Tripods in a Supporting Role (page 3)
Don't put an old tripod out to pasture. Use it as a light stand for guerilla clip-on shop lights and other accessories. Also, use it when traveling or when a high-end tripod is just too heavy. In addition, you can use a lighter, second tripod to lock down a second camera, but be sure to lock it down good when unattended. You don't want the camera to fall off!
There are few differences between video and photo tripods, but the main difference is in the head. Since there is no movement in still photography, a fluid head is not a necessity. In still photography, a swivel tilt head will achieve the simple vertical and horizontal positioning that you need. In addition, still cameras are generally not as heavy as professional video cameras, so the tripod can be lightweight as well. This makes still photography tripods much easier to lug around.
