Store It: Storage Buyer's Guide (page 3)
Internal refers to any component that is housed inside your computer. There is really only one major component that fits into this category: a hard drive.
There are two main reasons why you would consider adding another hard drive inside your computer. The first is obvious, and that is to increase the storage available. This is a great solution for those who have movies or other projects they want to work on but their main-drive storage space is scarce. The second reason to add an extra hard drive is to get a better and faster hard drive.
Newer drives offer you more speed and bigger space. Adding extra drives can also help with data redundancy and backup.
Depending on the size of your computer’s tower, you may not have enough room to fit in another hard drive. A great idea, if you have the space, is to purchase another hard drive for data storage only. For example, your main drive would contain your operating system and all the programs you use. The second drive would be used only for storage; you access what you need when you need it. This solution allows you to maximize the space on your system drive and increase its performance.
Pros: A second hard drive will expand your internal storage space. Prices for internal hard drives are cheaper than their external counterparts. You can dedicate a new drive to data only for increased performance.
Cons: Requires opening up your computer to install. You must have free space in the computer for the hard drive. There is potential for over-heating your computer.
What to look for: Size and speed - the bigger these two numbers, the better the drive will perform. Something that operates quietly is also nice, but this is secondary to performance.
This article has looked at the most popular options that you can use to store your data. Whether you choose an internal or external storage device, knowing the benefits and weaknesses of various options is important. The best solution for your data will come down to your personal preference. Weighing the options and costs of the various options will also help to make your decision easier.
