Flash Memory is a highly stable method of storage, and as a result, accidental jolts to the camcorder are less likely to result in failure or data loss. Consumers will also enjoy the camcorder’s low power consumption, which leads to longer battery time. Compared with other types of storage, Flash Memory camcorders are able to read and write data faster, so users can start recording faster and have immediate access to their recorded scenes.

Advanced Zoom - Closing The Distance On Top Image Quality

The new camcorders all feature a new Canon technology known as Advanced Zoom which enhances the zoom capability of each model to a powerful 48x, while maintaining stunning image quality. Canon’s exclusive Advanced Zoom system combines Genuine Canon Optics with Canon’s proprietary DIGIC DV Image Processor to achieve expanded wide angle and telephoto zoom, while retaining superb optical quality throughout the entire zoom range.

New Product Lineup

Canon FS11, FS10 and FS100 Flash Memory Camcorders

The FS11 Dual Flash Memory camcorder offers a 16GB internal Flash drive, for up to 10 hours of video recording, plus adds the flexibility of an SDHC memory card slot. The FS10 Dual Flash Memory camcorder offers an 8GB internal Flash drive, for up to five hours of recording capacity, and also features an SDHC card slot. The FS100 Flash Memory camcorder has an SDHC card slot only, and comes in three stylish colors - silver, navy blue and wine red. All three camcorders share Genuine Canon 48x Advanced Zoom along with a 1.07 Megapixel CCD Image Sensor, and Canon’s DIGIC DV II Image Processor for exceptional color and clarity. An Intelligent Lithium-ion Battery displays the remaining recording time to the minute, and a microphone terminal provides added audio flexibility. Weighing only 9.2 ounces, these ultra-sleek camcorders are just as stunning as the images they capture.

The Canon FS11 Dual Flash Memory, FS10 Dual Flash Memory and FS100 Flash Memory camcorders are scheduled to be available in April, at the estimated retail prices of $599, $499 and $399, respectively.***

SANYO, a world leading digital camera manufacturer, debuts the Xacti HD700, a pocket-sized, 720p high-definition digital camcorder. The HD700 is a high-performance camcorder capable of recording both high-definition video and 7.1-megapixel photos easily to an SD or SDHC memory card (memory card sold separately). Featuring an ultra-compact, ergonomic shape, the HD700 is specifically designed for publishing high quality video and high resolution still photos in formats ideally suited for Web-use or sharing. Fun and easy to use anytime inspiration strikes, the HD700 is truly an advanced communication tool for the emerging information age.

The SANYO Xacti HD700 is now available in the U.S.A. in Silver, Red and Brown. It has an MSRP of $599.99*1.

“The new SANYO Xacti HD700 is our best everyday-use camcorder ever” said Tom Van Voy, Vice President of SANYO’s Audio Video Division. “At 16% smaller and 10% lighter than our popular HD2, the HD700 combines a host of new features in a sleek, affordable and easy-to-use camcorder.”

HIGH-QUALITY VIDEO, EASY WEB USE
The HD700 uses the same new optical processing engine found in the recently announced VPC-HD1000, which is unique in its ability to process images quickly with lower power consumption. In addition to utilizing SANYO’s proprietary H.264 engine, the camera only needs 4.0 watts of power, made possible by combining two engine chips into one miniaturized fast-processing image engine.

Video is recorded in the advanced MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format encoding technology. This advanced compression delivers exceptional video clarity and detail while maintaining the smallest file size possible.

Also, in addition to the reduction in data capacity needed to store the images and video clips, photos or movies are easily copied and loaded on a personal computer or uploaded and shared on the Internet for online use on blogs, video-sharing websites and personal websites.

7.1-MEGAPIXEL STILL IMAGES
The HD700 captures 7.1-megapixel still photos and provides excellent low-light performance all the way to the ISO 3200 level of sensitivity.

AUTOMATIC “FACE CHASER” FUNCTION FOR STILL PHOTOS
The HD700 includes the new “Face Chaser” function that automatically detects and isolates faces to assist the camera’s exposure and auto-focus. The HD700 is capable of detecting up to 12 independent faces at a time.

5X OPTICAL ZOOM
The HD700 digital media camera features a 5x all-glass optical zoom with a bright maximum aperture of f/3.5. Consisting of nine groups and twelve total lenses (3 aspheric elements, 5 aspheric surfaces), the HD700’s lens provides a fantastic field-of-view with a 38-190 mm range (35 mm equivalent). Combined with the 12x digital zoom, the HD700 provides up to 60x zooming capability.

LARGE 2.7 INCH WIDESCREEN DISPLAY
The Xacti HD700 features a large 2.7 inch Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). The bright, widescreen display flips out from the camera and rotates up to 285 degrees on an axis that allows you to take great video or still images from otherwise-difficult-to-view positions, especially useful when shooting in large crowds or in small rooms.

  • Sanyo Introduces Compact 1920×1080 Camcorder

    Monday, January 7th, 2008

Reprinted from a Sanyo press release:

SANYO, a world leading digital camera manufacturer, introduces the Xacti HD1000, the world’s smallest and lightest full HD digital camcorder*1. The sleek and simple-to-use device records video in Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) and also takes 4-megapixel digital still images. The HD1000 utilizes the advanced MPEG-4 AVC/H.246 video format and features a 10x optical HD lens and a large 2.7-inch widescreen display.

The SANYO Xacti HD1000 is available now and has an MSRP of $799.99*2.

“The SANYO Xacti line has gained a reputation for excellence and innovation,” said Tom Van Voy, Vice President of SANYO’s Audio Video Division. “The new Xacti HD1000 continues our pioneering approach by combining full 1080i HD video recorded in the advanced AVC/H.264 standard with a massive 2.7-inch widescreen display and a simple hardware and software interface for file saving and TV playback.”

    SMALLEST, LIGHTEST, FULL HD CAMCORDER
The new SANYO Xacti HD1000 weighs only 9.5 ounces and has a total volume of only 16.6 cubic inches, making it the world’s smallest and lightest Full HD recording (1920 horizontal and 1080 vertical pixels) digital camcorder*1. It incorporates advanced MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video compression, enabling up to approximately 85 minutes of Full HD (1920 x 1080) video recording or up to five hours, 14 minutes of TV-quality (640 x 480) video recording onto an 8GB SDHC Memory Card (memory card sold separately).

SANYO developed a new high-speed image processing engine to handle the high capacity demands of Full HD data. This engine utilizes SANYO’s proprietary codec, enabling Full HD compatibility with the AVC/H.264 format, and makes it possible to do with one simple yet powerful chip the complex processing which previously required two separate chips. The required high compression ratio is gracefully achieved due to optimization of the image process algorithm actuator, while consuming a mere 4.2 watts of power.

    NEW ERGONOMIC DESIGN
Designed for easy, one-handed operation with all key conveniently functions thumb-operable, the HD1000 is comfortable to hold, even for extended periods. The device is the first to incorporate ergonomic results based on collaborative research between SANYO and Japan’s Chiba University in regard to optimizing the lens-to-grip angle to minimize strain on the muscle groups used while holding and recording. Testing focused on muscle responses in six places on the arm, as well as surveys asking for individual assessments and evaluations. As a result of these tests and responses, it was discovered that a lens-to-grip angle of 105°, the angle subsequently used on the HD1000, was optimal.

As part of its stylish and thoughtful new design, the HD1000 also adds a distinctly useful feature frequently requested by users of previous Xacti camcorders – the ability to have the lens level with the ground when the device is used with a tripod.

    FULL 1080i HD SENSOR
Incorporating the latest high-definition CMOS sensor, the SANYO Xacti HD1000 camcorder captures full 1080i high-definition video (1920×1080) at 60 frames-per-second. Designed to record the rich and vibrant colors of real life, the HD1000 also captures the subtle tones to provide a natural-looking result. The HD1000’s CMOS sensor provides the quick responsiveness needed to capture fast moving subjects and SANYO’s noise reduction technology helps obtain the cleanest signal from each pixel.

NEW “XACTI LIBRARY” FUNCTION FOR EASY FILE SAVING AND PLAYBACK*3
The large data size of Full HD movies, along with demanding file saving and playback processing usually requires special hardware and/or burning video to a disc. The HD1000’s new “Xacti Library” feature makes it exceptionally easy to save video and image files by simply connecting the included USB cable*4 from the docking station to an external hard disk drive*5 (hard drive not included). After connecting the docking station to an external hard drive and to a television (via an HDMI cable), the user places the camera into the docking station and – using the menu that appears on the television screen – can search through the thumbnails and choose either to play the file or save it to the external hard disk.

    10X OPTICAL HD LENS
At the front of the HD1000 is a commanding 10x all-glass HD lens. The HD1000’s fast f/1.8-2.5 lens is capable of allowing almost four times more light through to assist in lower light venues. Consisting of eight groups and eleven total lenses with a built-in neutral density filter, the HD1000’s lens provides a spectacular field-of-view with a 38-380 mm range (35 mm equivalent). Combined with the 10x digital zoom, the HD1000 provides up to 100x total zooming capability.

    LARGE 2.7 INCH WIDESCREEN DISPLAY
The HD1000 features a large 2.7 inch widescreen Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). The display flips out from the camera and rotates up to 285 degrees on axis, allowing you to take great video or still images even from difficult-to-view positions, which is especially useful when shooting in large crowds or in small rooms.

    FOUR MEGAPIXEL DIGITAL IMAGES
The Xacti HD1000 enables simultaneous shooting of 4-megapixel still images and HD movie clips, with a simple press of the shutter button during the recording of a video clip. Users need never miss another precious photo opportunity. (Depending on the mode used to take still images, simultaneous video clip shooting may be interrupted. While shooting video clips, using the digital image stabilizer may change the angle of view for still images.)

    HDMI HIGH-DEFINITION OUTPUT
It’s easy to view and share high-definition video on your HD television with the HD1000. Using the HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) terminal built into the base station, just one cable connects your camcorder to your TV for a totally digital output. HDMI carries both the video and audio signals in digital form for the highest quality playback.

RECORDS TO CONVENIENT SD/SDHC MEMORY CARD
The SANYO Xacti HD1000 records high-definition and photos directly to a standard SD or SDHC Memory Card. In fact, the HD1000 is capable of recording up to 85 minutes of 1080i high-definition video on a single 8GB card (sold separately). The SD Memory Card’s compact size and weight makes it ideal for the diminutive HD1000. The minimal power requirements of the SD card also contribute to longer recording and playback times. When connected to the computer via the USB cable, the HD1000 acts as a standard card reader. Transferring images and videos to your computer has never been easier.

    IMAGE STABILIZATION
High-definition can’t hide shaky or erratic camera movement. That’s why SANYO’s HD1000 comes with a sophisticated image stabilizer for both stills and video. This handy feature operates in both wide-angle and telephoto modes, giving every shot a solid, professional-looking feel. For video-compatible anti-shake correction, SANYO further developed the digital stabilizer based on previous proprietary image stabilizer technology, and advanced the technology to be more accurate in its correction, increasing the image area detection function. Also, SANYO newly developed its proprietary “Superposition function” for higher still image quality. This function allows for clear pictures of the subject even when moving or rotation occurs.

AUTOMATIC “FACE CHASER” FUNCTION FOR STILL IMAGES
The HD1000 includes a new “Face Chaser” function that automatically detects and isolates faces to assist the camera’s exposure and auto-focus. The HD1000 is capable of detecting up to 12 independent faces at a time.

    MANUAL CONTROLS
The HD1000 features versatile manual controls for advanced shooting. The following settings can be manually adjusted according to the shooting situation: Manual focus adjustment (16 settings); aperture adjustment (6 stops); exposure compensation (1.8 EV, 0.3 EV steps); shutter speed (13 settings); and image-quality adjustment (for sharpness and color saturation).

    ADDITIONAL HD1000 FEATURES:

  • Random Access: Each video is recorded as an individual MPEG-4 and each still as a JPEG so you can have true random access allowing you to review a specific image or video quickly and easily, without waiting for tape rewinding or fast forwarding.
  • Easy Camera to PC Connection: One of the more frustrating aspects of working with any digital media camera is juggling all the wires and connections necessary when you want to use it with external components for viewing or to download files. SANYO’s HD1000 streamlines the whole process with an innovative docking station that provides an instant HDMI, component, composite or S-video connection to a TV and a USB connection for a PC. The HD1000 even recharges its internal battery when nested in the docking station.
  • Super fast Startup: With its tapeless design, the HD1000 eliminates the need to queue up a tape deck or get a DVD or hard drive spinning, allowing the HD1000 to begin shooting in as little as two seconds! When the HD1000 is powered on, closing the LCD display puts the HD1000 in standby mode. Simply open the display and the HD1000 automatically powers up and can begin immediately recording in as little as two seconds.

    Monday, January 7th, 2008

Reprinted from a Sony press release:

Sony is debuting four hard drive Handycam® camcorders with sleek bodies and robust capacities to capture life’s longer moments.

Generally, most of the models are more compact than last year’s models. The 60GB DCR-SR220 and DCR-SR85 camcorders deliver continuous recording times (LP mode) of up to 41 hours, while the 40GB DCR-SR65 and 30GB DCR-SR45 models provide up to 27 and 20 hours, respectively.

“Our new hard drive models incorporate intelligent and fun-to-use functions that will make people feel more confident in their moviemaking abilities” said Kelly Davis, director of camcorder marketing at Sony Electronics.

The SR220 model features 15x Carl Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar® T* optics, 4-megapixel digital still capture, and a 2.3-megapixel ClearVid™ CMOS sensor. Like most top-of-the-line camcorders in Sony’s 2008 line, this model includes imaging technologies shared with the company’s digital camera business to improve picture quality and performance.

This high-end model integrates face detection technology for both video and photos. It can identify up to eight faces in the camcorder’s LCD frame, and automatically adjust focus, exposure and color control for natural-looking skin tones. Photos get an added boost with the application of flash control.

Its ClearVid CMOS sensor with Exmor™ technology features dual noise reduction to keep picture noise at a minimum. This optimized sensor, combined with the Bionz™ signal processing engine, produces vivid, natural-looking video and photos. Dynamic range optimization is also included to counter the unfavorable effects of high-contrast shooting such as loss of picture detail in harsh lights and deep shadows.

    New Hybrid Movie Recording

Hybrid movie recording on an optional Memory Stick™ PRO Duo™ media card as well as hard drive is available on all camcorders to extend their recording options. Almost 11 hours of video (LP mode) can be stored on Sony’s new 16GB media card. Both movies and photos can be transferred from the hard drive to the media card in the camcorder without having to use a PC.

    Exceptional Audio Performance

All of the new models incorporate a new built-in zoom microphone that zooms in on subjects for clearer sound recordings. The SR220 model records audio in Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel surround sound, while the other models capture Dolby Digital 2-channel audio.

    Sophisticated Ease

The SR85 and SR65 models have 1-megapixel CCD imagers for first-rate video and 1-megapixel photos, along with 25x Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® zoom lenses for image clarity and optimal color resolution. The SR45 unit features a newly-developed 1/8-inch, 680K-pixel CCD imager with a high pixel count in order to produce widescreen (16:9) video, and a potent Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 40x optical zoom lens to zoom onto distant subjects with minimal loss of picture quality.

All models integrate Sony’s HDD Smart Protection system, which combines physical shock absorbers, G-sensor™ shock protection and video stream buffering to safeguard against data loss.

For greater ease of use, all hard drive models incorporate a new quick-on feature that takes the camcorders out of standby mode in about one second; 2.7-inch, (16:9) wide LCD touch panel screens for easy framing and viewing of footage; film roll index to view several seconds of video within a thumbnail file; face index to quickly search for scenes by face; and search by voice, color and face using the bundled Picture Motion Browser™ software.

Archive and Share Movies with Ease

DVD creation is simple with Sony’s one touch DVD burn feature with smart controls. When camcorders are connected to compatible PCs or Handycam stations (supplied on select models) via USB, they will automatically synchronize newest content and burn that footage to DVD with the supplied Picture Motion Browser software.

These models also work with the Sony’s VRD-MC5 DVDirect recorder, which now supports video transfer from Memory Stick media cards.

The SR220 camcorder will ship in March for about $850. The SR85, SR65 and SR45 units will ship in February for about $700, $600 and $500, respectively.

All will be available with a full line of accessory options. They can be purchased online at sonystyle.com, at Sony Style® retail stores (www.sonystyle.com/retail), at military base exchanges, and at authorized dealers nationwide. Pre-orders begin on Jan. 7 at www.sonystyle.com.
